how long should adults skateboard?
In this video, we talk about the length of our skate sessions and nutrition tips for maximizing them. I also explain why I choose to have a "2 hour rule."

Correction (noted 12/29/24)
After posting this video, I discovered that the term “energy availability,” in the context of sports nutrition, technically refers to available energy from food intake after training/exercise , Or:
Food energy intake - exercise energy expenditure = energy availability.
In this video, I use this term referring to general energy balance, or, enough “available” energy, at any given time to meet caloric demands on the body, including physical activity (skateboarding).
I chose not to alter the video because I feel that this technicality does not change the information in a meaningful way.

ok, this is the best skatepark I've ever been to

In this video, we visit the City Walk skatepark in Birmingham, Alabama. I was told this park was amazing so needed to check it out for myself. At 58,000 square feet, and obstacles for every skill level, it lived up to the hype and is probably my favorite skatepark I've ever been to. It's big enough for older skaters that want privacy to have it, even at peak hours which is so nice. Highly recom...

Just Nash (my dog) and I, messin’ around
When I was 38 I skated 9 hours in one day. Lately I have also skated every single day of all of 2023 & 2024 as of today at the age of 42. I skate most sessions while fasting. That would mean, I break all of these rules. I'm still jumping with high energy and the local teenagers cannot keep up with me. Are you sure this info is true?
That's awesome man, keep inspiring the young skaters! And yes, I have many clients that are athletes, the information is evidenced-based, and a good starting point to help athletes fuel adequately and optimize performance.
@@frontsidehealth I have a resting heartrate of 40 Bpm. I am around 200 Pounds. I exercise and train 4-5 hours a day. The question is, what makes an "athlete" an athlete? I have tried all of kinds of methods over the last decade. I have done the things you have said. It always causes my performance to be worse. Why would that be? Why is it that my performance is best when I am fasted? Why does an ankle sprain that would take 4-6 weeks to heal as recommended, only take me 3 days for me to heal?
@@smithersskatepark I'd consider an athlete a person that participates in athletics, such as skateboarding. I don't know why these things would make your performance worse or why you seem to heal well, it would take much more time with you and information to glean more insight into how your specific body is responding to the specific intervention. As I mentioned in then video, if you already have a diet/lifestyle that is working, then I wouldn't change it. To your point, some people do prefer fasted workouts due to more perceived energy (typically due to an increase in stress hormone circulation or the "fight/flight" response) and/or just preferring to have less food in their digestive track during that time. There are many reasons diet interventions work well for one person and not well for another. However, the reason I included the information in the video is because it is in line with empirical data in the field of sports nutrition.
@@frontsidehealth Yeah. I'm not looking for the data. Or answers. I am knowledgeable in such. I wanted to ask questions. Because your performance should reflect your words.
whats your advice for me? i'm 26, but i can only sesh for like an hour and a half or 2 hours every other day before i destroy my left knee. but that hour and a half mark is when i'm the most warmed up
Thanks for the question. I would consider your total volume of activity per week, you may not be properly recovering from sessions. Are you currently doing any resistance training? You might want to check out my last video "how often should adults skateboard."
At 60 a solid hour is good for me. Any more and my legs are noodles and the slam factor increases exponentially.
I’m half your age and I can go a few hours but I wholeheartedly agree with injuries and slams becoming more of a problem once you pass a certain point, and I at least, usually know exactly when that point is… if the park is still open and you know you wanna go home, it’s time to call it.

Some good food for thought! I likely don't have a lot of store energy, being a short and skinny guy. I will for sure be more mindful about managing energy and session time. 2 hours is going to be pretty hard because I get into a bit of a high and can't stop, but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. I hear all these things about the majority of athletes in energy-intensive disciplines are using baking soda as supplement to prevent lactic acid build-up. Maybe I might have to try that to get a boost unless it's got some health repercussions.
Yeh I can relate, I need to think about these things often because I'm one of those skaters that will just ride for hours at a time and forget to rest. Be sure to fuel up !
10/10 content! LOVE IT!
thanks for watching !
If I do it everyday, then I can probably skate for like 7 hours… as long as I’m staying warmed up and not taking breaks or having a conversation. How I do it now, every 2-4 days, doesn’t feel too amazing. Mentally I’m there because skating less often makes me desire it more in some ways, but also it feels like my body is playing catch-up. I don’t know what’s happening sometimes. My knees were feeling pretty good, so I started skating harder and doing excercise but lately I feel kinda beat up, and not focused on skating as much as I was a few months ago. I have been skating for like a year, though I skated in my teens and already had kickflips, ollies, etc. I’m 33, gonna be 34 soon. My only gripe is not skating too often and then skating in a repetitive way and doing like 100 ollies (sometimes on a manual pad) for progression and then my knees feel kinda crappy. Nothing broken just meh.
Yeh I think a lot of skaters can relate. My suggestion would be to just try to stay in tune with your body and what causes you to feel wiped out, then trying to avoid that in the future and getting plenty of rest along with a well-rounded diet. Small changes over time will help move the needle!
@@frontsidehealthYes! That is the key, be healthy. I avoided alcohol all this time, a whole year but I’ve had a few lagers in the past few days and even skated at the same time. My excuse is that it’s the holidays and… I’m at peace with it. I would still say a six pack of beer can hurt my skating, recovery-wise, a lot more than a big mac ever will. Even crappy food can hurt your skating tbh (because recovery) but it’s not the worst thing. But that doesn’t discount the abuse your body incurs while skating! But in my case, I’ve learned that it’s best not to rest too long. Go out there and skate more! I don’t really believe in recovery until your body’s begging for it. 🛹 I’m eatting eggs with deli-grade american cheese, strawberries, english muffin with jelly and butter and a longboard beer!

