First few weeks in an old vacant property in Ireland
มุมมอง 20K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
A video diary of our first few weeks in our new home in Ireland. The house hasn't been lived in for over 30 years. When we moved in we had no electricity, a rudimentary water supply and no heating. Buy us a coffee: buymeacoffee.com/piningformartens Follow on Instagram: pining_for_martens
You are doing brilliant with the irish, i say every year im going to learn and never do! So so impressed!
Well done!
Wow, long time no see! Nice to have you back!
Thank you, things got in the way the last couple of weeks so it was a bit difficult to make the time to put a video out. We'll try not to leave such a gap before the next one 😊
@PiningForMartens i love hearing your Gaelic, and your shower is wonderful. So are the solar panels. Keep up the good work on all fronts! ❤️
I can't tell if you're saying it all right, but it's very pleasant on my English ears to hear it! You're making good progress, the house will appreciate your efforts I'm sure! Collette is getting some pretty good skills there, tell her to make a couple of saw horses to save her poor back and knees though! It'll make everything so much easier for her if you get everything up and off the floor when making things. Keep up the great work, it's looking good! 🏚️ < > 🏠✨
Thank you. A few mispronounciations on the unfamiliar words I think, I don't converse in Irish a lot. Aiming to buy some better tools soon, but I think Colette might be building a work bench soon the rate she's going 😄
You're doing so well with the Irish language and the woodworking 👍 skills you have em' 😎
Thank you, Colette is on a roll with the tools now 😊
You’re making magnificent progress in Irish! You have my full admiration! Great work Colette from another Colette!
Thanks Colette! We have been watching your videos for years and they inspired us to come to live over in Ireland. We love what you have done with your land and hope that one day soon we can transform this place into a woodland for nature 😊
Is foghlaimeoir mé freisin. Thosaigh mé ag foghlaim an teanga ar lein cúpla bliain ó shin, agus mé ag iarraidh teach a cheannach in Éirinn. Is maith liom a bheith ag léamh agus ag scríobh as Gaeilge, ach tá sé deacair labhairt agus tuiscint. Tá tú in ann labhairt go han-mhaith. Comhghairdeas leat!
GRMA - Tuigim níos fearr ná mar a labhraím freisin. Scríobh mé na habairtí don fhíseán seo. Níl sé éasca dom ach ceacht maith a bhí ann.
How much land do you own?
How are you guys? Still alive🤔
We are! :D
Welcome to Ireland 🇮🇪. And it might seem daunting at times but keep the long term plan in your heads and it will work...best of luck 🤞
Thank you!
Do you not think that you are far too old for blue hair?
Ever heard of putty?
There's barely enough wood in the frames for that! :D
You sound very unhappy to me
We were on that day. I thought it when I watched the video back, I'm surprised more people didn't pick up on that 😊
You can get a secondary glazing kit it's a sort of cling film you stick over your windows with double sided tape then use a hair dryer to get the film taught, makes ahuge difference. insulating your ceilig space above with kingspan type sheet beteewn the rafters is the best by far though,
We'll do something like that with the ceiling... bubble wrap on the windows is stopping the condensation for now 😊
So so interesting to watch. It looks an absolutely massive challenge and the hardships are obvious. But I imagine as things get done there must be a lot of satisfaction in that. Looking forward to seeing your progress. I thought my renovation was a big one but yours will be such a reward as you get there. Lovely to have all the land aswell. Becky
Thanks, we'll keep going! 😊
This title had me thinking you was actually living in an abandoned house but after looking further you have purchased it and are renovating it..
yup, it's probably too good for us to label it derelict too - just not lived in for a long time 😊
I would love to live like that.
We have our bad days... it's important to remember the reasons why we took this on though, nature's rewards are there to see each day.
It will be beautiful again someday😊
Thank you 😊
Get a mosquito net for the bed, or drape smthg across it to keep those buggers out of your bed ! Phew ! God bless yall ! ❤ 🙏🏻
Fantastic video guys really glad i found your channel looking forward to watching the rest of your videos
Thank you for watching 😊
well done every step counts
Thank you
With all due respect looks like a complete Palace when you look at some of the properties dodgy landlords are trying to let
That's true, people live in worse places than this and they're renting.
This is brilliant. It's tough, but you're doing what every second person who lives in a crowded town, noisy terraced house, or shitty apartment, wants to do. Godspeed to you both, and welcome to Ireland. I hope you're treated well. No need to mention Horace because he's just found his heaven.
Thank you! Yeah it's the peace and quiet that brought us here 😊
If you have a lot of rock and know how to mix cement.try making a Rocket stove.
We'd love to do that, I think it will be a deisel heater short term 😊
Not sure if your in Ireland or not but if you are my advice would be to mingle....you'd be pleasantly surprised as who would help you out here and there.......love your dog..
We are in Ireland and you're right - we've met a few really helpful people out this way 😊
Me and my husband did exactly the same. In our first weeks we had no hot water then no water at all temporarily. We showered at our workplace. Once a week we treated ourselves to the local travel lodge and had a bath. We put in new electrics and at one point had no electricity. We used a barbeque to cook outside
Thank you - sounds like you had a bumpier landing than us! Fair play to you for taking on a project 😊
Woodlice are repelled by peppermint scents and cinnamon and oregano scents.
