WINCHESTER WEEK-END! Model 88 and Model 94 lever action fun guns!!
Took a couple of Classic Winchesters out for a little "Play-date" Model 88 in .243 win. and a Model 94 in 32 win. special. 65 and 80 years old respectively. Even when little hic-cups occur, they still fun to play around with!!

I've run across a few of these on the Used Gun Shelves lately. Mainly in 30-06 or 243. The original owners have either died or let them go for one reason or another. The FIRST thing you should check, when buying these old used guns is to run your fingers along either side of the barrel to make sure there is no bulge. I have seen more than 1 of these with a bulged barrel around the rear sight aperture. A lot of times the original owners diassembled the rifles by taking the barrels off or switching to another caliber and they didn't properly tighten down the barrels. This resulted in an overpressure situation and damaged the barrel. Just check them before you buy them.
Here in Australia we have a heap of experience with .303 smle and no4 sporters, they really don't like soft points much and most of mine only shoot well with 174g fmj .312 bullets with ppu brass.
the VR80 does not like anything below 1330 fps anything above is ok
... trouble is you can't get parts for the 740s & 742s any more ... the current model is the 750
... I owned both a Remington 742 (30-06 sprng) & later a 7400 (308 win) ... the 7400 had fewer but more robust bolt locking lugs than the 742 (4 vs 9) and a better reinforced receiver ... they both did the job if they were properly cleaned ... some think drowning them in oil is a substitute for a good & thorough cleaning regimen ... WRONG !
... if you don't full length stroke those leverguns with gusto they will jam up on you
That is true, the stroke needs to be "with deliberate, purposeful and sufficient power" from beginning to end. The thing is, you observe I had no issue with the Model 94. It ran fine. The issue I encountered with the model 88 evidenced itself to be one of either magazine spring strength, (or lack thereof), or that possibly, the lips of the magazine might need to be tweaked just a bit. It wasn't that the rifle was failing to properly seat a single round during the loading process, it was that each time I experienced the issue, not one, but two rounds were being allowed to strip from the magazine for chambering. So, the bolt was certainly making the full rearward travel of the loading stroke, and being as I am quite accustomed to levering the 94 and others like it, I may well have been giving it more "gusto" on the return stroke than was needed, or, than the magazine spring and lips could compensate for, and thusly, the issue occuring. I really couldn't say which without further testing. And unless the guy that owns it decides to sell it for a price that would seem fair and equitable to us both, I doubt I'll ever get the chance to see. But, who knows, never say never!! Thanks for stoppin by and checking it out, have a great new year!!
... the model 88 and 94 are both pre-64s which is a good thing
Thank you for your amazing job , I learned something new for me from your channel.

Thanks for the video! Enjoyed seeing two very nice condition old Winchester lever guns, and a unique post-war German occupation era optic. I had, at one time, a rifle I bought from a retired USAF Lt Col, the Sako copy of the Model 88 they called the Finnwolf. It used their proprietary scope rings, the magazines wouldnt quite interchange, it did have marginally better barrel mounted sights on a two inch longer barrel with the same gritty, heavy trigger as my 88's and Model 100's. Take 'er easy, dont wear the barrel out of that 1945 dated 32!
Hey thanks for stoppin in and dropping the comments and the little cross history fact. Don't think I'll have to worry bout wearin out the barrel on the 32 special, won't be shootin much that's for sure, (at least not until I get new lenses in my old tired eyes), lol that little front pip is tiny! 20 years ago that would not have been an issue. . . sucks getting old!
Thank you for the video Brad. I really like the look of the 88 and seems to be a good shooter too.
Hey carbon, it does shoot quite well, for running just cheap ol PMC ammo and wearing a 70+ year old scope! Thanks for stoppin by!
I can honestly say when I tuned into Brad Branch the last thing I thought I’d see a Berlin pecker or a 79 year old pecker. Excuse me, Pecar. 😂😂😂

I ve got the same model 88 also in 243win it was my dads Man its the smoothest lever action I’ve ever shot
Very nice looking as well. I may be looking up one if possible.
My KDS9C runs 115 grain ammo flawlessly so far at 1100 rounds. The problem is with 124 grain ammo. Failure to feed happens constantly. I guess I’ll call Kimber tomorrow and send it in for repair.
Sent an email to Ruger and got replacement regulator in less than a week
Brad, look into the kns adjustable gas piston. Helps this rifle out a bit

Brad Branch, master of milsurp wheeling and dealing!!
I really dig these ol war-horses, so to speak. She runs like a champ and spits fireballs like a dragon, sights leave a little to be desired and the tendency to primer swipe is aggravating, but hell, the round is a fast assed deep puncher for sure @ 1560 at the muzzle with an 85 grn projo!
@ well, get her cut for a red dot! I am totally kidding. Thanks again for the videos and explanations!!
@@triggerbarPhD Right!! lol and thanks for stoppin in and droppin the comments trigger bar, always glad to hear from ya brother!

