I listen to this song every year, and every year it makes me bawl like a child, it makes me salute our troops even though I've never served, i regret never enlisting but at 30 years old its too late.it breaks me to listen to this song. But i will listen to it every year from now till i pass. I have the utmost respect for our men and women in service, past present and future
Yes he puts you right on the ship, very sad. Great song.
I’m just glad another person gets to enjoy Gordie Howes voice 😂
I've lost count of how many times life has nearly killed me. That's a pretty good thing
Great Big Sea is from the East Coast of Canada; PEI, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunkswick.. they all have very folk inspired music; a lot of fiddles and irish roots which is why Great Big Sea's music has that sound.
Nah...they dont have hurricanes that far north. You need warm water for a hurricane and the great lakes are far from warm. It was just a badass storm.
Missed it
Yay, caught some of the stream
Hey there tried to send you e-mail. I know you're a kd Lang fan, there's a recent interview on CBC about her CCMA award, fun watch.
You’re really cool. Keep it up!
Love your Halifax Mooseheads T-shirt. Go Moose. The Hip were a great band, wrote for Canada. Funny I've been watching some Australian bands.
Love that shirt!
Anybody who has ever been out in very rough seas know that you truly worry, maybe not of yourself but the ones that you will behind.
Why do you keep pausing the song
Check out Gordon Lightfoot's Sundown.
Edmund Fitzgerald, American freighter that sank during a storm on November 10, 1975, in Lake Superior, killing all 29 aboard. Its mysterious demise inspired Gordon Lightfoot’s hit song “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” (1976), which helped make it the most famous shipwreck in the Great Lakes.
The entire project is about Chanie wenjeck, a first Nations indigenous boy in 1966, who tried to find his way home running away from a residential school where hundreds of thousands of Indigenous children were forced from their homes to attend all across Canada suffering extreme abuse in all forms. The entire project secret path tell the whole story of Chanie's journey until his end. Definitely recommend watching it in full. 🧡
NCA records is not Canadian
You should watch his documentary "once were brothers'
This song hits. Every new solo raises the bar.
When Lightfoot died recently that maritime cathedral rang the bell 30 times for him.
During Gordon Lightfoot's funeral, the church bell chimed and rang 30 times...
KD Lang is my favourite.
Tash, seeing you nearly overwhelmed by the list of participants was something of a surprise. You really HAVE become an honourary Canadian! For kicks, it's interesting to debate who was not yet quite famous enough to be included, or possibly unavailable. Oh yeah, for a huge number of Canadians of several generations, The Guess Who is canada's all time greatest band. Burton Cummings was the lead singer and keyboard player, Yes, he sang American Woman.
She knows what a Chesterfield but the question is, does she know what a K car is? 😏
Love our Canadian treasure, Joni Mitchell. It is worth the time to listen to this song by Joni from her original recording. And then listen to a more current version by her. Both are fantastic, but the more recent version sounds very seasoned and she displays a huskier voice that convinces you she has thoroughly lived life from both sides. She is so special. Thanks for reacting to dear Joni, who still performs. In fact, in 2021, she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors and recently appeared at the Newport Folk Festival and brought the house down. 👏👏👏🥰🇨🇦❤️
The water temp in the lake hovers around 45 degrees. The night that happened there was a storm system coming up from lower Michigan with alot of moisture. It was moving north at a steady pace. At the same time a clipper was coming down from Canada from the west. Apparently the idea was they might be able to beat the storm system to Whitefish Bay. They miscalculated and the result was 30-35ft waves, freezing rain and snow, and 60-70mph winds. Gordon Lightfoot never accepted a dime for this song. Every penny it made went into a fund and was dispersed to the families of the men that were on the Fitzgerald. The sister ship to the Fitzgerald is still in use. The Arthur M Anderson still makes short runs. Every year on November 10 at about 7:20 pm they blow a signal tribute then blow a horn for the Fitzgerald. Kinda creepy to see if you ever get the chance!
This is Canadas- I was only 19
I was at a Def Leopard concert in Ottawa, Canada (where I’m from) and Billy Idol joined on stage. Billy Idol did open for them but was still very cool.
Love your passion and just subscribed. All be checking some other reactions of yours.
