Cars, Airplanes, and Heavy Metal, with Max Carlisle (Guitar MAX).
Onboard a Cutting Edge Aerobatic Airplane (Gamebird GB1)
It's one of the most extreme aerobatic aircraft made today: the Gamebird GB1. With over 300 horsepower and all carbon composite construction, the only limit is the the creativity and skills of the pilot. It took me most of the flight to just get used to the sensitivity of the controls! What a difference from my 65 horsepower 1946 Aeronca Chief!
Huge thanks to Ben Marcus for letting me check out his plane!

The True Fate of Santa Monica Airport...

Turns out I was wrong about the status of the Santa Monica airport! I head back down there (from Van Nuys) to check out the Douglas Day event and see how the local community is involved in the airport. Plenty of aircraft on display. Vintage aircraft like a Piper Cub, T6, and Citabria, plus lot of the new electric aircraft like Pipistrel, and EVTOL Joby and Pivotal. Lets fire up the Aeronca Chie...

Flight VLOG - A Quiet Day Flying The VAN NUYS Pattern
They originally where sold as “ Time Out “ benches for children. I saw them on EBay, ordered two for my shack. Can’t wait to set them up. 73’s.
Love the intro music
I’ve been kinda back n forth on whether to delve down this rabbit hole - about whether I’d use it and if it would be worth the time and money just to have a hobby that mostly boils down to using my hobby to talk to other folks about my hobby - but this video convinced me. Plus it’s cool to see another person in my demo (age and fellow pilot and rocknroller) who’s finding it gratifying. Great video!
I think it helps a lot to have some people (or at least one person) you already know that you can talk on the radio with. Talking with random people... you might get tired of the surface level conversations pretty quick. But if you know someone or you're using the radio to do something specific, then it can be quite fun.
Will it recieve 80m band?
Wow, that is a strong plane. Now as a non pilot I'm wondering what the max g is of any plane is. I'm thinking that it might go to a unmanned plane.
Will the cell phone ring at the same time as the added phone?
The cell phone will light up, and you'll see the number calling, but only the landline phone hooked up will actual ring.
I've flown in Indian made version Pushpak And always a delight to fly Happy flying 🪽🪽
Great videos sir, I love this content.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy it.
Thanks, Max. That was a sweet roll around the camera's view in the opening! Well done with the editing. 👍
Thank you! Modern cameras are just incredible!
That's really cool looking!
its a real hot rod for sure! :)
Wow yes nice ride indeed, if possible don't get rid of your Aeronca likes here rock on! :)
No worries! The Aeronca is my "daily driver" airplane!
Yeah, the Gamebird is amazing..
It's a beautiful car. For being 35 years, may a little older as I type this, it could just be gaskets, rubber grommets, and maybe camshaft seals? I don't know British Motors, so I can't be specific. My Mitsubishi Eclipse Gt has a 3.8 L V6 Mivec Engine, and will be 18 years old this coming year of 2025, and she had recently been leaking lots of oil, and those items I mentioned above, where her needs. She runs like new again, with her power back. But I'd take her in just to check where those leaks might be coming from before it becomes a real, maybe worse, problem. Otherwise, yeah, she's 35+, and still kicking arse! Beautiful classic drive! I'm curious, for her age, are you still required to smog her for CA DMV purposes? Because i still do, unfortunately..
God job on sticking the landing. Nice and smooth.
I'm not really "into" ham radio, I don't even have an HF station setup at my house anymore. However I love having VHF in my car, we have a great repeater network in my area and its pretty active. Its great for finding out about traffic problems, talking with friends, getting directions, or just listening to various things like marine traffic (draw bridge is open, did it just go up or is it about to close, is it just a quick opening for a sailboat or is it going to be a 30 minute one for a cargo ship and multiple tugs, is the traffic upbound or downbound, should I wait or go to the next bridge). Its so nice to have in the car, and you can talk to some really interesting people especially on a roadtrip. Its saved my ass a couple times, I go to rural areas with zero phone service quite frequently. Ive had a couple breakdowns in such areas before, I was able to get someone on 2 meters and they were able to call me a tow truck. The alternative would have been walking many miles and probably climbing a mountain to get phone service, not fun when its -20 degrees, and the snow is deep.
I think you bring up a great point in that VHF is, in some ways, more practical, as if you need help, it's probably better to get it from someone who is relatively close to you, rather from someone via an HF contact far away!
When hurricane Helene devastated my area in Western North Carolina, cell service was out for 3 days. Would have loved to have some communication to check on family. Grandson is a firefighter/paramedic, and has a ham radio and it was extremely useful.
That's a great reason to get into ham radio! Basic radios are quite inexpensive...
i enjoyed your video thanks a lot. As a "flatlander" from the east coast and a new owner of a 7AC i do not think i would enjoy flying over mountains of such height in a little underpowered fabric airplane, the Appalachian next to me are Ok since often i can cross them with careful planning while having an airport within reach if iI'm 7k or above
Thanks! I'm pretty trusting of this airplane now... even despite it's age!
The CM12 battery you say is dead is a case that holds AA cells inside. If you hold the battery in your hand and push down on the metal contact plate, it will separate allowing you to place AA cells inside
