MEMORIAL SERVICE for Dr. Marvin James 'Jim" Penton (1932 - 2024)
Memorial Service held at St. James Anglican Church, 8 Burwell St
Paris, Ontario, Canada, on 16 November 2024.
Jim's Obituary Notice
Peacefully, in the Palliative Care Unit of the Brantford General Hospital, with his wife, Beth and granddaughter, Rea by his side passed from this life on November 4, 2024. Jim was in his 93rd year. He was preceded in death by his parents, Levis Bosworth Penton and Ida Emily Penton, his brother, Edwin, his late wife, Marilyn and infant son, Philip André. He is survived by his wife, Beth, his children, David, John (Shona) and Anne (Bob) and foster daughter Linda (Willie). He is also survived by eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Born in Saskatchewan, Jim lived an extraordinary life as a professor of history and religious studies. Jim was the only surviving member of the original Department of History at the University of Lethbridge. Fluent in Spanish, he first taught in Puerto Rico, followed by universities in the states of Upper Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa, as well as in Calgary. Jim was an amazing man and an example of Christian living, always an advocate for the downtrodden and abused. He and his first wife, Marilyn, took a number of people into their home when there was someone in crisis who needed their nurturing, be it family or stranger.
Jim actively researched and wrote up until the time of his passing. His most recent efforts were devoted to a book on religious persecution in Canada, with a focus on the history of indigenous people in Canada. This work will be published posthumously. In recent years Jim founded Hart Publishers Inc. In collaboration with his close friends Rud Persson and Eric Wilson, Jim oversaw the publication of important works on the history of Jehovah’s Witnesses. During his academic career, Jim authored and published several important books through University of Toronto Press. He was known as an excellent teacher at the University of Lethbridge, and continued to give very popular lectures and courses at the Burlington Seniors Centre after retirement.
On the personal side, Jim loved gardening. Each spring and summer Jim and wife Beth lovingly tended the raised garden beds in their back yard. He was also an animal lover, and took particular joy in making sure the bird feeder in the back yard was kept full.
Jim was very proud of his Métis heritage through his maternal grandmother Florestine Gariépy. As a young man, Jim relocated from his birth province of Saskatchewan to sunny Arizona for health reasons. There his exposure to Mexican food, language and music fostered a life-long love of Latin American culture. In Tucson he met and married Marilyn Kling, his late first wife and mother of his children. Jim and Marilyn were together until her death.
Jim found great happiness late in life with his wife Beth. They provided each other with love and support and a shared commitment to Christian values. Their union brought great joy to family on both sides.
Friends will be welcomed at the Dwayne D. Budgell Funeral Home, 1105 Rest Acres Road, Paris, Ontario on Friday, November 15 from 7 - 9 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. James Anglican Church, 8 Burwell St, Paris, Ontario on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 11 a.m. Jim's service will be live streamed starting at 10:50 a.m. Cremation has already taken place as per Jim’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations to St James Anglican Church, Paris would be appreciated by the family.
Online condolences and donations may be made at www.budgellfuneralhome.ca

I love and respect Dr Heiser. I wonder though why he has the biblical writer borrowing from Babylonian imagery. To me it sounds like there is reality and that was passed down to Babylonians and Mayans and Sumerians and everyone else, which is why they all have wind serpents. It's because it comes from reality, not from a culture that the writer of Isaiah is then borrowing from.

Very good point. The roots of Abraham's culture are in Mesopotamia, though. Abraham came from the city of Ur. Also his own father Terah had teraphim idols; at Joshua 24:2 he is mentioned as a worshiper of other gods, an idolater. And, the Jewish Midrash Genesis Rabbah 38 says that Terah made and sold idols. So it would seem that since early on in the cultural environment of the worship of Yahweh, Abraham would have been well acquainted with Babylonish/Mesopotamian religious practices. However, considering there are similar echos of religious practice and iconography a common source of these traditions and beliefs is quite plausible; I'd tend to agree.

Sounds like an alcoholic… and his wife … can you trust a man’s mind and heart when he’s got POISON in his system. Alcohol is absolutely horrible for us. I grew up with both parents and brother alcoholism. Abuse , assault , insane behavior but hey brother morris can do what the fuck he wants he’s 144,000 CHOSEN by Jehovah himself . Maybe he was just drunk when he came out as anointed .

Excellent! Some believe that the Scribes and Pharisees deliberately changed Genesis 11 in the MT to move Abraham into the lifespan of Shem so they could claim Melchizedek was Shem to deny the book of Hebrews claim that Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek. That makes an awful lot of sense. But couldn't it be that they modified more verses than that? And _that's_ why there are discrepancies?

Christ, according to the original Ancient Greek New Testament, not the concept next written in Hebrew to capture the minds of many in a lie, is a drug that moves one into a near death experience so as to communicate to diamon, knowledge, which is that which is without time. The antidote comes from the semen of children, of 12 year old boys; Jesus's true disciples, who through their body, similar to a vaccine, take in the drug to create the antidote... has to be pure as a lamb and also these boys must have gone through the rituals to become the vessel.

