    The biggest game changer for me at 46 is mobility... deep resting squats, hanging, natural movements have helped greatly...

    I skated hard and heavy from '97 to 2002, and then not much after that. Just got back into it. Falling sucks now.

    Man I feel like we’re on the same page. I’m 40 and I’ve been trying to slowly get back some of my harder tricks from my heyday. I lift weights and it has been a game changer for avoiding injury. Definitely slow going but the feeling of doing a 40 year old nollie backside flip or backtail is amazing.

    I’m 36, it’s my muscle tightness that is scary to me. Feels like I need to gain flexibility to avoid at this point an inevitable injury.
    Will get into calisthenics again, but I wear a helmet so not as worried about my dome.
    Good video, thanks for the reminder to work out too.

      dude I know what you mean about the muscle tightness. I think working on mobility (strength + flexibility) is excellent for skaters, especially older ones like us. And that's awesome you're getting into calisthenics again, hell yeh man.

    im 50 and there is nothing wrong with working out and wearing the safety gear. especially hip pads in my case. some of the places i skate (like FDR) its pretty stupid not to wear a helmet. ambulance rides out of there are very common

  • @dank281

    I'm 44 and I wear a helmet if I'm at a park. Maybe I should start wearing one on the street too. Honest question, do you have any aversion to wearing a helmet while street skating/flatland tricks? Do you think there's a stigma?

    • @frontsidehealth

      @@dank281 sure I think if you’re comfortable wearing a helmet all the time , then certainly do it. And I think there is a stigma around helmets, which I think is silly and would not be concerned of this is I was someone that chose to always wear one. Personally, the only reason I don’t all the time is because I learned all of my fundamental tricks while not wearing one so it’s just another thing that I’d rather not think about. I skate with dudes my age that wear one always …perhaps I’ll get there at some point

    • @zonk834

      There shouldn’t be a stigma around wanting to protect your noggin. If you’re skating you should skate for yourself and not be concerned with what other people think because at the end of the day it’s your life.

    I'm dealing with a pretty bad olecronon (elbow) fracture, did surgery and everything. Another good reason to workout is if you get a bad injury you won't be able to workout, so do it while you can.

    • @frontsidehealth

      @@ClydeDonovan-j4y fantastic point! I actually talk about this a lot with the people I work with. People generally get weaker and lose muscle as they age…but a huge part of that is the fact that most people don’t workout. When you check that box you’re immediately at less risk of getting injured and/or getting any of the most common chronic diseases. It’s pretty wild. Extremely powerful habit💪

    what do you think would be a good exercise for improving like your jump height?

    • @frontsidehealth

      Jumping is all about power. Box jumps are a great way to help generate more power (what I personally do). There is also a method called "contrast training" where you pair an exercise like squats with a power exercise like box jumps. You should check out "skate athletics" channel, he's got excellent content on this. Like this one: th-cam.com/video/QTJ7Jsz1dtU/w-d-xo.html

    @Cambist 3

    Feels like the downside of working out upper body when you get older and still skating (if you get imbalances like most guys at the gym do) is you end up top heavy making all of your falls more likely and harder. It's pretty difficult to not get enough weight on your upper body to keep lighter and able to jump as high.

    • @frontsidehealth

      @@Cambist for sure, imbalances are certainly a thing. And just to be clear I wasn’t suggesting to only work upper body. I’m an advocate of working out every major muscle group with balanced training. My point in the video was that even if you are only doing common upper body workouts (which many beginners gravitate towards) it will help you take slams due to an increase is size and strength when compared to someone that does not workout. That being said, there are ways to keep training balanced so that it will almost certainly help your skateboarding and not hurt it in any way

    How do you like the adidas to skate in?

    • @frontsidehealth

      I love the Adidas. I wish core skate brand shoes lasted as long as these. My favorites are the match court RX (wearing in my latest videos)...used to be able to find them on amazon for like 40, but tough to find now. I found a few pairs on postmark. But the Adidas matchbreaks also have the same soles which last a ridiculously long time.

      @@EarlyEscaper I wear it when trying something on bigger transition…and I’ve gone back and forth on just wearing one all the time. Ultimately I find it distracting in general…a lot of skaters that never learned to skate wearing one run into this issue…the short answer is, yes, totally, I strongly advise anyone learning to get comfortable with a helmet early on. That being said, my overall theme of the video is still valid I think: take time to strengthen your body even if you ride fully padded. Freak accidents will happen on and off the board💪
