This Photographer RUINED His Footage | How to Communicate with Photographers
What do you do when the videographer or photographer keeps stepping in front of you during a wedding? How can you avoid it in the first place?
I chatted with Brandon from Everwhere Films to discuss a very interesting interaction he recently had with a photographer. Check out his original video here: pDBZmmVzv0WH/

The Perfect Audio Gear for Wedding Filmmakers
She's also spraying and praying ! id hate to
I worked with Brandon and his wife two years ago on a wedding while working as a photographer. It was only my second time working with a videographer, but we basically speak the same language. It's so easy to quickly pre-plan, take visual cues from across the room, and adjust during the work. Even having the bare minimum awareness can get you through it. It was also the first time I had shot with steady lights, which was different from my norm since I usually shoot only available light with primes, but I ended up taking advantage of them with my shots. It was a complete breeze. I can name her technique, though. We all know it. It's Uncle Bob. Big gear, doesn't seem to know how to use it. Her positioning and equipment selection is so far removed from what I would ever do. I'm having a hard time imagining what kind of shots she was going for. Close up, 24-70 at mid length within six feet with a flash nearly on camera. That's basically a cell phone shot. I gotta believe they got a full album of cell phone shots. She has no ability to be aware of anything else in the room. She won't catch any spacial context. My goal is to be unseen for the whole wedding. I would feel awful if I ruined one shot, let alone nearly all of them.
Yes! Love when the photo and video team just click.
YESSSS DUDE! Love this
Thanks man!!
Out of the 99% of easy to work with and collaborative photographers... Brandon had to get stuck with the 1% for this wedding. That sucks, bro! I was audibly saying "No freakin' way..." seeing her get into some of those shots. Insanity.
I think my jaw literally fell open when I first saw Brandon’s footage.
I do a lot of event working with videographer's, to me this photographer either had no Idea what she was doing and was simply following the videographer's lead and then jumping in and over shooting to get the shot at all cost's or was clueless as to what was going on around her, when ever I have to work with a videographer Iv'e never worked with before I always try to have a conversation before the event starts as to what the couple/organizers want, what I need and what the videographer wants, what the time constants are and how were all going to manage that, there's just no excuse for this BS when good money is being paid for still's and video to be delivered.
It makes me so happy to hear that part of your process is to take a second and make a game plan. Love that!
@@JoshBirman It's literally a 5 min conversation that can make the next 6-12 hours go easier for both party's, there's enough stress sometimes thing's going wrong without fighting each other all day..
@daveboyle5751 1,000% agree
I would've said "b-tch get out of my way already!"
There's so many thoughts I have right now. On one hand, I want to blame an amateur videographer for tainting this photographers perspective of ALL future videographers and how she now views each one of us as enemy #1. On the other hand, and more probable hand - she's selfish, believes her art trumps all even the couples video dreams, she has zero awareness, professionalism, and empathy for anyone but herself. Because come on...Brandon's more fun than Bubble Wrap, he's your favorite character in every rom com, he's the one you root for, If you can't get along with the man who single handedly saved the table butter shot from total damnation I mean you don't deserve to share a wedding with anyone ever again. And I've never even met the man in person but Ill tell you this - it would be a honor to butter his bread. Great conversation and video you guys! These convos need to happen more often. That photographer needs to make a video from her perspective because I would LOVEEEE to hear what the hell she was thinking lol
You're far too kind Jaired. I'm printing off a portion of this comment and hanging on my office wall. And we will hang out in person soon enough.👊🏼 I'll make sure that happens.
Oh my gosh! It would be so awesome to hear her side of things!
For comparison, how long does it take for the Shinobi to turn on?
Review on Godox GM6s Touch Screen DSLR Camera Field Monitor, thanks
Someone also rated this one high Fotopro Carbon Fiber Tripod 60 Inch 360 Degree Ball Head Quick Release Plate Lightweight Camera Tripod for Travel Tripod Folded Height Only 14.2" - Can you compare these 2?
The portkeys pt6 isn't that bad in sunlight if you use the included sun cover.
Nice channel man, great quality, keep it up !
Thanks man!!
You are so wrong on this monitor the view angle is just fine, i've had mine for years
Definately would go for the Freewell "Real travel tripod". 870 gr incl Video head.
I had DJI Ronin SC...it was a piece of crap...I bought the Zhiyun Weebill 3E...it is a fantastic gimbal...took me 2 minutes to balance and get going..
Glad you had such a good experience with the Weebill 3E!
Hows the stability during long exposure shots?
I’m not actually sure. That’s not really something I do in my work. Sorry 😕
I have the thinktank urban access 15 and love it. It's slightly smaller. Access to the gear is through the back. I have taken it on a few international flights with no problem. The tripod pocket only worked for me for a couple of years; now i keep it in the front pouch, and i can secure it with the tripod straps at the top. I haven't tried to remove the waist belt, but it's only held in place by really strong velcro ; i believe its detachable. Thanks for the wonderfully detailed review!
I own the Nomatic 35L, One of my all time favorite camera bags, but have you tried the Peak Design Travel 45L? I have traveled all over the world with it (No Joke) and it fits SO MUCH GEAR while still being International Airline compliant.
I have not used that one. But that sounds awesome! I was always turned away by the fact that you have to buy camera cubes in addition to the backpack.
@@JoshBirman that a great point, I would counter arguement that the only one you really need is the medium or large camera cube which would bring the price up from 300 to 400 to keep it in line with the ones you just covered. I would think it as it gives you the flexibility to build it with just the parts you need.
That’s a good point. I’ve just always disliked camera cubes because of the bag space you lose from the extra padding of the cube. But that’s definitely personal preference 😄 If I ever get the chance I’ll definitely check out the Peak Design.