We have tried the scents. Now the place has dried out it's much better.
I honour what you are doing in preserving nature ❤
Thank you, it's what motivated us to come here 😊
I have just discovered your channel and very much look forward to seeing how things progress. The very best of luck with everything. I'm a keen birdwatcher and lover of the land also who lives over the border from you in the north of Ireland on the co down coast
Thank you. I'd love to record the birds more here. It's been great watching the cycle of species this year. The swallows are gone and now we're seeing long-tailed and coal tits 😊
How much land do you have?
10 acres 😊
Wow,that's good
I dont know if you have woodland trust in Ireland, but you can get free trees
We have Free Trees Ireland and have applied for some trees for this autumn 😊
It has a chimney so surely you can have an open fire
The fireplace isn't in good condition as the back boiler was ripped out. We're not keen on burning in the house. A few options, but will probably make a video on heating soon 😊
Really happy for you I enjoyed watching your video this morning. All the best of Luck! You're doing something alot of us would like to do. It seems to make sense considering the world we're in today. And yes maybe a pity about not doing it a decade ago, only because your materials would have been cheaper. Am guessing that's part of the struggle too. Anyway, all the very best and good luck
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Others have said it but there are grants available for derelict houses here in Ireland that you may be able to avail of. Good luck :)
Thank you, we looked into the vacant property grant but decided not to for various reasons. We're considering the foresting grant at the mo, but all these grants seem to come with a catch 😊
1945s prefab
A neighbour thinks it was a 1950s build 😊
@PiningForMartens it might be......how can I argue about 5yrs.......you can tell it was because before the war nothing like that was built,1930s is when council housing estates began to pop up and they stopped when ww2 was on and began again 2 weeks after peace was declared in 1945 the goverment made it personal to house every soilder and their families, council houses were being built at an average cost of a £1000 ,between 1940 and 1960 they had had built just under 2million homes across britain
It’s not yours. The brass neck of you

Fantastic video, good luck with the project. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you 😊
I used to use a watering can as a shower, one kettle per fill works great. Although I now enjoy home comforts but still remember those days and thankful for what I have
We've just upgraded to a real shower now. Bliss! Before that it was 1 kettle for a shower, 2 kettles to wash and condition my hair 😊
Deeks like Ireland where I half from Put on that hoodie keep warm use your body heat
Oodies and jumpers 😊
Nothing wrong with that house u can make it absolutely gorgeous if u have the right mindset and money 💯👍
Thank you 😊
Are yous claiming the house as your own and making it habitable? I've always wanted correct information on doing so
We sold our place in the UK and bought this one outright. Our way of going mortgage free, no savings left now but saving each month for repairs, etc 😊
Just buy an old caravan for £500 live in that.
Wouldn't a caravan that price be colder to live in? I've heard a few horror stories of people getting cheap caravans that hot very damp and mouldy in winter 😬
Hi guys someone may have already suggested but a cheap touring caravan would make life easier to live out of until you get a bit more done on the house
We did consider that option, but we'd need space to accommodate the pets. To be comfortable during the winter would mean getting a good quality caravan, money we think would best be kept for the house 😊👍
All the best folks! 😘😘
Thank you 😊
So your squating then?
Nope, this was our way of living mortgage free 😊
The problem is living like this will have long term affects on your physical health. Whatever makes you happy but be in no doubt your are absolutely shortening your life.
This is very temporary living situation! 😊 we won't be living like this forever
As a previous poster said: make 1 room spic and span, so it's nice (and warm) to retreat to after a day's work. Maybe have a look into 'diesel heaters' as a temporary solution to heat up a room. They are amazing and cheap! A wood/coal stove could be perfect for your house. Maybe look for a second hand one? To get a shower going: look for one of those camping shower units that work with a gaz bottle. I've been using one of them for years already. One 10 liter gaz bottle lasts me for 18 months. (I live alone). To make meals: get a normal, old stove that used to work with gaz. Connect the same kind of gaz bottle as is used for the camping shower and you can cook like a queen (or king)!! For the windows: I used plexi-glass to put in front of the glass windows. You can go as fancy as you want with the finish. You can make a wooden frame with plexi that fits in front of the old window. They also prevent the windows from getting wet with condensation. Good luck! You live in a gorgeous place!
Thanks, we'll definitely look into the plexiglass + a few heating options. Autumn has been mild and the house isn't too cold at the mo. We could have the shower situation sorted imminently 😊
way back, we lived in a house in Sweden that had not been lived in for decades, no mains water (it was from a well), no electricity , no plumbing of any sort, the toilet was a shed at the end of the garden... showered in another shed, cooked on a wood burning stove... It was the best time we had, a lot of fun....
Sounds a whole lot tougher than our place 😬 in most ways it's not too bad here - we've moved everything into the house now, finally cooking our meals indoors
Improvising in the difficult times will make you appreciate when you are fully sorted all the more..best wishes.
thank you 😊
@@PiningForMartens Speaking as a person who brought a derelict victorian solicitors office and returned it to its former domestic use...all outside walls a dodgy roof, damp , fallen down ceilings and having sash broken windows whilst it snowed ...I will never forget how good it feels to be mortgage free and cosy now..xxx
