    Hi, could do with your opinion on a section in your video. Doing the West coast cycle trail in March. He takes the first of your gravel sections but could easily take the gravel track that hugs Loch Frisa and do it in the opposite direction to what you did. If you had to do one or the other which would it be?? Many thanks Ed

      @RustyRidesGravel 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh that's tricky! The loch Frisa track is nice for sure but if you don't like being in trees for the whole thing, the other route is what i would suggest. I personally enjoyed the other track more..

    Learning points: talk to the Ranger Service before you go to check the route is accessible to bikes at the time you want to go e.g. bridges open, consitions are ok. If they are closed, ask why e.g bridge maintenance... is their an alternative. Or is the bridge closed to close the route - protect the track from being trashed by bikes during wet conditions. Bikes do considerable damage to trails. A bike drags over 100% of the surface where as feet cause a compression force over approx 1/3rd the trail. Both do more damage in wet conditions, but bikes do considerably more. The Ranger service accept donations to help repair trails. Many also run volunteer path maintenance events.

    • @RustyRidesGravel
      @RustyRidesGravel หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, that's great to hear - you should have a blast there! The pack is an FR Enduro Blackline 16. I bought it for the rigid back support for carrying all the filming kit. It has good space and can take a water pack whilst being fairly light. It isn't waterproof but is definitely rugged enough to handle what I throw at it.

    From that bothy , unless you are crossing Abhainn Rath at Luibeilt to Kinlochleven do not try and bike over and around beyond Meannanach and towards Staoineag to get to the head of Loch Treig.... Did this as a "team building" piece of nonsense with my work in 2019 and it is hike, carry, throw a bike over the ditches and stepping stones from Meannach (we stayed in Staoineag bothy) but not even suitable for MTB (let alone a "gravel" drop bar rigid !), pure riparian bog, knee deep most of the way... I'm wary of any OS tracks that aren't marked as double broken lines these days!!

    The Lomond Hills are deceptive - mere nipples on the skyline when viewed from Edinburgh but fulsome paps when you get close up! You managed more riding than I did on East Lomond, when I carried up pretty much all the way from Falkland (heavy old MTB) - a good workout. If you missed it, the descent of Glen Vale is worth going back for - delightful.

    My respectful contribution would be to suggest you look at the cassette/derailleur of your gravel bike for a lower option. Also that perhaps your mtb is too small. Your knees and wrists align - which suggests you need a 70/80 stem... Good riding!

  • @davidwalsh566
    @davidwalsh566 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice route and great vid Rusty. I wonder whether you find yourself running out of gears on the 1 x Bianchi, at either end. Also, whether the rougher sections would be more comfortable on a hardtail. Of course with a MTB you would sacrifice speed on the flatter sections. Each has its benefits I guess.

    • @RustyRidesGravel
      @RustyRidesGravel 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 1x groupset definitely has limitations on some of the steeper sections in Scotland for sure - especially when the bike is loaded up! The top end speed isn't really an issue as I don't tend to bomb around that much. It's definitely less cut and dry between what is a gravel bike trail and what is hardtail in Scotland. Usually the route needs both bikes at some point...

    Unnecessary facts are a welcome feature - I like the nuggets of history, geography etc. as they provide an extra layer of interest. Cycling videos that focus only on the route, terrain, kit, distance etc. can become a bit dull after a while. Putting the route into a wider context allows you to differentiate your channel from the 'pure' cycling fodder, of which there is ample on YT. Enjoyed the video and will give the route a go; thanks for sharing.

    Some pretty remote and rugged country there, some of it more suited to a mountain bike as others have said. This vid shows the limitations of a gravel bike on more broken terrain. If you are into geology you'd enjoy the Berwickshire Coastal Path - it runs close to Hutton's Unconformity near Cockburnspath.