Look at ”i know my real name is Steven” ( dont know how to spell, from sweden) 😢
🔥🔥🇨🇦🔥🔥
Tash, when you watch the National Rememberence Day ceremony from Ottawa it is intense. The national tv network speaks as little as possible and allows the ceremony to play out. The wreath laying is especially emotional when you see the Silver Cross Mother lay a wreath for all the mothers of Canada and then the winners of the Legion's youth contest in essay writing, posters and poetry lay a wreath to represent the youth of Canada. At the end of the official ceremony many citizens take the poppy they have been wearing and place them on the Tomb Of The Unknown. Always brings a lump in my throat. The veterans then march past the VIP's present and the citizens on the sidewalks cheer and clap for the veterans. As Canadians we are quietly respectful of our veterans.
trauma... the birth marks are bruises
Geddy’s line the best
you need to read his book its all in it you will know where the story in the song comes from
Nice reaction. You're so right about those harmonies, and that _gorgeous_ fade-out. It adds another deep layer of emotion to all the imagery that came before. I still remember _exactly_ where I was when I first heard this song, 30+ years ago. Cheers.
You might want to see a movie Robbie was in, with Jody Foster and Gary Busey, called 'Carny'. Great flick! Good acting by Robbie, showing that mysterious carnival side of his nature.
The movie is avaible for free here on Utube. If like me you are female and like good looking men you will love it. The movie is not bad, but Robbie have never looked better, just gorgeous and sexy, and his acting were quite belieaveable, not Oscar material, but he plays the role very convincingly. could be because as Barney Hoskyns wrote in his biography of The Band, Robbie played a man not unlike himself, taking on too much, wearing too many hats.
Religious sects like Holy Rollers - and other denominations that believe the Holy Spirit moves people to speak in tongues and physically convulse.
Trust me. You dont want a moose. It's like the Emu thing, though i dont think theyre as mean. But theyre just massive.
If you're looking for more k d lang, I really feel more people need to hear "My Old Addiction" and "Until the Heart Caves in."
I would have loved to be there for that concert! Man I'm jealous. I saw Barenaked Ladies in concert way back in the 90's, just before, I believe, One Week hit big. Steven Page was still in the band. They are awesome in concert. Their encore song, they performed Madonna's Material Girl. It was awesome.
I had the honour of seeing The Hip, live in concert twice. They were phenomenal. The day Gord passed, is a very sad dark day in Canadian music for me.
There is a video on youtube: th-cam.com/users/liveyGd764YU9yc?si=soAc0bXexNl5tUXq It is a movie of The Secret Path. The Secret Path is a book, CD and movie that Gord Downie wrote. It's based on a true story of a boy, Chanie Wenjack who was taken from his home and sent to a residential school. He ran away from the school and tried to walk his way home. He followed the railroad tracks. But the cool weather and rain, he ended up passing away before ever making it home. Gord had heard about the story later in his life and was shocked and upset that they never taught us any of this stuff in school. He met with Chanie's living relatives, sisters, nieces and nephews. He asked their permission to tell the world about Chanie's story. This was one of the last things Gord did before passing away. Together with Chanie's family they made the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack fund: downiewenjack.ca/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw65-zBhBkEiwAjrqRMOdoDl3AHcjqK_zci8OJ6r6tns522tjzVTMZm_QSrDPoo86P8Y5dwxoCVswQAvD_BwE Inspired by Chanie’s story and Gord’s call to build a better Canada, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund aims to build cultural understanding and create a path toward reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Our goal is to improve the lives of Indigenous people by building awareness, education, and connections between all peoples in Canada. His book, CD and movie have become tools being used in our schools, NOW, to help learn about what happened.
Just found your channel with this reaction. Not many people have reacted to it, and it's so great to see somebody reacting to it who knows many of the singers in the song! Also back in 1985 Canadian artists had their own song for Africa: The song is called Tears Are Not Enough by Northern Lights. Performed live in 2022: th-cam.com/video/ZqFgJt5Tlpw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wE0RXbxZWWWBuTcO To see the list of artists: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tears_Are_Not_Enough In 2010 when Haiti had it's earthquake, like the US who redid a version of We are the World, some Canadian artists got together but with a new song. how many fingers am i holding up
This song. It is about a gay boy. Protected by his mom. Against his uncles who are hunting him down. This breaks my heart.
Thanks so much just made me so proud and cried .
Gordy Howe? I think you're thinking of somebody else entirely. Famous for other things.
You should review the Making of Tears are not enough.
