Please don’t put a wood bed. These busses are extremely rare and customizing it with wood will devalue the bus. Keep it simple and replace with stock metal bed. I wouldn’t even paint it once you’re done.
You have a very beautiful daughter
You guys are awesome, I almost cut my hood open until I found your video! Thanks a lot!
Keep at it! Don't forget your tetanus shots 😉. Finishing up my '58 bus, and helping a friend on his '63 single cab. Thank You for the video!
Well done! Definitely not a project for the faint hearted. Keep it up! ✌🏻
Great stuff guys, keep at it👍🏽 it might end up looking like mine soon 😉
I like your enthusiasm restoring this rusted pickup. All theese old cars need to be restored because the new ones are mostly rubbish (my daily driver is a '69 Volvo). This Summer I'm going to excavate a VW bus of the fifties (probably) that is buried for 50+ years. The last time I've seen it was ca.1973 as a child when only the rear of the roof and the back window looked out of the surface. Unfortunately the authoritys seem unreachable to give permission for digging but I keep on trying ! I hope there's something left of it. Perhaps I'm even going to make make a YT Video of that adventure. Greetings from Kiel / Germany.
Going to Georgia next weekend to look at my first single cab! Still new to the hobby, but excited. Gonna be a big project (lots of rust too). Concerned about parts, but I guess I'll worry about that after I own it hahaha.
Is that a 911 under the cover?
Nope....just a lowly beetle

patch it but don't expect a full restoration on this. Enjoy it as is, oil the shit out of it.
I too am starting a single cab metal work. If you guys get her done by fall, I will be impressed!!! My gates took me sixty hours alone! CIP has a few available right now, and on sale with free shipping!
I didn’t read all the comments but you said you want to name it. Because of the bottle you found maybe name it brownie! Just a thought. Will be fun tagging along on the build.
Thanks for the suggestion....that's not a bad idea
I tell you who you could go to for some help on that VW TRUCK that is MUSTIE 1 he rebuilt a VW TRUCK like that one or simular to it and did a great job on it too I watched him do it he had to do a lot of patch work on it maybe not as much as that be he did some it looked just like a NEW one when he got thru with it
The @wickedwerks channel is also currently doing a resto on a 63 single cab.
We are following his single cab also.
Fun to watch.
Aren't the drilled out holes now pure metal that let them rust out quickly?
There is that possibility, however when I drill them, with the size bits that I use, it rarely takes all the paint out. If you are worried about that, you can always take some thinned out paint and use a model car brush to coat the inside of the hole. The amount of paint build-up would be minimal. I have never had an issue with rust.
Shewwww that's a rusty single cab I LOVE IT!!!! That Patina is absolutely fantastic!! That front kick plate under the headlights on the interior going across the bottom of the floor you might find some souvenirs behind that! Great project!
I’m having a panic attack imagining this restoration… wheww … I want to follow this job
good to see more vw nutters rebuilding these classics :)
The girls annoying my homie specializes in type 2 volkswagen restoration seen the rarest volkswagens at his shop when I fixed my engine on my slip window
fantastic
Call it IRON ORE.
Had a 64,66, and a 67. The 67 got painted and reupholstered over 30 years ago. 67 had a large back window. In those days a you could buy one for a few hundred. Wished I never sold it. Still have some sliding glass and connestoga top grommets. The Thing used the same method to secure the top.
Well, I'm very excited about that. That sounds so easy when you make it.....we're going to a few meetings with it in the summer.....that looks worse than it is...... I'm currently making a window bus and it's not half bad... good luck to you, I'll stick with it
Glad you guys are going to try and save it ! I own 3 restored VW trucks . Not sure where you are located but if you need anything I have a fair amount of single cab and double cab parts .
THANKS FOR THE cONTENT mAYBE build wooden tray and side doors
Along for the ride 👍🏴
Cool project good luck from vwcoco /uk
That's quite a project! It will be worth it though. Look forward to seeing the progress
Nice project.. gonna be a fun to watch
Looks like a hell of a project. Good job you can get plenty of panels! I've not done an early bus but seen plenty - I'd get it washed and buffed with a fine scotch pad, lose all the loose rust. Then take off that bed and start soda blasting the frame and inside the treasure chest area. Only then can you see what you're really dealing with. Good luck, I'll be following you!
Pretty cool, a wood bed i think would look slick unless you want to keep og.
For the bed a flat decent gauge sheet metal would be a nice replacement than the corrugated metal. Mustie1 did something similar to his single cab.
Flat sheet metal is one option we have considered along with some type of wooden bed. Whatever we do, I would like to match the patina on the truck. I can artificially age whatever we use, but I also want it to look "period" correct for the truck. Thanks for the suggestion.
Realizing that someone sent this Bus to me when I was still hunting for a Scab a month or so ago. Glad it was bought and it receiving the attention it deserves! Ya’ll are gonna make a killer truck! Very excited to see it take shape ✌🏻
Love it, can’t wait to see the progress
Thanks for the info. When I was replacing my used molding/trim on my '71 SB I found that the clips went in well, but the trim was loose. I used EMPI clips. Any tips on getting the trim to sit tightly?
Sometimes it is the different manufacturers for the clips and trim that make it fit loose. Usually I will try to take some small needle nose pliers and tape up the edges of the trip to help prevent marring it. You can sometimes adjust the lip on the trip slightly to make it sit tighter to the car, but you have to do it carefully. Depending on whether the bodywork on the car has a low spot or high spot near the clip, you can still end up the the trim loose or tight in some places.
Yep, that's what I ended up doing. I just applied slight pressure to the strip where the clip is located and they fit just fine.
O m g this is so informative. I just. Bray painted my car the same color it's a nineteen seventy two beetle. I've been struggling all night with clips. Also, the 3 holes in the front hood liner.I cannot get to go in. Thank god for youtube. You guys are amazing
Looking forward to more videos. VW’s and bikes, what could be better?
What if the spare wheel is in place? Can you access it through one of the fender bolt holes?
If the spare wheel is there, it does complicate things. It depends on the type of wheel and the position of the openings in the wheel. I have opened hood latches with the spare in place, but it usually takes a solid bar that I have put some bends in to be able to fish it through the openings. There can be times where depending on the wheel or the way it's positioned that it's almost impossible to do.
I have the very same 71 beetle I'm rebuilding. I'd love to see more content on yours. It looks great!
Thanks for the video.
I have a 1975 vw same color
Awesome video man