Now, can that be a potential weak point?
@@thePrussian well, it would seem to me that any piece of metal in any piece of machinery that moves in a manner it really wasn’t designed to move in has the potential for being a point and issue of concern no doubt. You can rest assured I will be looking into ways to remediate this issue, because it’s gonna bug the hell outta me until i do! Lol
once again Brad you run into some odd problems. thank you for the video.
@@carbonspyder235 yeah, if something’s gonna go sideways, you can rest assured I’ll probably find it lol
Brad, a suggestion. Why not try a temporary shim such as card stock. If it works a permanent one made of metal. (a feeler gauge blade maybe) Attached with a permanent adhesive or a tiny spot or two of Tig weld. Just a suggestion.
@@GreyShooterthat thought did occur to me while i was checkin it right before the video, also, i could reduce the nose length by a .001 or so and possibly remedy the issue that way, but that’s a dicey propostion ss well. I’ve done that before, and had great success, but it sure gets me antsy while i’m doin it!! Lol
Thanks Brad 👍

Love Toks! Russian/ commie officers had to qualify with these on targets at 100 meters! Very flat shooting and hard hitting, the round doesn't have much bullet drop inside 100 meters. (108 yards) The 7.62x25 round is essentially a shortened AK-47 round. These are AWESOME EDC carries because they are very thin pistols and conceal well, virtually no shirt printing. This pistol is great for WOMEN too because of the smaller grip. Very amenable to smaller female hands. I bought one of these for each daughter and my wife as CC carries. And yes... they will shred level III and IIIA kevlar like butter. The first vid i ever saw of this pistol? A guy was blowing chunks out of a Toyota Forerunner brake drum leaned against a barn! Ordered my first Tok that afternoon! 😁
I have a 1927 model 12 that has been my bowling pin / everything else gun forever and literally hundreds of thousands of rounds through it. It's the definition of "Smooth". Granted, it was pretty well used when I got my hands on it. The only hang-ups I've had with it is when it gets really hot the plastic shells melt to the chamber and cause it to stick. They are very tight chambers built back when the shells were waxed cardboard. I've learned to put a little grease on my shells and it mitigates the issue. But with your gun being so "new" your probably right that it needs to be broken in. Have fun😀🤘
Y
Hey there youngster, I enjoyed your series on the SFAR. I own one and experienced none of the issues that you encountered. I also own a 742 Remington in .308 and have loved it for many years. Don't let the kiddies mess with you. Keep up the good work.
Those guns are not the best deer rifle, if that’s all you got , okay. I had one, was okay accurate, it would be a great open sight find when driving deer, however I have a few other rifles that are more accurate and I hun with those.
Worst peice of crap that Remington every made. They eat themselves up. Had 2. Worst mistakes in the gun world I ever made. 1:35
Glad ta hear ya got a good'n. In 72, I was tryin my damnedest to sell em in my off duty time, but the fellas up round Great Falls wantin a CF semi auto, given the choice, would opt, dependin on their budget, fer the Model 100 or the BAR. Lever guns was still runnin close second to bolt guns then, autos laggin way back. GIs from the south and the east might nose around the semi's some, but most eventually succumbed to a bolt gun. Loved them old Weavers. Odd thing about most of the scopes of the day was that the adjustments often took a few rounds to "settle in" and stay put. Meanin that yer first group after a gross adjustment might be, well, gross! Then, she'd settle in, and give you a good group. Not uncommon to see fellas adjust their scope, then give er a couple or three raps with a pocket knife or screwdriver handle, especially on a cold day, as the grease on the tubes inside would overpower the springs, and well, you get the idear. Merry Christmas!
@@darreldwalton8763 yep, on them older units i always figured the neccessary adjust, took it several marks past intended set point once or twice, and they’d settle right in. Thanks for stoppin in and leaving the comments, best of the holidays to ya!!

I had both the 742 and the 760 wish I still had em ... now I have the Remington 81 in 300 savage.. lots of fun.
I have a December 1968, BDL Custom Deluxe in 30-06, harvested a Buck and Doe this season. When I started hunting 40 years ago, Opening day sounded like a war. Most of the hunters were from the New York City area. I purchased this 742 a few years ago because it was purchased new by the owner who only used it for opening day. I took it apart and cleaned it. Apparently this guy only cleaned the barrel. I removed the trigger and it had that brown looking varnish from the original lube from the factory. I took the rifle to the range to use my Leupold Vari-X II 2-7 scope on Kwik Site see thru mounts. No jams at all. I think the original owner probably put a box in this rifle. It’s soft shooting. I also own a Remington 7600 pump in 30-06 and you know it’s a 30-06 from the recoil. I remember after the hunting season, Gander Mountain would have a sale on used rifles. I could’ve purchased a Remington 7400 synthetic for $300.00 instead bought a Savage model 11 Thumbhole stock in .300WSM for $250.00 like new. I definitely did well buying the Savage. I think the reason it was cheaper than the Remington was because of the caliber. Unfortunately, Gander Mountain closed and those deals are long gone. I paid cash for the Remington and got a fair deal considering this rifle is selling for over $650.00 on Gunbroker now.

@@destroyingdadxx2274 I use the Lucas Extreme, does a great job, don’t take much!
Brad nice buy! I have my grandpas old 740 30-06 and also a new Remington 750, the last version of that gun. Love them both. My 740 unfortunately does jam often. Unfortunately it was never well maintained and when I broke it down there was considerable rust on the rails and recoil spring. I still love it and will keep it forever. I have taken several deer with it and though it often jams, it always fires the first round which usually is all I need anyway. The newer 750 in 308 runs like a top. Thanks for the video and Merry Christmas!