Ah, I didn't realize that, I'll check it out!
Very TINNY audio quality?
You're just hearing it through the camera mic, at a distance. It's perfectly normal phone audio in person.
@@HeavyMetalHorizons Just tried a 2nd Cell2Jack hooked into a non-antique Panasonic DECT 6.0 phone system. Still extremely tinny quality, so not a lemon. Swapped that out for "Xtreme Technologies XLink BT HD". Chalk and cheese. Cell2Jack is going back to AMZ, X-Link is staying. It should be able to handle cellphone audio with equivalent fidelity, not downgrade it to tin can and string.
nice n easy going video...thanks...
I have the non-ultra version and haven't really touched it yet. It's network analyzer cousin and predecessor the NanoVNA I have, however, and I absolutely love being able to set the SWR on my antennas closer to the antenna and not having to deal with trying to key up the radio and verify I'm in range. I have full faith my tinySA will preform as intended, but now I'm kinda sad I didn't get the Ultra, just for the bigger screen if nothing else.
Seems like a good little radio. I would still spring a bit extra for a Yaesu low end model, and have this as a back up. The USB charging is definitely something I wish larger manufacturers would get onboard with. It's got a nice set of features for like $50 though. I'll add it to my list of possible future grabs.
Hey there! Awesome
I love your setup brother❤
Sound quality?
That was just amazing!!!
Thanks!
Awesome video! Found your channel because of your ham radio one. Congrats on taking a paragliding tandem. When you get a chance it would be awsome to see you do a hang gliding tandem flight/video. You can either do a foot launch or an aerotow variety. You described the feeling as different like being a bird or something...that is the way I feel as a hang glider pilot. I'm a private pilot also so I have that as a comparison point, flying a plane is more like a complex car. Flying a glider is like a bird or perhaps freeing like riding motorcycles:)
Great video! Very easy to watch and learn from your explanations of your setup. I'm just working on getting my ham license now. Do you fly hang gliders? That is why I'm pursuing it, for pilot to pilot in air communications plus ground crew retrievals for cross country flying. Cool that you are into airplanes as well. I started there and became a private pilot then found hang gliding later and it is very addictive! Thanks for making a great video!
Thanks! I fly paragliders. Honestly, the paraglider pilots that I know use ham radios and they don't have licenses. Technically it's illegal, but it doesn't seem like anyone cares. But of course if you want to get into the amateur radio / ham world, then I'd encourage you to get the license.
@HeavyMetalHorizons Cool, I didn't realize you were a paraglider pilot already. Did you ever run into this guy out flying? Pretty cool video of him getting the thermal flight in that gave him enough time to go from H2 to H3 in hang gliding. th-cam.com/video/Tp-l7DVqjZ4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sEROMLrxXUUHmuMd
Ham radio?? Whats this? Like Ham and eggs???
Just got here on my first 2 stop cross country and I will say it’s super sketchy in the most awesome way. Tailwind, ridge super close and 2 trees near the runway that’s already a pretty short one. Most badass place I’ve landed loved every second
That’s the spirit! I love that airport. Flabob, right by Riverside is another fun one, and once you get really comfortable, Agua Dulce.
I miss those. One thing you can do with those old phones, that you can't with cell-phones, is slam the handset down hard to hang up. And that big chunk of heavy hardware raises your Desk-Fu to Boss level.
Great video on this oddity that I’m looking into. Now I’m a subscriber.
Awesome! Thank you!
I really enjoyed the video cause I too am a pilot and used to own my little airplane. I also watch DØVYDAS's videos.
Excellent!
Great overview, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. I've been trying to figure out what i needed to do this. I'm used to seeing you with guitars. I kind of did a double take.
I have had an amateur radio license for 30 years (silent for a long time). You are such an approachable individual and do a great job explaining things in a simple way. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching! I hope the video inspires you to get back on the air.
I heard the licenses are only required for boomers is that correct?
Technically no... but yes.
Im subscribed to this guy way back when I started learning guitar
top video and a great radio. be aware those cables carry an older clone chip that only works on Windows 10 (or earlier), for Windows 11 look for a cable utilising the FTDI chip.
Does it connect automatically when you come home?
If you leave it plugged in and powered on, then yes.
Get this man 1 million subs... Now.
It is a great hobby.
another fellow musician thats a ham guy too!
That airport was there LONG BEFORE any of those "Karens" and others moved in. You buy a house off the end of the runway, and then complain about airplanes. So flipping typical of a certain type of people. Brain dead is all I can say!! The developers want it worse than anyone I'm sure. That is such a historic airport. It's really sad!
So cool! Does it work if someone calls you on Whatsapp?
I always wished I could have a landline for the convenience of having it in my bedroom all the time (and they're often really pretty too), but I couldn't afford the monthly payments. Thank you for your video, I now know what I'm saying up for next!
Handy if you have a collectible phone like your lindberg that you just want to enjoy.
I’ve one of these in perfect original condition. 52K miles. Love to cruise around. Can drive 700 miles in a day and not be tired. It is the best of the Jaguars in my opinion.
I didn't know Guitar Max had another channel! What......😮
