MST3K - The Painted Hills
Season 5 Episode 10
(Short: Body Care and Grooming) A Lassie movie, set in 1870s California amongst rival gold miners. The 1950s-era short addresses a perceived deficiency in college-student hygiene.
I do not own the rights to this show or the movie included in the show. The rights all belong respectively to Shout Factory, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Joel Hodgson, True Boardman, and Alexander Hull.

I couldn't find any skidmarks here...strange.
51:41 *sniff sniff* Bacon and snausage omelet, what the? Tom you're killing me 😂
Don't trust people. They will only hurt you. I know that all too well Joel.
..Edison invented the pornograph..
"you know, people were whiter back then..."
Socks? The human race is going to be trampled out of existence by foot fetishists. Yes, I'm looking at you, bucko. Socks!
Lassie and Charles Bronson star in " Kill boy, kill". Shep did have the moral high ground though.
Now let me tell you the real value of a penny.
Frontier Veterinarian!
Man, they're really touching my childhood in this episode. Divinity candy, which my mom made every Christmas, and Lilt perms, which my mom gave my grandma once a month (it stunk to high heaven). Thanks for the memories I'd forgotten.
the permanent or your grandma?
the short was created by a serial killer, I just know it.
Can we take a second to appreciate, "That must be Regional Velvet?"
"you can't flash back to something that never happened, that's not fair"
Shame shame shame. Oh for shame. You are not acceptable the way you are. Nobody likes you. Pull up your socks!
"What is Rutherford B. Hayes doing in this movie?" "Rutherford B. Hayes strikes it rich!"
33:40 reminds me of Drakengard 1 Chapter 5 ground - part 2
19:03 I really like the old time 'clementine' song being played here. Better than any other version I can find here on youtube imo
Hey hey
Joel did a lot better than Mike or the new guy now.
"I'm late for my Hitler youth meeting..."
Hygiene 💩
I guess this is the family-friendly version of Treasure of he Sierra Madre.
Love the "Warriors" reference 54:25: "Oh, Lassie, come out and play-ay".
The 'montage' kills me every time!
This is a severely underrated episode
can't believe crow did a jay leno impression without a SINGLE michael jackson joke
1:14:47 >:3
14:55 wish my hair could do that 😭
"He had sand on his lap and he needed help?" Crow took the words outta my mouth.
33:59 "The world is dying."
Best part 1:02:13
This movie is depressing as hell.
Yes! I could only tolerate about 45 minutes.
Don't die until you tell them where you hid the gold! (I sound like my granddaughter who as a little-bitty girl saw Titanic at the theater, and knowing nothing about the movie except what she saw herself, cried out, "Oh no DON'T throw the necklace in the water!")
They're killing me with the snausage stuff.
I prefer "Gypsy Classic."
Defibulator? You're a doctor for god's sake!
Apparently not that kind of a doctor.
"You don't seem to be the type to make this guy behave like a human being." What the holy hell does that even mean?!
It's about as bad as you think.
La la la
OOH...if, even for a couple minutes, at 53:54, when that piece of shit Frank, the shit who killed Jonathan cuz he wants all that gold for himself & then throws a rock at Shep, who then attacks Frank & though he knocks him down & bites him, it's at that moment when I wish Shep had been a big, 200 lb. masriff, i.e. a hound of hell, then Shep, the killer, Frank, getting viciously, mercilessly attacked by "Lassie-as-a-Mastiff", wouldn't have gotten up again (Frank, I mean) at least not with a face or a neck!!. But, I suppose that's a normal, healthy and cathartic wish to have at moments like these. But at least Shep, being such a loyal, persistent & smart dog gets the last laugh as Frank gets his just deserts!! Ha ha ha!!
K
he looked great bouncing down that bluff.
I actually wanted to bad guy to get away with it at the end because of how the movie was written. The kid was so stupid and irritating. He had no reason to not believe his story, neither did the magic dog. That him saying that Johnathan never found paydirt is what made dumbass Tommy throw a shitfit and accuse him of murder was so stupid. Of course you don't tell everyone you struck gold stupid! I even looked at him like a hysterical kid and I knew what happened! They made the villain out to be a decent and good guy who was blinded by greed. He was written like he was still going to take care of Tommy and his mother with all the money, and probably would've been remorseful his whole life for killing Johnathan... but that's clearly not what they intended for the audience to feel, it is how it came across however. Well... there's a reason why it's on MST3K.
still a bad guy for the killing, he just had some good intentions.
"What did we build again Steve?" "What is it we're doing again?"
Thanks for bringing back the Painted Hills. I remember it was taken down due to some dubious "copyright ciaim" ... Greedy bastards! Ugh! Besides, there are other ways for one to view this episode elsewhere. Anyway, great to see it back!
The copyright was because of Lassie. Weatherwax' grandkids made them pull this.
Keep circulating the tapes. The medium may change but the mission never does.
Love the Tom Bom-ba-dil reference!
Lassie as Shep, revealing her range as an actress.
sampo! snausage!
For the last 20 years every time we have a storm I say "I hope this montage blows over". No one gets it.
"Oh, brother." "...the hell?" The only appropriate response.
"...you don't seem to be exactly the type to make this guy behave like a human being." I never knew boring old 50s narrators could be so savage.
Wow. There was a short about body shaming.
weekendmom it was about personal hygiene not body shaming
Wheelie Kings precisely. But yet again in this short, the inner liberal/feminist in the crew showed itself. Apparently it is sexist to appreciate a person with good hygiene? Apparently it is horrible to have white actors and actresses? I think if anything this short shows the age old attempt by women to look like teenagers. That is a dumb thing to praise if you ask me. Ruining your face just to fool guys into thinking you are still young 😂😂 Then our society brainwashes us into thinking "the older the better, the younger the worse" Ohhhh modern society I love you so much 🤗
The narrator was just a plain old fashioned shithead.
darthclide uhm.. who mentioned a problem with white actresses? lmao... also it's common in our society that youth is praised over aging if you've ever watched a commercial, a tv show, movie, read a magazine, listened to a song, or just engaged with media in general outside of leaving woefully idiotic replies on mts3k youtube vids..
10:12 "It's being snowy white!" I consider myself pretty liberal and even I get annoyed at their constant exclamations about how the past had different attitudes to race and gender.
Loved this one!! The MST3k guys are hilarious doing the Shep dog-sounds. This one really cheered me up!
Lassie doing the Curly Howard "woo woo" vocalizations at 58:02. LOL
I dunno about you guys, but I preferred the girl from the short BEFORE they "fixed" her.
I was looking for this comment.
So did Crow!
I like the " what dorm did I wake up in?" Look easy
I agree.
In those days that was called "frumpy."
