A true spade bit is built that way for balance. The horse learns to carry the bit balanced in their mouth. When the horse is learning to carry the bit, the trainer will "hang" the horse for a couple hours every day...meaning that the horse will be tied, well above the head. The horse is usually started in a bosal and moved gradually into the spade, sometimes both at the same time. The bit is used for collection, not direction. Every other cue given to the horse comes from the position of the rider's body, not the bit. The bit is only used for collection. If you watch, the rider's hand seldom moves. It usually sits directly above the saddle horn. Those spade bit horses, if correctly trained, are very in-tune with the rider's body position and leg cues.

I used to haul horses professionally for a company out of Lexington, KY (blue and white trucks, if you been to the racetrack in Lexington you probably know who I mean). The horses I was used to were Quarter horses, Arabians and stock horse crosses. I scared the crap out of coworkers and clients with how confidently and quickly I handled the Appendix horses and thoroughbreds. In my defense, the horses were never scared or out of control. The clients and coworkers just weren’t used to people who knew what they were doing. The racing scene is full of poor horsemen.
