How You Can Make Events and Gatherings More Inclusive
We all want to feel included, respected, and like our needs matter. This is especially for events and gatherings big and small. Watch this to learn some tips and prespectives to help be more inclusive.
As someone on the spectrum of blindness, I have had thousands of experiences where accomodations were ether not provided, thought of, or considered with no effort at all. I was much less enthusiastic to ever attend that venue, event, or gathering again.
With awareness and effort, you can help be a part of the solution and not contribute to the problem with lack of prep and planning.

    Hey, my name is Amey and I live in northern Cali I am a mother of two and I have a gorgeous little grandbaby that is three in November. I had a stroke when I was 27 and I am partially paralyzed on my right side. I went blind when I was 33 and in March they amputated my right leg so I am 48 now and I am crazy depressed and I will try to keep my potty mouth to a minimum L O L anyway, I just wanted to ask how to do some basic stuff about make up. I used to be cute and I didn’t have any problems like I do now There’s a lot of of crap that obviously I can’t do but I still want to look normal and appear to be normal looking. just wanted to tell you that your channel rocks and I will keep listening to your shit. I didn’t tell you how I can talk about all of this, but the department of rehab taught me how to use an iPad about 13 years ago and I am so grateful to all of the guys that made it possible anyway I’m chattering too much. Take it easy and thanks for letting me know that I’m not alone in this blind world I don’t see black I see white and it drives me crazy. I don’t know how many other people see black versus white. I guess it’s called JonBenét syndrome. anyway, take it easy. 😬🤬🤬

    Extremely helpful video. I have flown a few times alone now. Never had an issues with the airport or airline staff. Fellow passengers have been either lovely or plain nasty. I think the latter don't fully understand why a blind person would prefer a window seat - "You can'r see out the window buddy". Nor why I am blind, but can use a cell phone and feed myself. I don't like having to justify myself. The godsend to air travel alone for me has been Airtags from Apple. Precision location with audible guiding. I have the in my luggage, wallet etc.

    Independence is my biggest struggle. I've been visually impaired since birth, so I've never driven. I use Uber and am not afraid to ask friends or family for help, but it's still hard to not be able to go where I need (or want) to go right when I want to. Planning ahead is key, as if having a Plan B and know who I can truly rely on. For example, I discovered that the van for those with disabilities isn't helpful for appointments because they can arrive late or early and still be considered "on time." I tend to stick to what works and causes less stress.

  • @jeanettehanscome108
    @jeanettehanscome108 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    P.S. No one has pulled me by my cane, but every time I go through security, the agent takes my cane away to put it through the metal detector separately. I always want to tell them, "You aren't supposed to take a visually impaired person's cane." But I'm afraid of getting in trouble.

  • @jeanettehanscome108
    @jeanettehanscome108 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I love this video and plan to start following your channel more. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and perspective. I am visually impaired (classified legally blind due to congenital achromatopsia) and have traveled solo several times, including internationally. I have had wonderful and frustrating experiences. Like you, I always call the airline to request assistance, consider preboarding an absolute must, and have learned to use my white cane when traveling by myself. The wheelchair issue is hard for me too. I totally get the reasoning behind it, but I struggle with feeling disrespected when the airport insists I use one. In the end, I decided going with the flow is worth it if I can get to my flight safely and on time. I agree that a lot of bad experiences happen because of lack of education and understanding of how to serve those with disabilities. Part of me wants to sit every airport assistant down and gently tell them, "A person in need of assistance is still a grown up. Please speak respectfully. Speak TO the person you are assisting, not to the person pushing the wheelchair. They have the same desire to get a coffee or snack or visit the shops during a long layover as everyone else, so it would be great if you could make it clear they are allowed to do that." My most upsetting experience took place at London Heathrow. My assistant pushed me up to security, the agent asked me, "Are you able to walk through the metal detector?" I said yes and started to get up, and my assistant insisted, "No. Stay in the chair." All I could think of to do was joke, "I guess no." So they patted me down. It was humiliating. I included the story in my customer evaluation. However, when my connection got canceled, British Airways took such good care of me. They rescheduled my flight, booked a hotel room for me, got me there and back to the airport the next morning. If hadn't requested airport assistance, I would've been on my own and totally stranded. In August, I'm flying through Heathrow again on my way to teach at a writing Seminar outside Geneva, Switzerland. I'll let you know how it goes! 😄

    BIG question!! I just posted on another one of your posts... Sorry 😕 I'm a new follower, my husband was diagnosed with stargardts. My husband says wearing sunglasses make it much harder for him to see. He won't wear them being outside because of that. Even though he was told otherwise and knows sunglasses will protect his eyes. Any suggestions??? Thanks

  • @shelly82mm
    @shelly82mm 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hello! I'm new to your channel and am enjoying it. I am searching around doing research because my husband was just diagnosed with stargardts 10 months ago. He went from 20/20 vision to Legally Blind 20/200, 20/400 within a matter of 6 months! Lost everything, every ability he's ever known for 44 years. We have a large family, 8 children. He cannot perform the job he had prior and he has absolutely no idea what he can do to go on being a provider for his family. It breaks my heart to see him struggle. I am researching all I can to help in through this. He is, as he says "not ready" to move forward. Finding assistance or help with his vision loss and I am practically begging him to start finding help. How can I, being his wife and biggest supporter help him through this trial? How can I help him? I know people with stargardts thrive but he is not understanding of that and I want him to flourish! any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You! For your channel ❤️ Also, I would like to add. We were not given much info or support. Just diagnosed and can't do much more for you. We have been figuring this out on our own knowing nothing.
