Thank you for this, most compelling.
The distress hidden in his earliest fiction books breaks heart. Later he was corrupted to do the kind of writing he did. He was unhappy for his writing then was far bad than when he began. It reflects in the supressed rage spilling out of his work. The wonder and mystery in spite of everything earlier brings joy to a reader.
A lovely interview. I remember seeing Gideon Hanumansingh reading the nightly news when I teenager. Really enjoyed listening to Wendell Manwaring, he's a genius in his own rights....💌
Like me you do not judge that is not for you. I keep the work and personal life separate in all aspect of like.
I love him and his writing, I love Miguel street . Him Michael Anthony were my solitude in my teens when I read alot.
Thank you for this insightful video. This was of great help. You've heaped all the phases of Naipaul's life, from the confined childhood to the Nobel Laureate. The voice traversing the whole video managed to keep our attention till the last minute. I hope more people get to watch this and of course, that would certainly be followed by a token of appreciation. 👏👏
I didnt like the second wife..And Naipaul was not kind to his first one
I too had the same feeling about his 2nd wife, I don't want to be judgemental buy seems that she was either overprotective of Sir Naipaul or she overdid her display of fondness for the old Naipaul.
He even resembles Conrad, and curiously both had nervous breakdowns over financial losses as young men.
One of the better interviews on Naipaul! Thank you Wendell Manwarren and Gideon Hanoomansingh.
It's a lovely video. I always felt he had disdain for India but actually he felt intense love as he put himself in the shoes of the multitude and felt compassion for them. As a sensitive writer he was appalled at the idea but kept getting drawn to India as is mentioned in his speech after receiving the Nobel. The other person one has lot of regard is Pat and her loyalty.
Pretty great documentary.
Lovely building and well manicured lawn and garden. Naipaul has talked several times about living in this building, very cold in winter, and longing to live in a warm place. But the irony is that he chose to write and live in a small English village that was even colder than London, when he could have very easily afforded to move to a well insulated, much warmer place. He was a brilliant writer with an acerbic tongue. No oxford educated British gentleman had command over the English language that Sir V S Naipaul did. Many gripping passages from his brilliant novel, A Bend in the river, which I read more than forty years ago, still ring in my mind, after all these years. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania
A person from nowhere to somewhere who rosed exponentially to become a Noble prize winner by his writings on litterateur
he moved out the country so no one could hear him bate the wife
Adam Low’s documentaries are always magnificent.

Does anyone know the music (Shahnai) that plays in the background or in the end credits?

Whoo, boy, can you imagine his reaction to current events? Look, study, write. Repeat.......
It took modi to finally launch a national campaign to provide a toilet for every poor family
"the explanation is the work itself."
Sir Vidia was a philosopher of writing, not in the literary sense of the word, but in the way he could see things vividly, see through them the underlying truth that does not occur to people at large. The way he writes, his prose, his vivid descriptions of people and their mannerisms, the intricate details of the bounties of nature, the observations make for you a textual documentary to know about the world for yourself, even though you are seeing things through his eyes. When I read his work, I feel he is a photo-camera equivalent in his pen. His mind sees and records everything in tiny details, and so accurately. This god of writing leaves things as they are, in the end leaving it up to you to judge. Unless you are not biased or heavily conditioned, you must know what you should know. This documentary is great. The only thing one missed it should have incorporated the mind of the great author as well, the making of it, as explained by the author himself in his book, 'Literary occasions'.
Rubbish. Naipaul only saw what was in front of him. As if what was in front of him was not the result of distinct historical experiences. Great writer no doubt. But that is it. He writes nice books, not very analytical books 😂
@@juanestadian8471 writing about what is in front of one in non- fiction is a true art and needs a man of caliber to do it. Doing analysis of it is the business of critics, who differ from each other. In Naipaul’s writings, mere real time observations matter, devoid of opinions and bias. The lacking is what is its true jewels
Thank you so much for posting this 💗
