Neither religion or the theory of evolution have the answers we seek. The missing link is still missing as is the presence of the gods of religions. Surely being open minded and humble enough to admit we have much to learn about the universe and life would be a better approach.

I watched this interview a long time ago in my angry atheist phase. I hated every word this Rabbi spoke. But coming back to this video as an adult (and new Muslim), I must say that I judged this Rabbi unfairly. He is a very thoughtful man regardless of his beliefs. If you only see someone for their beliefs, you'll cut yourself off from the wisdom that they have.

No religious fundamentalist will accept teaching children all religious traditions ever. It would mean that instead of being taught what to think the children would have to be taught how to think critically. Critical thinking is the anathema of fundamentalism. If every religious tradition had done this then religion would have disappeared long,long ago.

Dawkins’ notion that there can be a such thing as a ‘neutral’ or ‘secular’ education for children is shortsighted. Even so-called neutral secular education is religious in its own way, because it claims a certain view of reality and a certain system of morality; indeed it is the biggest pseudo-religion, because by claiming to sidestep all religious questions it invents a new one in disguise, which Dawkins’ views are a product of.

Great discussion. I’ve watched it many times, both of them are highly intelligent and have great points. I’m especially impressed by the rabbi’s points about the atrocities of the anti-religious (nazis, communists). Also Dawkins’ point about the age of the world seems very incompatible with the jewish perspective. Great video.

I would love for Dawkins to talk with Dr. Gerald Shroeder, or Rabbi Gotlieb, as both of these people are much more academically inclined. One is an orthodox Jewish physicist who has written many books on science and Torah, and how it fits together Rabbi Gotlieb is a young earth creationist who was a professor at John’s Hopkins and (in my opinion), a pretty good philosopher, who has written books about evidence for Torah being from God and things like that.

The bible is quite consistent with a world that God created millions if not billions of years ago. Genesis is quite suggestive that there were creations of this world before this current creation that He made 5768 years ago. The trouble is that Mr Dawkins is quite inflexible in his thinking. for him the big bang is year zero but he is unable to explain what there was before the big bang. Any scientific ideas about pre big bang existence is just so much navel gazing. The sin in the garden was sex by the way chaps. Adam gave pre 70AD humanity a corrupt seed. Jesus Abraham was the first generation of Israel and Jesus was the last generation. Jesus prophecized about nothing other than the destruction of the temple then standing and unbelieving Israel. Those events happened in 70AD there is no scientific doubt about that. Sin ended then. Good and evil and judgement still exist because God created them. The germans were proponents of Darwinism and the Nazi state was athiest and that is the problem if you have no moral absolutes because you end up depending on man and man has a history of 5700 years of being untrustworthy

I'm ex chabad. Rabbi Gluck seems like a nice guy, but many of the things he says about chabad practices and norms are just not true. Rabbis always like to make chabad seem a lot more open minded than it really is

Let's be clear...science has not proven evolution nor has it disproven the existence of a God...in fact the most prolific intelectual non-believers agree that a God is the more likely cause of the existence of the world and life. Dawkins is making a lot of money from misleading the sheep......just because a person chooses not to believe in a God does not mean he will not be waiting on the last day to hold you to account for your actions. We make people like Dawkins into our false Gods and seek refuge there......oh dear.

People can believe anything they want and not cause any problems. Unfortunately, beliefs got interjected into physics and astrophysics. This is because of the big bang theory and its insistence to state that the universe was "born" 13.8 billion years ago. The fact that this scenario decimates the first and second laws of thermodynamics is completely ignored. Newtons third law is ignored as well because a universe can't expand to the point of acceleration without any explanation as to how it happens. Edwin Hubble discovered the galaxies expanding, not the universe. He never accepted the theory out forth by Father Georges Lamaitre and for good reason. Science doesn't understand our universe at all.

Respect to the Rabbi and Mr. Dawkins. The argument that no scientist can tell you when the Big Bang occurred; therefore he's right about 6,000 years ago the earth was formed is not in "good faith" if I may say so. Even scientists being a half percent off from one another is a rounding error, but 5,760 (?) years ago is now earth genesis "gospel?" (Sorry, had to do it.) It's like saying you're not sure if you're 98 or 99 years old, so you are definitely sure you are 2 years old.

I imagine Dawkins' gentle approach leaving an imprint in the mind of the people he argues with. Rabbi Gluck seems a very nice person as well. For most educated Westerners, science is commonsense, but this is not so in cultures where indoctrination is very hard to undo - and if you do, you may be at risk of being outcast. The Rabbi does not get that science is a method rather than a belief. It is obvious he doesn't deal with scientific concepts like 'margins of error' etc - his world is one of certainties. Maybe it's useless to try to convince Gluck of 'facts' using scientific lingo as that seems far from Gluck's idea of truth as god's word. We need to understand each person's playing field and establish what we have in common, before discussion can have any impact.

Once indoctrinated with poor quality fairy tales about an imaginary bloodthirsty sky daddy, it serves as a self-sustaining ideology which is very difficult to get rid off. I feeling sorry for the children..

When a leader gives us directions and we see ourselves falling into an abyss, we might decide he or she is not the one for us and for that purpose we have been given at birth a capacity of choice, growing into an ability to express ourselves! We have in the world today such a person who claims 'follow science' and clearly this is aiming at disaster. His teaching has been just that, teaching us all what to avoid: looking back at History it is prioritising ownership on theories, including mostly technology recently, that has driven tribes and Nations against each other. Us being good and the others being bad, which can change given time, has been just a channel used to let the extended innerchild explode! Religions meant to aim at Peace have often backed up warriors going to evil warfare and did not promote or seek a genuine Human Spirit using wisdom mentioned by wise Masters for centuries: instead submission to crime has been seen as God's answer to violence ignoring the freedom of choice given to us at birth! Going from micro to macro gives strength and value to an individual which should lift Humanity from the bottom up rather than exclusively from Political or Religious rulers.

Religious Freaks will say anything to get what they want...... Even find reason to kill or ethnic cleansing as Israelis do each day. You can't argue with these people...... Its pointless 🤔

So the summary of the rabbi's best arguments are that science isn't 100% correct and therefore the religious answer stands. That really shows the awful point, religion offers 'the answer', science finds 'an answer' and if a better or improved one comes along, supported by better evidence, it changes to that.

It doesn't matter if people believed the sun goes round or the earth goes round or if the world was created yesterday.. what is more important is to: love for others what you love for yourself... I wish people concentrate on this and forget about the rest as they don't effect peoples life one way or the other.
