Yet another video game channel, but this one is really good, I swear.
Bioware's DRAGON AGE: What Went Wrong?
With Dragon Age: The Veilguard approaching soon, I took a look at Bioware's rich history, and found a couple of striking similarities to the older games in the franchise. But not in the way you'd expect...

Is WASTELAND 3 the FALLOUT sequel we never got?

While Fallout might be the bigger name, it all started with Wasteland. The two are linked forever, but I wanted to see just how similar they really are... Love this video my friend
"The Wartable was fine" no it was not. The game should not make you wait 14 irl hours to progress. Inquisition was garbage on release almost entirely because of that
24:54 2010's Consoles making the first downgrade to PC games. 56:30 2020's Woke bigotry the worst downgrade to all games. By the way, 56:40 how bad aged the conclusion of this video just 1 month later. I have a question: didn't you saw all the signs? (And by 'signs' I mean 'explicit telling how woke it will be in your face'). xD
The game got an 84% on Metacritic. Despite the nonsensical "woke" stuff and mediocre writing here and there, I'm having a blast. Review up soon :)
@@LockPlays Metacritic? So... you really think they didn't pay most reviews? When most of them had the same exact phrase _"return to form"._ Oh boy... Someone who loves this saga so much, really doesn't care who wrote it? It could had been me, better than one of those activists resented towards people like us (gamers) and the world in general. As the saying goes: _"if you want to know someone, give them power"._ We gave them all the power, and we got to know them.
@@vamremMX After playing it myself for about 12 hours, I don't believe there's some giant conspiracy surrounding this game no. Just like the game itself, most of those reviews just contain bad writing and a "return to form" is a typical sentence that was also used plenty of times for the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 reviews, but nobody seems to care about that. As for the game itself: the writing is not great and the overly progressiveness of it makes it laughable in places, but I judge a game on the total package and that's just one part of it. So far, I'm loving the combat, the art style, the exploration, the main story, the soundtrack, and the main character's voice acting. We'll see how that evolves over the next 30 hours or so, but one thing I won't do, is listen to TH-camrs, Redditors or people on Twitter telling me what to think. If anything, this game has taught me that both "sides" are completely nuts and deserve each other. Give it a chance for yourself, and see how you think about it, maybe it has some redeeming qualities you like too?
@@LockPlays It has notes of 9s and 10s my friend... Not even the most woke person can believe this game worth that high. And you say you should play it to prove if you will be punished with all of this: - Combat for phone games. - Meaningless dialogues. - Colorful Fortnite universe. - Character editor to do whatever you want, except something pretty. - Pure cringe scenes. - Linear. - A level of indoctrination so shameless that breaks the fourth wall. Tell me you don't care that your game has all that, and I'll believe you. If that, I will even prefer to believe you prefer such politics in our games, instead you don't care.
@@vamremMX Don't you think its exhausting to have this constant nonsense "war" about every single game, movie or tv-show that comes out lately? The Acolyte was atrocious, this is not The Acolyte. The game has plenty of redeeming qualities, but gets bogged down by bad writing. It's as simple as that. There's no agenda, there's no war, there's no indoctrination, there's no resistance, it's all so stupid and most of all: pointless. If the game is good, it'll sell well, and if not, it won't. Most normal people don't care or even know about any of these online Twitter/Reddit/TH-cam spats. We saw the same thing, but in reverse, when Hogwarts Legacy released. Nobody cared back then either, and now that the shoe is on the other foot, they won't either. Personally, I think that's a good thing, because all I care about is if I'm enjoying a game or not. All the rest, is a trivial waste of time. I hope you come around at some point and give the game a try for yourself, so you can make up your own mind. You're smart enough to have a conversation about it, so you're also smart enough to form your own opinion.
watching this after the actual launch makes me sad.
Even with its obvious problems caused by lack of time, DA2 is my favorite of that series. I find the combat fine. The reuse of locations is absolutely criminal. But the characters, man. The character writing and voice acting keep me coming back to 2 again and again. Absolutely top tier. On the level of mass effect 2's companions, even though there are fewer of them.
Wasteland 2 isn't quite up to the scale of 3 but it should definitely not be slept on. It doesn't have quite the production that Wasteland 3 has but the overall mechanics are similar enough and it makes playing through 3 more fun when you run into quite a few characters from the second game. It makes them a lot more personal when you actually know who they are and where they came from.
They hired diversity to make adversity and commit atrocity
I LOVED THE DRUG ADDICT THING XD
The Boogie clips are *chefs kiss*
0/10 for this woke abomintion. And that's also the amount of money they will see from me. Zero
Good history video. Sadly veilgaurd is going to flop and likely be the worst in franchise. RIP BIOWARE
What went wrong? EA. Corporate Greed
This video makes me hate EA above all else. How the mighty have fallen, what a shame.
