24.08.11 Catches Are Tough, But Worth It (Three Cheers for Hannes Obreno!)
What I look for and think about when coaching catches. Catches are a very hard thing to master but the payoff in stroke length and, therefore, power in the water is absolutely worth the effort.

    Great info! Thank you! Recently I was watching a video by Edge rowing and Jack was saying that when blades enter the water there is a little pocket of air in front of the air which should disappear before pressure is applied by them. I found this a bit weird and in any case I never heard of this. Have you any idea about this? I ask because of course Obreno would then look like not following this idea and his technique looks pitch perfect in this race especially!

    Twigg went well when her rigs were built for the first instance of the stroke. Asymmetric Blades can be seen hopping prior to catching the water... Consequences continue...... .

    In summary, Damir Martin lost because his boat didn't 'surge' on the recovery during the last stroke. This was because by then he was rowing virtually at backstops (and looking across, first for the finish line, then at Drysdale). If he had taken a full stroke ( like Mahe Drysdale) his boat would have accelerated on the first third of the recovery... and he'd have won.

    But when we look at the Paris Olympics the stroke rate is higher than ever.

    Another excellent analysis. If someone disagrees with you it only indicates their lack of understanding of what a rower needs to do inside and outside the boat to make it go fast and unimpeded.

    This is the second video analysis I've watched from Nico. The first was the finish of the Mens 2016 Olympic single final. My conclusion is that he is a very astute observer and is brave, albeit with humility, to point out mistakes ever the fastest scullers make. Some would say that "It only matters who wins" but that misses the point. Sculling is also an art and the best are not only fast but also artful. Please, please, please keep these videos coming and thank you very much!

    na the force curves are supposed to be different in pairs right like stroke wants to hit the catch hard and bow is supposed to have his curve bugger in the finish?

    • @nicomeklrowing5935
      @nicomeklrowing5935 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am a big proponent of having rowers in a pair (or any boat for that matter) match their strokes. The more I can have a crew, mine or one I coach, have unified or, in the case of a pair, exactly opposing/complimentary forces the better. I do not like having a boat that is "pushed" one way at one point, and another direction at another point. However, there is the issue of "bow pry" insomuch as bow seat will have a leveraged advantage since their oar is closer to the bow and they will then have a greater propensity to turn the boat due to greater leverage. I would simply try to counter that by having the "stronger" rower in stroke seat rather than have the rowers try to differentiate their force curves. That is just me though and, as I say, everyone is allowed their opinion and to row, or coach how they see fit. That is just my opinion, but if I believed something else was correct, I would have a different opinion. :) Appreciate the comment!

    So basically if Damin Martin didn't shorten his stroke and tried to have the same long compression stroke and did the same long strong stokes all the way to the finish he would've won.
