Christmas During War Time at Historic Rippon Lodge
What would have the holidays been during times of crisis and war? The 2024 edition of "Holidays Through the Ages" at Rippon Lodge Historic Site investigates how peace and joy are found in trying moments in history. Exploring the evolution of Christmas itself in America, the conflict of participating or breaking from traditions that are no longer one’s own, and creating joy during wartime are just some of the topics we explore.

Thank you for the video
Interesting video! I remember author Shelby Foote saying confederate soldiers made something called “sloosh” with cornbread and bacon fat. Sounds similar!
I visited a couple of years ago but it was closed. Thank you for providing the opportunity to see the inside. Great tour and I appreciate that you showed where the wall studs were let into the floor. I didn’t know it was done without a sole plate.
Coffee Hill...
Kevin, did AP Hill capture many union stragglers and desereters on Vint Hill Road?
Really interesting channel. Keep up the great work.
I wish I could find more information on Mosby’s attack on the O and A railroad trestle over Bull Run.
Thanks for the history of this house. Good job restoring it.
what if we renamed woodbridge to browntown that would be pretty cool
Interesting! Thank you.
Thanks for doing this video! I'm an amateur historian focusing on the Civil War, Jersey Brigade and the VI Corps.
I'm researching family history, and I may be a descendant of him. This is fascinating. When I found my great -great-grandfather's parent's names, I found Dangerfield Newby.
That was a really great piece on the origins of Santa Clause in the US. Thank you for making it.
I took my grandsons there about two weeks ago. Ages 13 and 10. We walked the entire place and ended up here. I was surprised/happy how interested the boys were. I think standing on the ground that a GGGG Grandfather stood, most likely in fear, struck a cord.
Great video!
It's a short trail. I've walked it several times.
Thank you for sharing PW Office of Historic Preservation. This was a very interesting video and assignment.
This deserves more views. Nice video.
Excellent illustrations and engaging speaker. Are there any low altitude aerials (1930's) of the RR's near Pageland?
Hello! To the best of my knowledge there are none other than the 1937 USGS aerials available. If you're interested in details of what the area around the track looked like, the best suggestion I can make is the ICC Valuation Maps for the Southern Railway, available through the National Archives. Manassas is shown as part of Valuation Section 2e (former Orange & Alexandria) and Valuation Section 14 (former Manassas Gap)
I learned about young VA. Major in Gettysburg. I was immediately intrigued and started searching for information. This a very fascinating to learn about his life. It's a shame that he mortally wounded on July 2nd 1863 on the second day of battle. It's amazing how he made until August before passing away. Rest in Peace. 😢
Thanks for the coverage of the prelude to the second battle of Manassas!
Of course been on the footbridge. Did not realize that was formerly the main through town. Love Occoquan!
Awesome video thanks for sharing the history.
Well done. It is so important that these stories are told.
I was 10 years old at the time. My father and I would often come up there to enjoy the natural beauty of the area and I was fascinated by that old bridge. It was so sad to see it go.

There were buffalo in Prince William county? Where the herds large at one time?
It has been estimated that over 60 million bison roamed North America when Columbus landed in 1492. In the early 1700s, Virginia had more American bison than any other Atlantic state! Much like the decline of bison in the west, overhunting led to the decline of the buffalo along the east coast.
@@PWC_History Are there any left in Virginia at all? If so, where?
Unfortunately, not any in the wild.

Interesting man
This is a great story… one that I learned about when I discovered Mr. Clark’s grave at Cedar Run cemetery. “From the wounds of an assassin…” began his epitaph. And from that moment I HAD to learn the whole story. Thanks for this video!
Hey it's Barb J with the sheep farm. I WOULD LOVE to have walk through tours during the different stages. Living in an old house is always an adventure when you start repairing walls and ceilings. So much to see and do with this old house. Knew Mrs Webster and Betty Machin in years gone by. Looking forward to the bamboo solution too.😁 Dont know why this place fascinates me so..but it's resurrection will be amazing.
Make sure to follow us online and on social media as we provide updates during the restoration of the property!
@@PWC_History I am following for sure!
Looking forward to seeing again when restored!
Where can I find more history about John fox
Very interesting! Thank you.
Not to forget the first civilian casualty, 85 yr.old grandma Judith Henry, whose feet were blown away along with the wall of her house by a cannonball when USA Capt.Ricketts' artillery moved atop Henry hill from the west, turned and took out the CSA snipers in the Henry house to their left on Henry hill, scene of the midday artillery battle against Stonewall Jackson's artillery on the eastern slope. Judith's granddaughter Ellen and their slave Lucy hid inside the chimney during the unceasing barrage, and Ellen remained deaf for the rest of her life.
Is this the same Joe Corson that Elliot Offen severly beat up at the Stage Delicatessen years ago?

Great job Bill.

Excellent video! I have wanted to see the inside of this house since I was in high school (1980-1984). Having grown up here in PWC, it’s amazing how much history is still standing all around us. I can’t wait to see how you guys are going to restore this place!

Are they allowing people to walk around the outside of the house to get a closer look at it, or is it fenced off?

Don Hakenson is awesome!!!
I have some photographs I believe would add some more details to this particular skirmish.
why do i imagine his voice sounding like jamie foxx
Look at my avatar. Now look at the photo in the bottom right of the battlefield marker at 12:21. That was my ancestor in the 60th Georgia Infantry on the other side of the tracks firing on the exposed Yankee right flank. The 60th Georgia was eventually flanked by the 5th New Jersey and my ancestor was killed. He's buried in an unmarked grave on the battlefield.
Pretty amazing that Eppa Barnes bought the house from the family that owned him. That had to be a proud day. I've been there before but haven't had the opportunity to tour it yet. I now know where I've seen the building before it was moved. Thank you for showing that. Really great they were able to restore it. Is the Lomond Caretaker's house open for viewing or is it just offices? I grew up down the street from Lomond starting back in 1970 (before they moved the slave quarters) and have always been interested in seeing inside of those structures. The caretaker's houses is the only one I haven't seen inside.
The Ben Lomond Caretaker's House is currently under restoration but will eventually be office space and a visitor contact station. Follow us on Facebook with Prince William Office of Historic Preservation for updates as the continue work on this project.