I'm flabbergasted by your conclusion. You admit that the team that made Dragon Age great is no longer there, they rehired one narrative consultant. David Gaider has been attacking fans on twitter for ideological differences(but we all know he's bitter about Dragon Age 2). Most of the promos have been about the garbage art direction and representation...in a fantasy setting. And while I've played every Bioware game since Baldur's Gate 2 and know they are largely politically neutral. That was the old team, and frankly I don't trust the new team to stand against EA's scummy corporate tendencies...
There's no doubt there will be a large portion of "real life" inserts into the game, which I'm definitely also not a fan of, but to me it depends on how they wrap up the entire series. If the ending is satisfying, the new characters interesting, and the gameplay engaging, I can (hopefully) look through the nonsense and judge the game based on what it does right. At this point, I doubt it'll get a fair shot, so I'm expecting a lot of 7's and endless videos highlighting why wokeness killed the videogamestar, but I hope it's more than that.
The gin score is like this, 0 >>> 10 > 5 > >>>>>>>>>>>>> 7. 7 is a score that they know the game should be 0 by heart, but they want to lie to players.
Dammit, you're making me wanna replay dragon age origins but if you have seen the most recent stuff for veilguard, it doesnt look great.. I REALLY want a great bioware game again and this hurts but this just doesnt appear to be a return to greatness.
Hawke works in the way that Sheppard works in mass effect. Sure its not your own character but it is "your" version of hawk. Though I much prefer making my own character, race and class.
In DA2 I heard Carter kind of sucked as a character. Bethany is a better companion. I usually play rogue anyways.
The dev team went from a bunch of nerds who loved fantasy games to women and freaks. Sad to see it
24:55 That's not unique, that's just the Warp from Warhammer Fantasy & 40k
Which is in turn the Realms of Chaos from Michael Moorcock's Multiverse/Eternal Champion series.
Hire again the entire team that made Dragon age 1 and remake Dragon age 2,3,4. Franchise saved!
I loved Dragon Age Origins and feel it was one of the best RPGs ever made. I was disappointed by Dragon Age 2 but still saw it as above average and somewhat enjoyable even with the negative changes from the first game. Dragon Age Inquisition had good points but all in all it was a slog to get through, finishing it was an act of determination rather than joy. I doubt I'll bother with Dragon Age The Veilguard based on what I've seen and read, down the road if I hear different I may reconsider but I have so little faith in "modern" game devs I doubt it would be worth my time.
Amazing video. But if Taash really has a dialogue with Rook where she says she’s non-binary, I’m sorry, but DA4 already has no soul. Dragon Age games always inserted diversity and inclusion with intelligence, creativity and coherence. To use a modern subject in a fantasy game only to appeal to the LGBTQ+ community and farm pink money on them is atrocious. And yes, I spoke with queer people about this and even them think this is very a stupid thing. I was hyped at first but now I have no hope at all for this game. I pray that I’m wrong but everything so far tells me I’m right
I'm starting to fear you're right as well. Everything I'm hearing is not so great so this video didn't age very well haha. I'll still play it and review it though.
@@LockPlays I’m new to this channel! I’d love to watch your review (and gameplay as well, since I don’t have a PC or console, only a Mac nowadays, so it will take a while for me to play it myself)
unfortunately i dont believe in them. i have 0 expectations for this new dragon age. im not excited for it and i have absolutely no hype for it at all. however as im big dragon age fan and have been around since the launch of origins i will still try it but i can already see its not going to be a good game.
Veilguard is very obviously going to be a mediocre to bad game with terrible writing and characters. These devs have no respect for the actual DA fans and they do not deserve either our respect or our money.
thank god you said DA2 was great, i thought so too and just wanted more of what they did but better in the next game
Yeah
The thing I like the most about Dragon Age 2 that gets underappreciated a lot is the friendship/rivalry system with companions. Unlike all the Bioware games before and after it, in DA2, you can have two different relationships with the characters and they will change reflecting that relationship. It was much more nuanced and narratively interesting than a good/evil morality bar could ever be.
Pardon my ignorance but i just started playing DA2 (so try not to spoil) but isn't the friendship rival mechanic just carried over from DAO? Or is it deeper than that?
@@tomk8350 The mechanics use the same words but work a bit differently. In Origins, a companion with maximum rivalry will hate your guts and will want to leave the party permanently, so you want to avoid that in general. In 2, rivalry still allows the companion to stay even if they disagree with your methods. You still unlock special abilities for them and you can still romance them. It's just going to be different abilities and a different romance. For certain companions, I found the rivalry path to be much more to my liking.
@@LungDrago companions leaving you in origins was overall better as it really made your decisions more impactful. In 2 its so hard for companions to hate you unless you do the negative route in their questline. The fact Varric will never hate you is ridiculous im both 2 and 3
@@PuppetMaster-Blade Well, I can't agree with that. To me, there's nothing impactful about a decision I'm not ever going to make. Why would I make a decision to see less of the game, if I like the game? Unless I would hate the companion's guts I guess, but I have no such hard feelings for anyone either in Origins or 2. And even if I did, it's still more interesting to me if I can change their ways rather than have them kicked off my party.