love it keep em coming
…im 50, been on board for 37 years now. And i skate when i feel for it and when i want to. In summer often full days, if i Got the time. In vinter time 3-4 times a week indoor. I love the time spend on wheels with me friends, it keeps me Young 😉🙌🔥
I’m 44 and have been skating consistently for 30 years however in the last 10 it’s been once a week due to family and work etc. I didn’t realise how important an exercise ‘regime’ was until my family got a Peloton bike. I started with cycling and built up to strength training and yoga etc and the results have been amazing! My recovery, flexibility, stamina and ability to ‘have a good skate’ each session has been a game changer for me. I’m not saying everyone get a peloton (they are expensive) but finding a regime that keeps you fit through the week helps so much when I skate on weekends. Great channel, I’m subscribed and liking the vids ❤
hell yeh, great advice, thanks for sharing and for the support !

I mean, this kind of advice must be spread across the internet. I hope your video reaches many people 👏👏👏
Awesome! I've been searching for this type of book! So happy to hear it exists! I am curious if there is an English version available? I'm going to purchase it and promote either way to help spread then word, so happy to hear you are doing similar work, keep it up. Thank you so much for the comment!
Thanks! these tips open a new timeframe for me to skate: early mornings. 👍👍👍
That's my timeframe too! right on
Bro 👏👏👏 For what it’s worth, bra-F’N-vo! Your videos are a great addition to my algorithm. I just started seriously skateboarding (multiple sessions a week, for about 1-2 hours at a time)this past summer. I just turned 39 last month, and I can appreciate the informative, well thought out, articulate coaching you are providing not just for older guys like me, but also the younger kids just getting into skating. You’re appreciation and promotion for health and fitness may run counter to the mainstream view of a lot of skaters,(Mountain Dew and Taco Bell commercial) but it’s can attest to the physical demands of skating; it is certainly at the very least, a vigorous form of cardiovascular excessive, but in my opinion, indeed falls under the category of a sport. Your channel is a necessary niche in the skating community, especially with younger kids coming up watching people skateboard in the Olympics!
appreciate the support and kind words! and great to hear you're getting out there and skating now, right on !
"If you skate longer than an hour..." At my age (53), it takes an hour for me to even get warmed up and in a groove. There's a substantial amount of standing, sitting, and stopping/catching my breath etc. going on there too though. Ha. Conslidated skate time, from that hour, might only be 20 mins. I'm sometimes at the park for 3 or 4 hours, but consolidated skate time might not even hit 2 hrs worth. Everyone is different, but it usually takes an energy drink to snap me out of my tired haze enough to skate. Note: I do not drink energy drinks, caffiene, etc. on my non-skate days. Skating for a couple of hours, or so, usually totals me out, to the point that I will not accomplish anything else that day, BUT ITS BLOODY WELL WORTH IT!!!!! Lol. 'Just a window into what skating may look like if you're still doin it past 50! Keep rippin homie!🤙
Great insight, I appreciate this. And great point about short bouts of skating followed by resting. You can certainly skate much longer this way and would not need to focus on fueling every hour due to less activity during each hour. The fueling strategies I discussed are aimed at continuous movement, similar to endurance athletics like running or biking. I appreciate the commend and you watching! keep ripping too!
never heard this advice before. will implement it in to my morning sessions
right on
Great skating!
appreciate that!
When i skate im usually skate for maximum 2 hours. Then i skate intense without ang longer breaks. Thats what i usually can without losing all energy
Depending on how much I sleep the night before I can go from 1 to 3 hours. It's mostly just light impact stuff like transition & manuals.
sleep is huge!
3 hours straight

Knocking on the door of 32 and I resonate with a lot of what you've talked about here. As I entered my 30s I became really deliberate with how and what I would train in the gym and likewise with skating. Truly I feel as good as I ever have on my board even now. keep shredding dude, even though we might be considered old heads at the park now hahaha