Thanks for the review! Also coming from a couple of Manfrotto monopods over the years and looking forward to using something new! I'd also love it if there was a single lever/button release for all sections in a monopod some day!
Hey Josh, great video! Any thoughts on the new Atomos Shinobi II? It has a 30% thinner design and 50% brighter HDR screen. I'm considering purchasing one for my Sony FX30.
Thanks man! I haven’t looked into a ton but Chris Brockhurt recently put out a really great video about it.
Shinobi 2??
Checked Amazon, they say it accepts arca Swiss though. Anybody could confirm please?
The plate it comes with is Arca Swiss compatible, but it only accepts that one plate. So other Arca Swiss plates that are longer won’t fit.
@@JoshBirman got it! Thanks for the quick reply! 🙏👍
Hi! This vs the Ulanzif f38 Coman please? 😁🙏
Top pack is for hikers. Which is the big demographics for this bag.
I just bought this.. they make a panning plate that clicks in for just a little more, which I added during purchase. I’m sure you can buy it separately
How does it click in?
@@JoshBirman It is the peak design style plate on the bottom but it has a round plate attached with a twist screw that lets you pan a full 360. Look on their website and click on option LT32 + Leveling Base. You will see it at the top right on the last product photo
@@JoshBirmanThey misclassified it. Should say swivel base not leveling but it’s only $10 more to add
Just to add about the missing pan function - this creates another problem. If you set your ball head to portrait mode this means you are stuck at single straight position and will not be able to tilt your camera up or down. I just took this tripod on a hiking trip and lack of this pan function really limited my workflow when shooting something in portrait mode. I was really disappointed.
sameeeeeee! i was so shocked to see something like that was missing from this
⚡️⚡️⚡️
Shinobi to warm
Problem with filling it up is you need a crane to lift it :D
No kidding! 😂
I have a Sony camera, and I don’t want my Shinobi monitor to charge the camera’s battery. However, I do want to keep the camera control feature enabled. Is there a way to disable the charging function while keeping camera control, or is disconnecting the camera control cable the only solution?
I don’t have the Shinobi II, only the first gen model. So I’m not sure.
Finally someone telling the truth thanks for reviewing
Thanks for watching!
So frickin cool
Does this require a very specific type of battery. I live in Korea and there are a bunch of similar batteries to the one listed in your description.
Just requires an NP-F style battery.
Soon as you said, Sony promises updates… you lost me 😂 I was at this same crossroad.
Most pros that I know have either moved away from Peak Design or are considering it.
These style of tripods are definitely nowhere near as secure and sturdy as a large Manfrotto tripod. But you get so much portability in exchange. I haven’t used it yet, but the new Ulanzi TreeRoot looks like it could be the best tripod in this style.
Who is that cute girl
That shirt looks great on you!
You flirt 😘
I was supposed to make a video about this light...but after seeing this video, I don't think I should make content ever again lol So good as always Josh!
Oh my gosh! You’re so sweet!! 🥰 You should definitely make a video about this light. I would love to hear your opinion on it.
These aren't wedding lighting questions but how loud is the fan? If you were to use it in your talking head video, would it be too loud? and lastly, what light are you using in this video to light you?
The fan isn’t very quiet. I didn’t do any testing or anything, but I never noticed it. I think it’d be totally fine for a talking head. Lights I used for this video: My key was an Aputure 300X with a Light Dome. The lights in the background were Aputure 60X x2, Aputure 120D II, Aputure F7, and Godox SL60.
I use 2 x100 for weddigg N s to with 212 v mounts they last all day I love it
That’s awesome!!
@@JoshBirman i recently bought 2 ls 60x for spots, so im mostly going to use all 4 lights, i just need v mount batteries, they are expensive for no reason
i got the x100 and the g60, both Zhiyun and i got a couple of battery grips from ZGcine, check em out if you can... ZG-H90 Pro, they are killer combo! Greetings from Mexico! Saludos Amigo!
I’ll have to check out those ZGCine grips!
Love mine! I made a video testing it against the Aputure too, but I need to post it lol. V-mount is awesome! I've been using a 100W power bank similar setup to the v-mount, but a little slimmer. The light has been great, and I'm currently in the process of trying to create some barn doors to attach to the fresnel for it.
Oh interesting! Let me know how those barn doors turn out.
The quality of your content is top notch man! Great work!
Thank you so much!! 🥰
Dude why didn’t we talk about this? I’ve been working on a replacement for at least one of my 60x’s. I bought a v-mount adapter for my amaran 60x and the cord stick up way up in the air awkwardly. 😖
You mentioned those Hollyland headsets and all other gear left my brain 😄
First!! 🎉
😂
Lack of Arca-Swiss compatibility is a deal breaker for me. TBH, I was never really impressed with the Peak Design tripod to begin with. Currently looking for a decent travel tripod, but unfortunately this one won't do it for me.
Smallrig just released some sick versions similar to this that are quicker to setup and arca-swiss compatible. I think it's the AP-100, check it out
Falcam f38 pro. Cheaper and better than the PD. Only thing the PD has over it is it's slightly smaller and lighter. But the Falcam is better in every other way. Works with almost any arca-swiss plate, the PD plates, and obviously the f38 plates. 😂
@@OldishGoalie I went with the Ulanzi Zero Y...fully Arca-Swiss right out of the box. Needed something lightweight for times when travel isn't photography-specific.
I have been comparing this tripod with the Ulanzi Zero F38. That head is compatible with peak design plates, but works with longer arca swiss plates as well
@@Ken-Hung I like everything about the F38 except that I prefer having the plate actually lock in rather than tightening it with a thumb screw. I use Peak Design plates and Peak Design Slide Straps on all my cameras so it should work well.