@@LungDrago Having characters leave automatically gives the player multiple ways to play the game and gives each encounter more depth.. i remember my first playthrough of origins in 09 and both Sten and Z left my party due to the choices i made in dialog and storylines.. way better than them calling me a meanyhead but still staying. My later playthroughs i found ways to keep them in.. ultimately Sten still tried to kill me but he gain my respect after. That will never happen in Da3 or 4 as characters are always supposed to love you..minus Cassandra, shes the easiest one to get to hate you
I have been a big fan of Dragon Age, Mass Effect, the Old Republic, and BioWare for a long time. I didn’t know the full sad story of their downfall. But I waited so long for this and they are spitting on the grave of those before them.
what went wrong? veilguard with its fugly character creator and its dumb pronouns...i hope the industry crashes and from its ashes smarter devs rise that have balls of steel and say no to woke ideology and political pandering
For me personally, the beginning of the end for Bioware was when they sold out to EA in 2007, and subsequently the ME3 ending in 2012. Then Andromeda unceremoniously flopped in 2017. And later when they gutted the SWTOR development staff to work on Anthem's release in 2019 (which was an indefensible, abysmal failure), that's when I knew they had crossed the event horizon. Yes, DA:I was ok, but even if DA:V is a success, Bioware will never regain its former glory, and they will precariously remain one (more) failure away from joining Visceral, Westwood, and Mythic in the singularity of dead studios.
but i loved inquisition
I love the three DA games we've had so far. I'm into it for the stories, characters and sense of a living world. But much of what we have seen so far for The Veilguard has me worried, mostly the unnecessary inserting of "wokeness" and "modern day sensibilities" of a particular cultural set, less to add to the fictional world, but more to pander to "their tribe" and "own the chuds." Make matters worse, people who work or used to work for Bioware have been publically attacking the fanbase for criticism. When has that EVER worked?
The Veilgaurd looks like another Andromeda to me. Adromeda was not Mass Effect and The Veilguard is not Dragon Age. Maybe the gameplay is fun but it looks like its made for a zoomer audience as apposed to the people who loved the series growing up. I am sure it will look great on Tiktok with its fortnight graphics and neon particle effects spraying all over. Baulders Gate 3 was both massively successful and proof that the old audience that enjoys a deep story that develops slowly over time is still here.
ims still waiting for a DAO sequel with my warden
you will be very disappointed
In my opinion it wasn’t da2 console gameplay or complete lack of da:o soul and spirit in sequels that killed dragon age. It was the books. Don’t get me wrong, inquisition is a mess: choices from the other games are almost irrelevant (and they are irrelevant for the ending, basically just few cameos), looks pretty - plays like ass, not to mention they tried to use fucking browser-games mechanic (real-time waiting for wartable quests) to make main quest longer (and it’s very short in comparison to da:o) and I can go on and on. But when they decided that making certain events 'canon' is a good idea for Dragon Age - it was over. It's the feeling that whatever you did, whoever you've killed or saved (or just skipped) - nothing really mattered, cos in a new book or game crucial parts of story and characters' lives are gonna be rewritten and made canon or non-canon at devs will. And no hope remains. Someone may say: “hey Witcher is a great series and it has book material and choices from witcher1 got zero effect on witcher3” - well, yes. But Witcher books were out there long before the game, and you don’t get a new Geralt every time. Not to mention, witcher3 aesthetically and visually feels pretty much close to both previous games. And it’s a very rare example, when the game is actually getting better from game 1 to 3. And dragon age got none of it.
It was great, then it died of EAIDS.
Ngl i actually prefer the console port of origins as its just easier to play and requires less needlesss fiddling. The problem is that they started stripping the narrative complexity alongside the controls when it came time for the sequel
No it's the third installment of a that is way way way way way way way way way way way better than Fallout.
Hey the graveyard called, it wants you to crawl back inside the hole you crawled out and never resurface again.
Every game had a different dev team... thats pretty much it
The game's not even out yet, the fuck you mean "what went wrong!?"
Kind of obvious what went wrong. PC master race developers surrendered to console exclusivity deals. QED
people who hate videogames and videogame culture gained complete creative control of the series from DA2 onwards
I'd recommend PrivateSessions video on Mass Effect 2, while the gameplay WAS better the game itself lost so much of what made Mass Effect great as deep & engaging writing was traded for flashiness, so while it wasn't as bad as DA2 I'd say that was where EA started with its ruination of BioWare.
Hey, another enjoyer of PS. His ME2 and 3 videos are some of the best on the series. His Mass Effect 1 video isn't half bad either
What i believe in are my trusty honest game reviewers, not bought diplomatic reviewing companies. Choosing politics, pronouns, is a bad start for Dragon Age 4, i also hope it is not their final roar
If they had kept on the path of DA origins we would have world peace. Now we live in a reality of war and destruction because bioware sucks now.
Wokeness and illness of the mental kind
The boogie clips are killing me jajajaaja
I had to stop watching when you called DA2 "amazing". I will not subscribe, sorry mate. Best of luck to your channel.
