Forget soil, pon or leca: PAFCAL is here. Let's see if PAFCAL is the future of houseplant growing.
PAFCAL is a (relatively) new, organic soiless growing medium, originating from Japan. It is a colaboration between 2 colossal manufacturers, Toyoya & Suntory and is supposed to be a great alternative to soil for your houseplant growing.
It has started becoming more and more popular around South-East Asia for houseplant growing and semi-hydro - and it can be a good alternative to pon or leca too.
I recently managed to get my hands on some PAFCAL chips....so here we are! LET'S TRY IT and see if it's worth its $$$!

Total 296 subscribers and a Total of 37 Uploaded videos of your channel. I noticed one thing according to your channel your channel videos are not viewed and subscribed. You need to optimize your channel and do video SEO to reach your target audience. Otherwise, if you upload videos to your channel throughout the year, none of your videos will get viral views. If your channel is optimized a little and if the videos are SEO then your channel will rank very fast and your channel will grow. And monetization of your channel will be on.

    I have been using this, and just like soil, you have to see which plants like it and which ones done. I find plants with small roots, loves it, but plants like monsteras take a long time to adjust to it. Also I used to wet it before using it and I find it is easier to work with if you pot the plant then water through and don't pack it just drop in around the roots. I agree with her, just use it by itself because it is expensive. I had a disaster last week where my plants got knocked down from a windstorm and I had aroid mix and pafcal mixed together. I had to wait until it dried to pick that stuff out and it was a pain.

      So far I have mixed feelings about it. I’ve been using it only for Hoyas, but there are a few that are growing nicely and a few that don’t. Still early days for concrete conclusions.

    • @PlantyMary

      I just water the pot, all the branches with the aerial roots remain as is. Medium is just soil with lots (LOTS) of perlite for good aeration. Indeed pothos is so easy to grow, doesn’t need any special medium.

    Got my Lacunosa on August 31, 2021, and since then, it's been one of my finest and biggest Hoyas. Blooms constantly! It was in Pon, in a small pot. Decided on April 3 to repot it into a larger pot, again in Pon! Unfortunately, the water roots that were in the reservoir largely disappeared. Haven't had any problems with any other Hoyas (I have almost 100). After 4-5 days, the leaves became soft and wrinkled, and have been like that ever since. It's been a month! It hasn't dropped any leaves, but looks extremely thirsty. It's also been soaked in water for a few days. Very suspicious Lacunosa! ;-) Thanks for a great TH-cam channel!

      I have found lacunosa to be extremely temperamental in pon! I have restarted my lacunosa and decided to chop the heck out of it. Half of the cuttings became mushy and died after moved to pon from water but the other half is going strong and are growing like crazy now. So I ended up with 4 plants. I’d say take some cuttings and restart the plant. At least you won’t lose it. …and thank you for your kind words!

      Well, 2 cuttings have just started rooting in water, I have put a couple more in ADA aquarium soil (similar to stratum), depending on how many will make it I may do half in pon (semi-hydro) and half in orchid mix... as I have read mixed reviews on linearis in pon... TBD. (I think its behaviour is similar to retusa but can't say for sure yet).

    • @PlantyMary

      Just have in mind that if you mix with perlite, the perlite will end up all on the surface and stratum on the bottom. I had this happen with some other propagations. Hello from Canada, just found your page. Love Hoyas, going down the rabbit hole learning about plant pest. Thought I had thrips at one time and threw out a couple plants haven’t seen anything else. At that time I was going to be away from home and was unable to treat them weekly. 😢 I am now prepared to deal with any pest that want to challenge me. Some people wash off the old Sulphur weekly then put fresh on I think I would just leave it on and add on top of old….what is your thoughts? It has become an obsession now looking my plants constantly and it is taking out all the enjoyment. Just heading over to watch some more of your videos. All the best with those flat mites.

    • @PlantyMary
      @PlantyMary 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! I’m sorry you had to throw away plants but this may happen in a plant journey. I have also thrown away plants in the past - not Hoyas tho! I hold these for dear life! 😂 You will indeed need to wash and re-apply, for 2 reasons: 1. More mites will be washed away with washing 2. If you don’t wash, more sulfur will be accumulated so it will be harder for the plant to photosynthesize and it may start going downhill. Good luck!

    Just for sharing, I don't have many Hoya, I learn flat mites from youtube but I haven't buy a microscope. When I saw some symotom like that on my Hoyas. I try to use a piece of Sulphur Soap, then use a cutter to make it into power like. Mix it with water in a spray bottle (if you mix it with very little water it will be quite sticky) Spray it on the Hoya and rub on the plant with fingers and let it stay. Or can just rub the soap on hand and rub it on plant 😆 I find new leaf grow again. I will do it if I have time just for cleaning.

      I know, right?! They are super cute! I got them off of Amazon. If you search “dragonfly orchid clips” you’ll get plenty of options.