I remember before 1975 the phrase stay alive till 75 you think they would get it the Bible says anybody that takes or adds to is a false prophet also anybody predicting the end is a false prophet I was raised in it. I am now fixing to turn 56 years old and my life has not been great since my disfellowshipping in 1996 I married an elder's daughter in 1990 we ended up having two daughters 5 years into our marriage she committed adultery with the guys who work with at her job ended up divorcing me marrying him I got disfellowshipped for drinking caused by her infidelity she ended up not happened to Have a judicial committee was never disfellowshipped she has had a relationship with her family who are still witnesses and my family who are witnesses so I've spent almost 30 years not speaking to my family they not speaking to me I'm not even alive to them but she's had a relationship with her family all these years even though she never went back and by the way she's on her third marriage now. I lost everything my family owned a business that I had a very good living out of I got kicked out of that and I've had to struggle all these years and by the way in the last 3 days I found out from a cousin who's no longer a witness my mother is in ICU in serious condition she is 83 years old now my sister didn't even call me to let me know anything. My mother may pass away my father died in 1999 3 years after I was disfellowshipped. When I went to his memorial I was treated like dirt on the ground and here I am wondering if my mother passes and I hope she doesn't but it doesn't look good if I will go to the memorial just to be treated like crap again. I'm a god-fearing man and I've already told them I answer to God not men who judge me for which I know elders have done worse things than I've ever done. I did text my mother her recently I told her why I will never go back I told her there's no love no compassion no mercy no Grace it's very unloving I've always thought when somebody makes a mistake and we all do you should go up and ask them what can I do to help you instead of kicking them. So it's been hell for me I love my mother and my sisters but obviously they don't love me and I've never been a bad person I have so much love and kindness in my heart.

You can be a "joiner" and still believe in a pre-tribulation rapture. 1 Thes 4:13-17 is the second coming with the one and only resurrection for the saints which is on the last day, last trumpet (John 6:39-54 & 11:24, Rev 20:4-6, 1 Cor 15:52). Luke 17:22-37 is the pre-trib rapture WITHOUT A RESURRECTION. There is a flash of light and dead bodies when life seems normal (eating, drinking, etc.). We leave our mortal flesh on earth. Why have resurrection pre-trib? Those in heaven today need a new body (1 Thes 4:14)? No, they have a heavenly body (1 Cor 15:40, 2 Cor 5:1-6). At the second coming we will need an earthly body.

As Jesus approached the hour of His greatest humiliation, His awareness of the impending betrayal and suffering did not lead to bitterness or hatred. Instead, His heart overflowed with greater love than ever before. In the face of betrayal, Jesus chose to demonstrate love through an act of profound humility. This act highlights the depth of Jesus’ love and the extent to which He was willing to go to serve His disciples, even in His darkest hour. Despite knowing that Judas would betray Him, Jesus did not exclude him from the foot washing. This act underscores the boundless nature of Jesus’ love, extending even to those who would hurt Him. It is a powerful reminder that genuine love is not selective but is extended to all, regardless of their actions or intentions.

Jesus said, REPENT and believe. He died for sinners, received the punishment for sinners. So, now we can repent of our sin, believe Christ provided the pardon for sin, then we have eternal life. Why is this so hard for people to grasp? You can’t be forgiven if you don’t repent. The Gospel isn’t, “I believe in Jesus but I don’t repent of my sins.”

I nearly joined Orthodoxy thinking I was joining the one true Church But I realized that there was no gospel when I stepped inside. Plenty of history, plenty of images, plenty of candles and plenty of well meaning people, but I realized entering that dark room "If this is the one true church, then everyone's faith outside these walls are in vain" So I asked the church father my concern and he said yes, there's no salvation outside these walls. I prayed asking the Lord "is this it? Am I to spend the rest of my life here? Is this your true church?" As I prayed, I suddenly remembered scripture Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all [d]speak the same thing, and that there be no [e]divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. 11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are [f]contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. 16 Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. Christ the Power and Wisdom of God

Regarding Malawi and Mexico, it‘s also something that irritates me. I am French and at that time (in the 80), instead of going for the military service, it was obligatory to go to prison for 1 1/2 years instead of taking a civil service - not even talking about bribing. My brother who went 4 years after me had the choice to accept the civil service.

God is love. We all fall short and sin. Love is just and merciful. Because God is loving He must judge sin, we all stand judged and are due to face His wrath as slaves of sin. Because God is merciful He provided a way out from under the weight of the law and His wrath, and a way for us to be regenerated. If we trust Jesus shed His sinless blood, died and rose from the grave He forgives us of our sins and gives us a new heart that wants to look God as our Father genuinely and delight in Him, freeing us from being slaves to sin. The rest is our mind catching up with that reality and taking hold of His teaching and truth until He returns, or we die. Antinomian's are people who will either end up no longer trusting in Jesus's atonement being drawn away by sin, or are under or misinformed Christians with a misunderstanding that God's direction is what will ultimately fulfill us.

THE ITCH Lili The trouble is you’ve caught the itch, there’ll be no rest for you You’ll scratch and scratch all day long, you’ll keep awake at night Review your soaps and lotions, change those you think to blame The constant itch, the sudden stabbing pain, there seems no blest respite Your Doctor says “it might be nerves” a sedative will tame Its now got worse and drives you mad, you feel your skin aflame. - Rub your skin with strong vinegar, it will give you two hours rest It stings the skin, you’ll cry in pain until the itch is gone Two hours rest, time to sleep, wake in the morn to scratch You don’t deserve this torture, what can you blame it on? The Specialists do all the tests for allergies and cause But it’s a blank and they give up, no symptoms, bites or rash. - Perhaps if you look back, review your actions past Hurt one of those of Wiccan bent, a child of the Dark It would explain your malady, those people won’t be crossed You’ve pointed fingers, laughed at them, a nasty smart remark If that’s the case your only choice, apologize or call your cure now lost Then keep your counsel for the future, or face a future stark.
