G’Day Tim here! I’ll be working on a host of projects, mostly surrounding metal work, blacksmithing, fabrication with a focus on hilt smithing.
I make practical pieces for use in HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). While I have very little experience at the time of writing this, I hope my videos will help someone out there who is struggling with a project they are working on.
I hope you’ll join my on my journey from complete novice to wherever we end up together!

Beginner Blacksmith Forging a Smallsword: Part 2
The Dream is still alive! The sword is going to be a beautiful blend of steel, brass, copper and Australian native hardwood, in the shape of a 1700s era smallsword, made in what I'm hoping will be my signature style.
We managed to forge the Main piece of the sword guard. This includes the knuckle bow, quillon, and pas-d'an. We also finished the quillon block by adding the aforementioned signature brass triangular piece.
There is a lot of work still left to do, but we have one of the hardest jobs in the rear mirror now and I am excited to get to the next part!!

Novice Forges a Small Sword: Part 1
มุมมอง 178หลายเดือนก่อน
I have been inventing my own style of smallsword, and I'm back at my local blacksmiths workshop to perfect it! The Design, to my knowledge, is completely unique to me. If you have seen a smallsword built in the same way before please do let me know. If you can even show someone who is knowledgeable in swords I'd appreciate that too. Just keen to see if anyone else has done it before. The basic ...

A blade, forged in the fires of... Sydney's Inner West gets its first taste of battle. I have a long way to go in my metal work and my fencing, but it is so satisfying to get to use a sword I made myself! On top of that it was great seeing the upgrades I made have an immediate impact on performance. Whether you like it or not there will be more of these HEMA focused videos in the future so subs...
Forging a Better Side Sword
มุมมอง 1.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Wow, I did not expect my first complex sword hilt to go so well! One step away from a rapier and some really fancy blades! Dropped by the workshop and slapped some steel on the anvil, Made the parts needed for a basic side sword hilt, and welded it all together. I am genuinely so happy with the outcome! It has me feeling so ready for some very ambitious builds in the future!
My First Side Sword Build Didn't Go To Plan.
มุมมอง 664 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had to screw up eventually! Making side sword out of two old longswords and a new blade should have been easy, but I bought the wrong blade. The tang on my new weapon is only about 4 inches long which is not enough space for my hand let alone a glove. However all is not doom and gloom! we had a lot of fun putting this test piece together and I have some great Ideas for the next steps. Follow ...
I Forged a Basket Hilted Broadsword!

Fully Forged and Ready for Combat! The hammers are silent. The Files are down. And the hands worn and with a minor infected cut on the middle finger. The last two months have seen me working my ass off metal working, blacksmithing, wood working and pulling out splinters, and I have my first sword on this channel completed! The basket hilted broadsword was something I had wanted to do for ages a...
A New Journey: Blacksmithing a Broad Sword!! (Part 1)
มุมมอง 576 หลายเดือนก่อน
Lets Goooo!! My blacksmithing journey begins! Over the last few weeks the Mark 1 broadsword has started to take shape. The goal of this project is to fabricate a basket hilted broadsword, that is able to be used safely in a HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) setting. Inspired by real Scottish and English style weapons. I want to make a piece that I am proud of while also understanding that...

