E21 Steering Rack Bushing Replacement

How to replace steering rack bushings on an e21 BMW. Torque to spec. If not found online I'd suggest around 75ft*lbs for the 17mm bolts and 50ft*lbs for the 13mm bolts... See comments if someone has posted the actual values! Hope I saved you at least an hour when you're attempting this job! And good luck if you are going to attempt it

Brandon, great tutorial! I have two 760 motors that are leaking. Can you rebuild them for me? Also, could you let me know how much it would cost? Thanks.
@brstarks7 Hi Brandon, I`m interested in repairing my FAAC 760. How can I contact you? Thanks, Alex
Great Vide, I would like to have you rebuild my 760 operator. What is the best way to contact you? Thanks very much!
Hola, saludos le escribo porque tengo una maquina igualita. Pero no se como... perdi la bomba del aceite. Y si uds pudiersn enviarme foto de la parte abajo, estaria muy agradecida. 🙏
Just finished this job. Getting the rack back in, while at the same time preventing the front spacers from falling out was very challenging. Best way I found to do this, was to disconnect the tie rod ends from the knuckles, and to install the 13mm bolts and spacers prior to attempting to put the rack back in place. Installing the 13mm bolts helps keep the two plate halves in the correct position, and will allow you to place the front spacers in place, without them falling out from the sandwiched halves (it seems impossible to install the spacers once the mounting holes are in the correct position due to the dimpled mounting surfaces on which the spacer sits. You must place the spacers in place within the rack mounting tabs, before attempting to get the rack in its correct position). Disconnecting the tie rod ends gives the steering rack more free movement, allowing you to mount it easier. With the tie rods STILL connected, I came very close to getting the rack in, but it was misaligned by about 3/4 of an inch due to the tires having turned while I attempted to hammer the rack in. Disconnecting the tie rod ends allowed me to fine tune the rack to the left/right, allowing perfect alignment of the 17mm bolt holes. Then you simply point the tires in the correct orientation and reconnect the tie rod ends. To install the 13mm bolts and spacers, I first used the 17mm bolt and nuts W/O the spacers to hold the front half in place. Then I used two clamping pliers to clamp down the rear half. This allowed me to easily install the 13mm bolts and spacers. Otherwise you may have trouble aligning the bolts, holes, and spacer, with the force of the new bushing pressing out on the two plate halves.
Not a bad idea mate
Dang the drawing. You're a beast great vid!
good video, I'm just replacing my sump and this will help me remove my rack for access too it.

Thank you. My mom passed away in 2017 and I needed a reminder of what I was doing wrong. Already broke a needle. Watching a master at work brought me many emotions.
Sorry to hear about mom, she gave great instructions!!!, God Bless and Thank You!!!
You are an absolute legend
Takes one to know one!
I can't get the two plates back into the subframe. What a pain in the ass 🥲
I hope you got it!
Try disconnecting the tie rod ends, also, you can hammer the top mounting tabs on the subframe slightly to make the steering rack tabs fit a little easier. Once the lips of the steering rack tabs are INSIDE the subframe mounting tabs, you can hammer on the steering rack mounting plate. There is a bend towards the front-middle of the plate, where you can place a flat head screw driver and hammer it into place.
How much to do mine?
A new system with new motors in the SF Bay Area will cost around $6000. You might be able to find a new FAAC motor online for ~$1500 per motor. I can repair a motor for around $1000 total. The gasket kit costs about $140, the piston-rod-cylinders will cost about another $300. After shipping (to and from) you'll be at around ~$500 depending on your proximity to me. I'd repair it for a flat fee of $500 after that (500+500=1000). However, this will be up to you to properly install (bleed the hydraulic fluid in the motor and properly time). I will not give out a warranty for this reason
Obrigada

If the lever is broken then you will need to have it repaired. If the foot is broken then you will need to have it replaced. If the rod is out of adjustment you will need to adjust it. Be careful of needle timing with rod adjustment as this could result in snapping needles! -----GOOGLE TRANSLATE---- Si la palanca está rota, deberá repararla. Thanks for a great video and for opening up the comments! I have a couple of questions as I wait for the gasket kit to arrive: 1 - How did you position the pinion when you put everything back together. When FAAC ships it they have it set for the gate to be in a partially open position. Is that what you did? 2 - How do you refill it with hydraulic fluid? Do you just fill the reservoir and cycle the unit to move fluid into the cylinders, or do you somehow fill the cylinders in addition to the reservoir? 3 - What was involved in setting the braking and pressure bypass levels after the rebuild? Did you try yo fine tune it, or was that not really necessary? Again, thanks for a delightful video. I really appreciate the detail, and I bet it was hard to do that while you were also shooting the video!
1. I after bleeding the system I put the pinion in the gate wide open position and install it with the gate wide open. 2. To bleed the system yes as FAAC states in their manual you are to fill the reservoir and cycle various times, letting air out of the bleeding bolts. This takes about 10 cycles until the pistons start to budge and then you should refill the reservoir. After they are moving as they should top off the fluid in the reservoir. 3. if you are just putting in new pistons seals you do not want to adjust anything from what it used to be in that department. The manual does not provide the best info on how to tune the motors but with small adjustments of 1/4 turns and cycling you will begin to be able to get both sides of the gate even. If you have a wall on one side of your gate prepare for the gate to possibly hit the wall beforehand. the motor in the video had to be rebuilt again due to putting in the cylinder walls. You may want to get those parts too. If I was asked to do this again I would buy the piston cylinders from FAAC for $200 and get the piston seals on eBay for $20. They are 60*70*7 hydraulic piston seals. I did not mention it in the video but they install in one direction. So keep note of that when you remove the old seals. 4. Thank you and good luck with yours! I can do them in about 2 hours now and have had one gate working for over a year and the other has over 4 months (but with new cylinders I think it should be good for years to come). 5. Thanks Rick for getting me to get this info out there. I’m sure with my help and yours a lot more of these things will be in use.
@@brstarks7 I wonder if yoou could initially fill the two cylinders by removing the bleed bolts and filling thru those holes? It would be nice if FAAC produced some kind of document on their method for returning the FAAC 760 to its initial state after conducting a repair.
@@brstarks7 Just for clarification, are you recommending to buy new replacements for the two metal cylinders rather than trying to clean and reuse the existing ones? Was that where you were experiencing fluid leakage and loss of pressure?
I did not do this but I’m sure it would not hurt the system to do. FAAC just states to fill and refill the reservoir during the bleeding process.
Yes for one of the 2 motors I rebuilt the leakage was coming from one of the metal cylinders. They are quite expensive and also hard to find but I feel like a machine shop should be able to make you new ones (if they are no longer available) as they seem to be identical to piston sleeves.

How painful was this to do on your back? Contemplating lowering the rack myself to clean it up and replace control arms. Hit me up man!! I’d appreciate it.
Really. Really easy. I can’t believe I waited +year to do the job. If you look closely the zip ties helped a lot and there’s holes for them (possibly for shipping purposes in the past). But yeah I had the opportunity to do it with the engine out and regretted not doing it... I don’t think it would have made the job easier.... Definitely safer without the engine tho!
