Progress, not Perfection 😉 (Beginner Tenor Sax Ballad 🎷)
... life has been crazy! 🤯 Traveling across continents, family members' health challenges, and now a minor flood... All within one month. 🙈 But I'm back! 🤩 And playing the saxophone always brings me joy, and is a beautiful distraction for when things get hectic. Learning new things every week... loving this song lately, especially the sweet middle part, unfortunately I messed up the ritardando with the playback - sorry. 🤪
Any tips on how to improve general intonation? I struggle with that and feel like I'm always sharp... 🙈
Thanks to everyone who is still following my sax journey!! 💖

    Pretty good! May I give you and other beginners a tip? It is better to put the mouthpiece on the neck first and then both on the body. Because sometimes it can be very difficult to put the mouthpiece on your neck because the cork is still quite dry and brittle at the beginning. If the neck is already immobile and firmly on the body and you force the mouth piece onto it, the neck can bend. I am sorry for my english whoch is not so good, but I hope you can understand. @@Sax_Tapes Very cool, and that's what it's all about....just wait until you can start playing your favorite songs on the Saxophone, or you can improvise, or play the blues, etc.. Fact/Tip: It's a known fact the concept of sound we have in our minds will affect how we sound on the Saxophone, so one of the best things you can do is listen to other players you like, the music they play, etc. As you continue to progress, you'll have a good idea of how you wanna sound on the Saxophone--I'm sure your Sax Teacher will be talking to you a lot about this as you continue to progress.

    You're making great progress, very nice! Your tuning and timing is really good. Your tone is improving big time--your embouchure, neck and shoulers all look very relaxed. Your fingers are staying close to the keys too! You're doing all the right things=feel great about your progress. Look at how much you have learned since you first got your Saxophone. It's good to think about what we have yet to learn, but it's really important to reflect on what you have learned as this gives us perspective. Sometimes, we just don't see the progress we've made. Look at your progress in this video, and then go back and compare it to the first video you made...your progress should be very evident to you. You'll be up and playing your favorite songs before you know it--keep at it!

      Aww thanks so much for your kind, encouraging comment!! 🙏☺️

  • @Baboon4215
    @Baboon4215 ปีที่แล้ว

    You're making great progress! Keep it up. Your description for this video asked for help on the lower notes, here ya go: 1. We want to make sure our air support comes from the lower diaphragm. There are a number of good breathing exercises for Saxophone playing you can find via your Teacher or here on youtube that will help you with this. The Saxophone is the instrument that comes the closes to the human voice, and you'll find breathing exercises that singers use also work great for the Saxophone. Check out "Jacob's Vocal Academy's Vocal Warm up Series here on youtube....I assure you those exercises will help you out with your breathing. 2. Keep your throat open/relaxed and avoid 'crunching' the shoulders. When you see a player 'shrugging' their shoulders when they play, it's a sign they have shallow air support. Keep your shoulders down and keep your throat open/relaxed and push from your diaphragm. If you watch your video, you'll notice a few times--when going higher--some of the notes became a little thin--no worries, it's all part of the learning process we all go through. What can cause these higher notes to sound thin is that we may simply be 'choking' the note, so keep your throat open/relaxed, and this will ensure the air can flow from your diaphragm into your oral cavity freely without being 'cut off' from having a tense neck, etc.. 3. Focus on keeping the oral cavity open/relaxed too; doesnt do any good to have the neck open/relaxed, but then the Oral Cavity is tense. Don't make the mistake of 'biting' with the jaw--this will cause problems for you with tuning, etc.. As you continue to progress with your playing, you'll learn some cool tricks you can do with our Oral Cavity to change your sound....an oral cavity that becomes 'smaller' causes the air to be faster, and more compressed/compact vs an oral cavity that is open will result in air that is 'slower'....think about it like a hole/leak on a inner tube: the smaller the hole, the more highly-pitched you'll hear the air leaking from the hole vs the bigger the hole , the lower the pitch you'll hear the air coming out. 4. Think of the embouchure muscles around the lips like a rubber band--we 'stretch' the corners of the mouth lips when we go higher. But then, we we go lower, we relaxe the muscles a little bit and form more of an 'o' shape with our embouchure, while still maintaining a grip with the corner of the lips around the MP. Try saying 'eeh', then 'aah', then 'ooo' and notice the change in sound between each word.....this is what we do on the Saxophone too. We use the lips of the mouth to form a seal around the Mouthpiece, so think of the sound 'eeh' when you go higher, but then think of the sound 'ooo' when you go lower--hope this all makes sense. Just like @Jeroen Neve says, use a metronome, but also a tuner too--these 2 things will help you out immensely. Keep up the great attitude and having fun with the Saxophone!

    So cool you're learning to play saxophone :) From embouchure to air support, these things you learned in your first lesson will become 2nd nature to you in with practice. Be consistent with your practice. Have a alloted time each day, set that time aside, and try not to let anything interfere with it--make your practice sessions a priority. An important tip that will help you as you learn (all beginning players struggle with this) is to keep your fingers close to the keys when you play. When you practice, something you can do is to stand in front of a mirror and watch your fingers to make sure you don't come too far out. As you do this, practice it slowly and watch those fingers. Working on this now will prevent it from turning into a bad habit (fingers that are too far from the keys) that will be much harder to fix later on. Keeping the fingers close to the keys will help you to play more smoothly/quickly as your progress with your playing. You seem to be really excited/having fun learning to play the Saxophone--keep up the great attitude and good things will happen for you!