New channel, who's this? This video marks the revival of this channel. We are going to start out by focusing on fabricating swords, side arms and some other related paraphernalia. I am currently working on a number of projects at the same time but will release each as its own video or series, depending on how long they take to complete. The bulk of the projects are going to be based around HEMA...
lovely! I suggest some nicer screws.
What did you have in mind?
@@TimGoodeMetalworkshmm, I'd say something slotted at least. Slots aligned for a clean look. Then I'd either countersink (deeper) or take roundhead screws. Brass might be nice - or something black.
@ I did go with brass electroplating but I totally get what you mean! Thank you for the tips, you’ll see them implemented next time!
What a great Christmas present. Can’t wait to see what you make next!
Thank you!
Love the design!!
Thank you! I kinda made it up as I went along if I’m honest
@TimGoodeMetalworks creative problem solving through the applied force ;)
where do you get your metal from?
Depends but to start I’m a shameless scrap goblin. I’ll hoard random bits I find in the gutter and use them for something. This smallsword is like 80% scrap from the wood in the handle to piece I forged to make the quillon block. If I need specific shapes (sheet is hard to find in the wild) or metals I’ll buy it. Depending where you live there are a few options 1: online has heaps of options but it hard to get a feel for the size you need when you’re starting because you don’t just know how big 6mm square bar feels in the hand. Knife making sites are a good start 2. Your local big hardware store will have some great starting stuff, it should have mild sheet flat bar, square and round bar. Just make sure you’re not buying Galv or you might gas yourself when you heat it 3. When there is something super specific I need I start ringing up local industry suppliers and asking what their minimum cuts are. Usually you’ll find one that is happy to do whatever you need 4. for really really specific stuff like wire or or non-ferrous stuff, Jewellery supply stores are pretty decent but a bit exy.
not only is this a really stunning piece, it is really encouraging to see you do it this way. I really want to try forging my own sword guard.
It’s a pretty big time and money investment but most hobbies these days are and It’s really rewarding. Every time I finish a project I realise I could do the previous one even better, which I guess is what this project is!
This is awesome, so seldom do you see an amateur (no disrespect intended) try to make a small sword, usually its people with big expensive workshops. A bit of advice from another hobbyist. The blank you prepared at 2:29, you cut away shoulders for the neck of the guard, then forged both finger rings and the quillion and knuckle bow from the same side. It might be easier to forge the finger rings using the bits that you removed to make the neck instead of trying to forge everything from the other side, it would leave more meat at the joint that you were having cracking and cold shut problems at.
None taken! I do have access to a big expensive workshop, but I’m not quite allowed to use all the tools there since I am an Amateur. Oh wow that is such a good idea! I’ll definitely be doing this build again after I’m a little less amateur and that is something I will absolutely be trying!
wow looks great! cant wait to see part 3
Thank you! Glad to have you here!

There is also a Scottish baskethilt known as a break or beaknose baskethilt doesn't have the blade loops does have a pointer bit.
@@PandaKnight52 Gave it a google and oh wow those are some of the nicest baskets hilts I’ve ever seen. I’ll try digging up some more info on them because I’d love to try a more faithful rendition next time around
Where did you get the blades from ?
I’ve replied to the message on the other video!
@GooTimo yeah just thought I would also help the algorithm on these videos too :)
I am in Sydney to! How much would you charge for making another sparring broadsword ?
Thanks for the message! I haven’t even thought about selling stuff yet but I could look into it! If you are in Sydney you could take a look at the one I made myself as a starting point? I saw your other message, at the moment my blades are all Darkwood armoury blades, but I have been told armour-class blades are also good. If you got any questions give us a shout! Ps. Do you train with any Sydney groups?
I am also currently working on the RnD for blade production, but I am just in the early stages at the moment. That’ll be a video at some point
@GooTimo I run GLECA Sydney :) so yes. I have been looking into how to get a basket hilt waterjet cut and then formed without welding has I don't have those tools. Happy to discuss more in via dm but would love to help with filming some of your video content for you ( I am a freelance Videographer )
@ oh wow that’ll do it. I’d be keen to have a spar at some point but I will say I’m very much learning! I tried to come up with one that doesn’t need welding or some proper tools and I couldn’t come up with one (I am a massive rookie though). Back in the day they would have all been forge welded together. Best I have thought of is using bolts and Rivets but that either has the risk of coming apart or requires blow torches and a bit of skill. I’d be keen for some filming but I am skint and couldn’t offer any money. I will say 90% of the work is really boring though
@GooTimo bartering and trade is good for me. And the great thing about boring subject matter is how creative you can get with the b-roll shots
