Like always, thank you for viewing and supporting my channel. You don't know what it means to me that you are viewing my material. Please let me know what you think of this video and how I can improve it. Furthermore, if you see anything wrong in the video please be gentle in pointing it out.
Turns out I finished rebuilding the engine before finishing editing the videos. I decided to upload the final video first and then (maybe) upload the three in-between videos. I was going to create a separate channel that only talks about the electrical aspects of the MerCruiser 3.0 Liter engine however in all honesty the response from the mechanical aspect of the engine (this channel) has been less than stellar. Very few subscribers and not a single question has made me decide to maybe abandon this channel. Only time will tell.
P.S. Engine came out flawless. Not only does the engine sound good but it runs good. Unfortunately, turns out the carburetor had issues. If I get enough subscribers, then I will create a sperate cannel that will cover not only carburetor rebuilt procedure but also carburetor theory. Again, only time will tell.

    yeah, those are called freeze plugs and their purpose is if water freezes in the block it'll burst those out before it cracks the block. That's all nothing is going to prevent water from freezing knucklehead.

      I know you are trying to tell me something, I just don't know what that is? Are you quoting me? I know freeze plugs are actually holes made for removing sand for when the engines are being made. Afterwards, the freeze plugs are repurposed for trying to prevent cracking of block if in case the water isn't removed and temperatures drop below freezing. I know some people question whether they work as freeze plugs. In my opinion they do work and do sometimes do save the engine from damage. In a normal car engine, the engine has antifreeze which is meant to stop the water from freezing. I one time did this experiment with two glass cups. In one cup, I put water and the other I put antifreeze. Next, I place both cups in the freezer. After one day, the cup filled with antifreeze did not freeze. Conversely, the other cup with pure water, the water became ice and cracked the glass cup.

      Wait a minute. You actually have the car version of the engine. You are not here asking about the MerCruiser 3.0 boat engine. You are here seeking information on the Super-Thrift 153. How cool. Can you do me a favor? Can you make a small video and uploaded and send me the link? I have not actually seen the 153/151 version. I have seen some on TH-cam but I would like to see it more in-depth.       I've checked that link. Good info there, I never knew they made the 153 in Mexico as well. Yes you are right im looking for info regarding the differences between these engines, as here in UK there is nothing to buy for the 153 apart from the marine version, so most parts I have to order from Brazil. The 151 was made by the hundreds of thousands in Brazil, you can find it everywhere and anywhere. I will make a video and send to you but will be in 4-6 weeks times as I'm re-wiring the Opala right now, and the engine is buried in the shed, meanwhile I will check your other videos out as you have great tips there for sure

    Good video bro! I just ordered a reman 3.0L it has a different style head than what i pulled out of the boat. The ports look similar to the one you have but this head has what looks to be injector holes with plugs in them. The exhaust manifold that i have doesnt even come close to lining up with the ports on this new reman head. Idk what to do. I know they make manifold adapters but not sure if itll work for my unique situation. The adapters im looking at dont look right to me. If you have any insight at all abd maybe want to take a peak at pictures of what i have to work with that would be awesome.

      A little explanation. The MerCruiser 3.0 engine is not designed by the boat manufacturers (designing a gasoline engine is far to expensive, complex for boat manufacturers). The MerCruiser 3.0 engine is/was designed by General Motors. Several companies purchase these engine from GM, and put them in their products. Prime examples include forklifts, generators and yes even marine. Two marine companies come in mind when I think of MerCruiser 3.0 (Volvo Penta and Bayliner). Although the engines are fundamentally, the same, they do differ just enough that exchanging them gets a little messy. If I were you, I would not mix and match parts. That is just a nightmare.     Great video.....I am reassembling this engine for a friend. Quick question....over by the starter, I have a cluster of wires that come out of the harness with the starter wires and the oil pressure wire. There are 3 wires that come together in a clip that fits on another sensor? I have a t connector that is on the engine at that location, but I can't fit both sensors on it? Any ideas? Could the blue wire have been replaced and is now redundant?

      If by refrigeration cycle you mean how the boat coals the water? Then yes, I have explained that already in another video. Boats don't have radiators. Basically, they just get fresh water and expel the hot water to the lake.

    Hey Jose, I really appreciate your videos. Where is a good source for a master rebuild kit? I have a 1975 Mercruiser 3.0 Also, do you wait to order the kit once it's fully disassembled so that you can measure the pistons and bore, or do they come separately from the kit? Or would it make more sense to order the parts individually instead of a kit?

    Thank Jose for your video. So after taking all the valve lash out, you also tighten it further by 270 degrees? I always thought valve lash was necessary, but you mentioned that you only do that with solid ones. Are these lifters hydraulic, so there is springiness to them? I've had trouble finding a rebuild manual that I can follow. Do you know where I could download one?

    Your theory about why everything is cast was pretty accurate, but I'll explain a little more. When you put two different metals together you create galvanic corrosion. It's the same way a battery works. An inert gasket separating them helps keep the corrosion down, but the water acts as an electrolyte which allows them to react together. Especially if you don't drain the water from them for winterizing. In more extreme environments like salt water boats actually use sacrificial zinc anodes which allows the salt water to attack the zinc, which protects the other less reactive metals from corrosion. They also did it for ease of manufacturing, because casting everything from one metal doesn't require different processes and materials. When a factory makes something, eliminating extra processes makes it less expensive because it takes less tools and dedicated space and machines to make the final product.

    I have a small water leak that is coming from behind my manifold. I have to remove it to further exam the exact source. Do I have to remove linkages and stuff or just undo the carb lines and the 5 bolts in the manifold?

    Just put my 3.0 back together and I can’t even turn turn it manually to adjust valves. Any idea what im doing wrong?

