Associate Professor Bryan Dewsbury of Florida International University gave the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute’s annual Elizabeth Davis lecture. He argues that higher education classrooms can offer students and society at large more than just access to knowledge and subject matter. To do so, he says, we have to learn, lean into and make explicit the practices that make the classes a formative space for social civic participation. In the lecture, A/Prof Dewsbury used an introductory biology class to demonstrate how these formative goals can be achieved while pursuing intellectual excellence.
