As a Basso Profundo myself, if you really DO want to master singing the first octave (The Contra Octave) You have to master the second octave (The Low Octave) A lot of Basses my age are focused on skipping half the second octave notes from E2 and lower, because they think being able to sing a D2 or an E2 comfortably doesn’t make them a Bass. Frying your voice to hit D1 doesn’t sound nice. Because it’s better to have a loud, full, rich D2 than a quiet, weak, croaky D1. My vocal classification is an Oktavist, but I can sing Basso Profundo because it’s the area I can sing operatic. 15:55 I can now sing exactly like Ioannis does here, he sings from F2-C3 in a deep, dark, rich and full operatic voice. If he can do it, I can do it. So can you guys. But you won’t do it if you’re focused on notes rather than quality.

I am becoming more interested in becoming a basso profundo, as I tried to sing many times and E2 was mostly easy. I do however have trouble projecting a bit of my range from D2 and below. My choir teacher thinks my lowest note is B1, I had experiences where subharmonics, fries, or something in between that reached F1. I however mainly unsure. I did tried to actually try to do my chest voice and went below E2 and Fry or maybe something different, initiated at G1 and it only stopped at C1. By the way I am only 15.

I find that a little bit of alcohol can help the voice warm up a lot faster, especially when it's high proof. Is this a good method?

I think your cool accent adds about 500% more to your abilities, but maybe that’s just me? 😂 But seriously, your advice is 100% spot-on. DO NOT FORCE IT! I do vocal “falls,” just slowly but surely, and QUIETLY. (Why I just shouted there is kind of counterproductive, isn’t it?) When the sound gets faint, it gets faint, and I stop. One more thing that helps me is to do easy-tension vocal rises in falsetto until I feel slight pain. At one point, I could sing five octaves of D (D2-D7). Now in my 60s, I can only go to about an A6 (which I do very sparingly anymore), but I can get down to C2 and Bb1 now! I’ll just let the sopranos go to D7, and I’ll continue to sing baritone/bass. :-)

13:27 is the truest thing ever spoken by any vocalist ever. I had to spend years figuring out how to produce my source/filter ( new, semi-official name for scream/harsh/"growl" type vocals. Just trying to spread the word about it because the terms for these kinds of vocals are completely disorganized ) vocals properly and I'm even still working hard on it. I find myself here because I have a bass-adjacent vocal range, and I am challenging myself to improve my voice in every way, shape and form.

This is a really helpful vid man, I'm indeed a young bass (14 and low bass) and i don't really know what im doing. I enjoy singing, but i know my voice isn't developed into what it will be. I get frustrated when i can't hit clears notes and it has caused me to kinda stop. I am hoping with time my voice will do it's thing and lower into what i hope it will but we can only find out. Γεια σας! Very interesting three videos, thanks! I had never thought to ask what the difference between those terms were, I sort of assumed they were synonyms... I've been singing as baritone/bass in a choir for a couple years now (after more than 30 years hiatus since singing choir in music school as a teenager), and I love the low notes, even though I can't go below E2, unfortunately. Well, when I have a cold I do get to D2 or even Db2, hehe. Finally, off topic, I've been learning Greek for about 8 months now, otherwise I would not have understood why you call the cello and other string instruments "organs", but what first gave away your native language (and prompted me to look at your name) was that you pronounce "internet" as "idernet" (to my Brazilian ears). What would you call someone who is not a soloist, but, in a choir setup, can hit fairly (key word fairly) audible, resonant, sustained chest voice G#1-B1s (plus or minus a step, let's say)? I suppose that this person is certainly not a basso profundo, an oktavist, nor a contrabass by your definitions.

Here to learn, i´ve recently joind my church´s choir. I´m definetely a baritone, don´t know any more specifics than that, but i want to learn to hit lower notes, to add in the choir melody and overall feeling.

What about death metal growls? Basso profundos, contra basses produce lower sounds compared to basso cantantes or bass baritones? Any thoughts?