      Hello 3rdEye_FPV. In all honesty it can be a lot of things. You cannot just take apart an engine and put it back together. When you put it back together you have to follow the same steps as if you are rebuilding the engine. After rebuilding several engines you get a feel for how it behaves during he rebuild process. For instance when you place the crankshaft with the shell bearings, you should be able to rotate the crankshaft rather easily. Furthermore, every time you add a piston, the rotating resistance should be felt. I guarantee you if you see all my videos, you will detect where you went wrong.

      @@boatFixerUpper thanks for the reply! Thankfully i was able to figure it out. Turned out I had one of the bearing out on the wrong way and it was affecting the rotation of the shaft. Got that figured out and got everything else out back together per the OEM Manual and she’s been running like a beauty since. In your videos you mention how important the rear seal is but it would have been wise to mention that the front seal is equally just as important and is usually the one to leak first in most cases (imo) anyhow , big thanks for providing helpful content. You did an awesome job bud!!

    Just took mine off and cleaned the gasket and paint off the mounting surface. I used a good quality straight edge to check for flatness and from side to side, it's good but lengthwise, I can see a little light under the straightedge which makes me think it has a small dip in the middle. Is this okay or should I buy a new manifold? It's a Barr and only about three years old.

    Muy grafico el video pero muy confuso cuando empiezas a ajustar hablas del piston 1 y terminas ajustando el 4 y no aclaras si ademas de debe estar en pms donde pones la marca de la polea, al final no se entiende si vas a usar el orden de encendido como es con tanta pestaña en rojo

Para decirte la verda, tuve que volver a ver el video varias veces para entender a que te referias cuando dices “empiezas a ajustar hablas del piston 1 y terminas ajustando el 4 ”. Despues de ver el comienso del video varias veces entendi la confucion. Cuando empieso hablando de piston numero 1 estoy hablando del “firing order” y no en que orden vamos a ajustar las valvulas. Pero la verdad es que si pude ver empesado hablando de como ajustar piston numero 1. PERO… Cuando yo crei el video, yo quise explicar porque se hasen las cosas como se hacen y no nomas decirles a ustedes unos passos. En mi opinion es mejor saber porque estas haciendo lo que estas haciendo y no nomas hacerlo. En mi opinion, eso es medio peligroso por que pasa si se te olvida un paso? Nose si eso tenga sentido?     Looking at your video again I have to remind myself to position my block on the stand to where I can access the crank in order to install the seal housing easier. My crank (Volvo Penta) has the studs installed for the Coupler/Flywheel. I have a feeling that I will need to remove those studs (if the machine shop doesn't) in order to install the seal/housing.       Phil, I am so glad you are still working on your engine and that you are essentially giving us a status update. It sounds like you have removed the engine from the boat? If so, it shouldn't be too hard to remove the studs and if you cannot, then yes the machine shop should be able to remove them. Keep us posted.

      Carlos, Would you be surprised if I tell you I don't charge to rebuild an engine. Unfortunately, I only do this as a hobby and I only do this for family and friends. I have rebuilt several engines, automatic transmissions and manual transmission however I never charge. I made a promise to myself that I would never do this as a profession. Thanks in advance.

    The book calls for a tool (J-35621) which is about $180 for installing the rear main seal in the housing. It seems they want you to do it by pressing it on after the housing is mounted. Did you just press it in the housing with a piece of wood or something first? Thanks

      Phil. Thank you for seeing my videos. You don't know how it makes me feel. Hopefully, this answers your question. Also as far as purchasing the tool, my answer is it is a personal choice. This is a very specific tool and you only have one use for it and that is installing rear-main seals. How many engines do you plan on rebuilding? If you are only going to rebuild this engine(?), then maybe you can forgo buying the tool. Furthermore, if you are strap for cash (like I am), then maybe you can forgo buying the tool. The whole point of my videos is how to rebuild the engine on a budget. In my opinion the tool not essential. Don't get me wrong, the tool will make you suffer less and guarantee the correct seal install however, the seal is not hard to install (if the housing is ouside the engine) and it is very hard to get the seal/housing install wrong. I thnk maybe what I should have asked you is do you plan on rebuilding the engine or do you just want to replace the rear-main seal? If you plan on completely rebuilding the engine then forgo buying the tool as you will have to completely disassemble the engine and that includes removing the housing from the engine. Having the housing in the bench, it is much easier not only to remove the seal but also install it. Conversely, if you have a leaking rear-main oil seal and are planning on just replacing the seal, then purchase the tool. That said in all honestly, most people just gently hammer the seal in. I definitely don't hammer it in. Furthermore, I did not have any problems installing it. To be honest I just put some gasket maker and pushed it in with my thumb. I did not even have to hammer it in. The gasket maker provided a lubrication effect and so it made it easy to install. Also, I would definitely suggest you put the seal on the housing prior to installing the housing/seal in the engine. Installing the housing/gasket together slightly helps with the alignment. Again it is a personal choice. Let me know how it goes. I an intrigued to hear how it went.

    I didn't catch what the original problem was with the engine. Just noticed that when you tore it down it looked pretty clean. Where you just tearing it down a second time to make the video?

      Head gasket was bad, engine burned oil and low oil pressure. It was just time to rebuild it. Sometimes, we had to do a retake because turns out we were not recording or we forgot to mention something. I would say the answer is both.

    Thanks for the video! I am about to start tearing down my 2006 Volvo Penta 3.0L (which is basically the same engine). It spun the #4 bearing and I will do some videos on how it goes. Normally, I do kayak fishing videos but I ended up with this boat that has turned into a major project.. jajajajaa Gracias!

    This is awesome. I have a 3.0 with 0 compression on cylinder #2. Hoping it is just a valve issue and not requiring a full rebuild.