Thank you for the advices, I’m 39 years old and starting skating again, and in this age we need to thinking and behavior in different way compare when we was young, other wize doesn't work.
Good advice here! I wear double knee braces when I sk8. Teeter hang Ups is so key as well to keep your disc spacing aligned. Gravity boots and a pull up bar work as well holding onto weights. Check my foam roller invention if you get a chance. Keep at it
48 years old here, for me skate is workout
I’m about to be 32 and thought I was too old to hop on my board again or afraid to get injured. But I miss it so much and this is inspiring me. Just subscribed. Thank you!
@@sethalexanderr do it! 👍
Bro we’re very similar. I skated in high school and in my 20s. I powerlifted in my 30s. Now I’m almost 40 and I’m back at skating. I remember bailing on a skateboard as a teen or in my 20s and the next day I was good. Today if I take a fall, I feel it for the next week.
hell yeh , thanks for watching. Agreed, the ground hits a lot harder now
i think that you dont need to start these videos until you are older then the current legend pros - also Olympian mountain biker Tinker Jaurez is still pushing his body to the max at how ever old he is I think 63?
respectfully disagree. Waiting until there is an active issue before implementing strategies to improve your health is not a good approach in my opinion. Also, most skateboarders, like many other people that participate in similar activities, are not among the elite. Elite athletes, although very hard working, most certainly have genetic factors working to their advantage and other circumstances which make it unreasonable to compare yourself to as an average athlete. Being proactive in your earlier years will add more activity in your later years, not to mention quality of life.
@@frontsidehealth even pro atheles cant throw themselves off 10-20' obstacles daily and injurys/don't feel good plays a big part in what you can do on a day to day.
hey brother appreciate the video immensely since I've been lifting way before i got back into skating. one question I have tho is how do u structure your skate and leg days? my current plan is skate on days with no leg days and skate on other days like upper body and non lifting days. Do you skate on legs days or think that's too much exhaustion on the legs?
I try not to skate the day after legs or train legs the day after skating. However, this is much easier said than done as most of the time I'm doing full body workouts. So I might hit legs hard, then skate transition the next day or work on switch manuals for example. I've noticed I can skate certain ways and even if I'm sore, I can still get a session in. It really only impacts my skating if I hit squats/deadlifts at a heavier load, then skate flat the next day or am popping my board a lot. The short answer would be I'm ALWAYS thinking about this and determining what the best thing for my body is each day. hope that helps !
I will be 35 soon. It's crazy learning new tricks that I didn't have 20 years ago. Skating is so much more enjoyable now because there is zero competition. I only skate ledges, flat ground, and mini pipes. Absolutely no jumping down anything.
Yes this shit is awesome. 34, getting back into skating with the same ideals. Only reason I can skate is because I lost 60lbs. Keep spreading it the message. Take care of your body and shred on 🤙🏻
congrats on the weight loss, hell yeh!
Very sensible advice, subbed. I agree you need to approach things a bit more holistically as you age. Just skating isn't enough. You need to do more to keep the hobby enjoyable and not destructive to your body. Maintaining mobility/flexibility I think is just as important as having some extra strength from resistance training. Throw some power yoga into your current routine and I think you'll be good for a long time. Will help reduce injuries and will activate more of the balance sense you need for skating. If you were to go the extra mile, I would say also add brain exercises to help keep your senses strong, like standing on a balance board and playing video games, or playing rhythm games to optimize the mind body reaction time. Gotta keep the brain sharp too, it's also a muscle if you ask me ;P.
Got some serious traction in the comment section! 💪❤️🎉
dude! amazing! how long is each skate session?
Great question, I might make a video on this topic. I try to intentionally limit sessions to two hours unless I bring nutrition to refuel during the session. I'd say they end up being somewhere between 1-2 hours on average.
Thanks! i will be on the look out for more content. 🤘
I feel like there is a lot of us in our late 30s to 40s that have stared skating again after a 20+ year break. I’m very glad I started again about 3 weeks ago
What a nice video! I'm going to share it with my friends ehehe Hug from Portugal!
Neen is my biggest inspiration, both in his philosophy on lifestyle and on skating 🙌
47 years on me and couldn't agree more, 3 sessions a week and maintenance the rest. Bodyweight exercises and skip rope for me is enough for now..
Hell ya man
the recognition of the failure to commit to basic tricks as an indicator of fatigue is brilliant. so many skaters beat themselves up mentally over this and there's more to it then just being scared of landing your tricks.
Great video man, wish this was talked about more
great content man! I skate 2 times a week and workout 5 days a week and i wouldnt have it any other way. If i needed to take a break from either id probably choose to sacrifice one day of work outs for one day of skating for my mental health.
It’s really rough reading the lame excuses here. Y’all need to better males.
