The Way of Saint James
This was our first Camino, a tryout really to see if we would like it and could do it, from Viana de Castelo in Portugal to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Eight years later we leave in September to do our 7th Camino (The English Way) and our 8th Camino from SdC to Finesterre. The music is by Larry Penisula and used by permission.

My sister and I walked our first camino, porto to afife, a few weeks ago. We had to stop due to the flu (me). We are hoping to do the spiritual variant maybe next year. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Thanks for sharing your journey. So many gems.
So when you went inland were you still on the Costal Route or did you move to the Central Route. We are 70 and walking in the fall next year so that hill looked tough. We were hoping to stay along the coast.
The walk from Esposende to Viana do Castelo is still on on the coastal route and the uphill portions are relatively short in duration. If you look at my other videos you'll see how close you will be to the ocean for most of the walk. Here is a link to a video that shows the Camino track we took each day and youll get a good idea of how flat the Portuguese Coastal route is. Skip ahead to the 8 minute mark to start in Porto. You're going to have a great trip. Have lots of fun and feel free to ask me any questions. I love helping people do their Camino. th-cam.com/video/LOL_KQMUvjA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0oT8a1sYXZOHcTuF
I’m learning how to make Italian sausage from my Italian friend who is 86 years old. I never knew how it was done. Thank you for your video and your recipe.
Beautiful morning Martin. 😮
Thank you.
I'm taking the same route Sept 2024 and it was SO beneficial to see this route mapped out. Really helpful - thank you!
Thanks Carol. If you change directions you'll find us on the Norte, and English Camino's in September. Have a great journey.
I know there are old videos but do you have any recommendations for hostels along the way …. Or do you know any websites to look on to find out a bit more info on accommodations … I want to go next year but am concerned about hostels etc … and how to find them
Hi Brett, I have a spreadsheet of accommodations that I'd be happy to send to you. It's a couple of years old so you should verify whether they are still available or not. There is also a great guide book by Sandy Brown that I think has resources for lodging. We always found places to stay, but the pilgrim infrastructure isn't as good as on the Camino de Santiago. I encourage you to go on the journey if you can. It's difficult, and worth every step. Email me at meidbo@outlook.com and I'll send you what I've got.
Been Camino.
I'm starting this one in April 2024! I did the French Way several years ago and have wanted to go back ever since!
Great video. Looking forward to do the route next summer. Thanks, folks👋
How much is on the road-pavement?
Quite a lot for us because of the lack of accommodations and the necessity to walk to the various places we stayed. Still, we had a great trip.

Hi Martin! thanks for this video :) my partner and I are planning to do this route in the early spring, but i was a bit concerned about the amount of highway walking you had to do. Could you let me know: what % of the walk was on footpaths compared to main roads?
I think it depends on the time of year. Our trip was in July and August, when lodging was a little harder to secure. As a result we modified our route to get to the various accommodations. I think if you go befor July or after August the selection will be much better. At any rate, even with our travel on the roads it was an amazing trip that I cherish. I hope you do it, take lots of pictures and video, and drop me a note when you're finished so I can congratulate you.
You made the right decision!
Hello! Thank you so much for sharing this video! My friends and I are planning on going the northen way of St francisike you did! However, i was wondering if I really need to wear the hiking boots or running shoes would be ok to walk on the course? From your video it seems like the most of the roads are flat-ish (?)
Whatever you are comfortable wearing. Most of the trails are paths, and the roads are roads. I wore boots because thats what I'm comfortable in. Have a great trip. It's hard, but worth it.
@@meidbo Thank you so much for your reply and advice! :)
I am in the initial stages of planning my Camino Portuguese starting mid April 2023. This will be my 5th Camino, the first four were the Camino Francis. There are not that many TH-cam videos showing Lisbon as a starting point. I have attempted to listen to you tell the viewer where you stayed, but I cannot decipher the last name. I got VIP something. Some of the videos include comments and show where they stayed, which is most helpful. Unfortunately so far you have not done that. Nor did you say the name of the small village where you spent the night. Or how many kilometers you walked yesterday. Maybe in future videos you’ll have a bit more information of the type that I seek.
Thank you for your comments. The hotel we stayed at was the VIP Hotel Irish. Although it was a fine hotel I wouldn't recommend it because it backtracked to far toward Lisbon. Because of Covid we opted for hotel stays instead of Albergue . The hotel selection was limited as well which is why we chose it. Have fun on your Camino.
Thank you for your lovely videos!
What size die did you use
I'm not sure what size it is but I would say it is a course die. It's definitely not fine. Die size is largely a matter of preference where one is not necessarily better than another. Make the sausage, fry it up, and enjoy what you've done. Let me know how it goes.
It's called WAY OF ST JAMES, and used by permission from a talented song writer named Larry Pennisula.
What is the wonderful song the video start with
I made 1000 grams of kielbasa today. After the protein extraction in the mixer, it was pretty sticky. I was impressed with what I was doing. _....all the way up to the time when I started to use the kitchen-aid sausage tube!_ *WHAT A PAINFUL MESS!* The easiest part was when I pushed the last of the sausage through the tube. *WITH MY FINGER.* Needless to say, I bought a Lem stuffer after I was finished. I would love to have 5 minutes with the person who designed that plastic attachment!
Thanks you for sharing your beautiful vidéo. Next year I will do the same camino and i'm really in a hurry to be there. This will be my third camino. Thak you again and be well. Thomas
Buen Camino Thomas. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time. I've done the Portuguese Camino 3 times now.
Lovely and such fun to watch. I love the combination of photos, video, print and narration. Seems like you stayed in hostels/hotels along the way. Is that right? Is it possible to tent camp?
Thank you for your kind words. I think one could tent camp but sites might be hard to identify because so much of the real estate is either active farm land, orchard or residential. Stealth camping would probably be easier.
The first time I did this I had the water flow too high. Using two hands to open the casing the water shot it, the casing expanded really quick and with force. The casing came out of the bowl and proceeded to go down the drain. Now using one hand to hold onto the casing, I turned the water off and proceeded to pull about 7 feet of casing out of the kitchen drain. It was one of those what the (I leave the last word to your discredition) moments. Re assuming my composure I decided to use a new length of casing and the rest is history.
Thank you for deciding to use a new length of casing. As a homeowner who has fixed and replaced kitchen plumbing a few times myself I don't need to imagine the putrid horrors that your first 7 feet of casings visited during it's dark journey.
I love how people use a mixer to grind up meats but then they use their hands to mix the seasoning in. Hello it's a mixer people just grind it into the mixing bowl and goto town. Geez......
It overworks the meat and makes it tough.
I was waiting for you to use the horn that comes with the KitchenAid. You totally cheated! LOL... I made my first batch of sausages using nothing but the KitchenAid and while the grinding portion went well, the stuffing was a total PITA!
Great video and great narration!
Thank you.
I utterly love the Morricone piece used in the video. I am pretty sure it's Gabriel's Oboe from "The Mission". I've never come across a version of the song I don't like! Thanks for the video!
You're right, Gabriel's Oboe.
Hi Martin, Thanks for posting both of the videos from your trip along the Way of St Francis. How did you find the signage of the route compared to the Camino Frances? Look forward to your next trip on the Portugues.
Hi Quarentine Cyclist. The signage isn't as good but it is adequate. The biggest factor for us was the scarcity of accommodations in the summer months. It seems that many hoteliers head for the beach during the summer. We had to modify our route to find accommodations which took us off the path at times. This was no problem though because google maps was very good at identifying walking routes to anywhere you want to go.
Here is a vid of my Portuguese Camino from Porto in 2018. th-cam.com/video/JXpUPjONx-g/w-d-xo.html
Well done on your trip two years ago. I bet you were pleased to do it now before the pandemic hit! I am interested in this walk ( I have also completed the Camino Frances and the Portuguese Camino) how does it compare for other pilgrims walking? We’re there other pilgrims on the route? Was it your best option to stay in Hotels on route? Hope you manage to get more walks in. I have enjoyed your videos thank you.
Thanks for this vid. I had been planning to do the Camino from France a few years ago but due to some back and hip issues, I could d not do it and still don’t think I could. But even though I am a big fan of Portugal I had not considered this route until now. Thanks for the inspiration. Even if I don’t make it, the video gives me a nice feeling. Happy Walking.
Well Done 👍
My Dad and Hank Olson's recordings from the late 40's and early '50s. You can smoke those sausages, too!
Marty...did you do that with a single pork butt?
Yes Sean. A pork but weighs 8 - 10 lbs. At Cash and Carry the sell them in a two pack.
@@meidbo Thanks. I have bought those packs for the smoker. We are trying our hands at grinding own hamburger first and then might have to attempt the sausage!
@@iamsunnydude I get pork butt at Smart Food Service. You can also get it at Costco. Both have the best prices for boneless butt. Nobody likes a boney butt anyway.

If there is one thing TH-cam has taught me is just how true it is (especially these days) to say : WE STAR IN OUR OWN LIVES. Spend any 6 hours on any day you choose to do so watching Camino vlogs. Some will cover their whole Camino walk (be it from the French,Portuguese ,Swiss or northern Spain end) in 30-plus 45 to 1 hour segments. Others will represent their experience within a single vlog lasting a handful of minutes.Alexandra Liss ( 'I would walk...'), SummitXtreme,Saint Max Media, etc., not only do the longer vlogs, but they add music, maps, and so forth. No matter the level of commitment and competence the point is the same: showing a moment in our lives; our unsung lives. So watch Mr Martin Eidbo's vlogs.Watch everyones.Watch because ordinary people are always more interesting and more diverse in their experiences and abilities than a long list of prats who just-so-happen to be famous. ( Why do I suddenly get a head full of Golden Globe flashbacks.......................?!).
Thanks for your kind words. Buen Camino.
