Play Test of my Newly Repaired Victor III and Original Dixieland 'Jass' Band's Livery Stable Blues
This is my first play test of the Victor III phonograph that I just repaired to working order after the atrocious things that had been done to it by a previous "repair" person. This is a 1918 repressing of the 1917 Livery Stable Blues by the Original Dixieland Jass Band on Victor batwing label 18255.

Repairing a Victor III Spring Barrel Spindle
มุมมอง 13021 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I picked up a Victor III this summer for way too much money, especially given the appalling shape it was in. The last hurdle I had was to reattach the spindle to the spring barrel. If you remember from the previous video on this machine I had discovered that the spring barrels had been rage-welded together (not an actual term, just one used to describe the obvious anger with which they appear t...
A ca. 1930s Phonola Portable Suitcase Phonograph Record Player Playing "Honolulu Moon" Victor 20596
มุมมอง 38221 วันที่ผ่านมา
This was a rescue, a 1930s Waters and Conley Phonola portable phonograph. At the time they were also producing electric phonographs so this would have been their inexpensive model for the folks who probably still didn't have electricity in their homes! Someone has replaced the bottom board with a piece of Masonite that has a painting on the inside (use what you've got on hand!) as I think this ...
Trying out my new Standard Disc Record adapter that my son made. "Has Anybody Seen Our Cat???"
มุมมอง 18221 วันที่ผ่านมา
My son is going for a degree in mechanical engineering and has access to a machine shop. I asked him if he could make me adapters for Standard Disc and Harmony records. Using aluminum stock he made me one of each and they're beautiful! Chamfered around the edges they don't grab the record or pucker the labels. A perfect set. Aretino records would require a lot more aluminum so I think we'll mak...

Went out for a little "Thrift Store Retail Therapy" and came back with some discs that put a smile on my face for the first time in almost a week. Records have all been cleaned and listened to. I've made some new discoveries and it's been like Christmas for my ears. Update: So just listened to that Lou Reed record. Yeah, I'm going to have to keep that one...

Latest Thrift Store Find: "There's Rhythm In The River" by Blanche Calloway & her Joy Boys" Victor

I'm always psyched to visit my local thrift store and find a set of Victor Scroll records; I was even more pleased to find this one by Blanche Calloway (sister to Cab Calloway) and her Joy Boys playing "There's Rhythm In The River" on Victor Scroll 22641. I'm playing this on the grand-daddy of Orthophonics; the Victor VV 8-30X
Vic III Part III: Flipping the Main Gear
มุมมอง 2144 หลายเดือนก่อน
In tearing apart the motor on this Victor III Phonograph I noticed, among other things, that the main drive gear was rather worn on the side where it interacts with the turntable drive shaft. I imagine this is due to the two spring barrels being haphazardly welded together and the motor operating against its normal design. As I cannot simply run down to the parts store to fetch a new gear I opt...

Early 1900s Herzog Record Cabinet
มุมมอง 1304 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently picked up a Victor III external horn phonograph and it came with a "matching" cabinet. It turns out it's a simple Herzog record cabinet, licensed by the Victor Talking Machine Co. to go along with their phonographs probably ca. 1904. I decided to get to work cleaning up this cabinet whilst I await parts to arrive in my mailbox...

Taking a break from console and turntable restoration to go out to my favorite local haunts to see what I could find. There are a slate of thrift shops near me that still take in 78s though they are few and far between. I haven't had a day this good in quite some time, I was beginning to lose hope. Persistence paid off! How often do you find an EX quality Chess 78 in a thrift shop? And for $.50...

Edison Diamond Disc After Ultrasonic Cleaning: Part 3
What's New is an ironic song title for a 61-year-old console.
You got that thumb instead of installing microwave ovens😀
I have one just like that minus the tone control. How can I find a schematic diagram for it. I do have have several nos crystal cartridges that work perfectly for this unit. Great repair. GREAT VIDEO 👍
Maybe spray some laquer finish to preserve the label.
I actually do! I just didn't include that step. I tried both a flat and a glossy finish and hands down, glossy finish wins
Nice job on the Victor III. They can be frustrating at times. Like Goldilocks it was the 3rd one that was, just right for me😅
Frustrating is right! As it is it sounds like I need to go in and give the governor shaft a bit of oil, speed seems slightly inconsistent. I just have to make sure the springs NEVER wind fully down, I'd hate for it to lose its catch inside and have to go through that ALL over again ;-)
This record is supposedly not too difficult to find, but whenever I come across a copy, it’s either priced unreasonably high or the bids go beyond what I’m willing to pay.
This one was listed on Discogs in Fair condition for $19. Given the description it sounded like a fine player to me. I picked it up and turns out it was WAY better than described. Happy to have a copy in my collection.
Nice! Maybe also soldering the inside would have really stabilized it further?
I thought about that but I can see when looking closely that the solder did come through, underneath the flange and a little into the pressing. I was afraid of getting too much inside thereby rubbing on the springs
Wich needles can play 5 to 10 times?
Nowadays, at a distance it looks loke a Crossley Cruiser!
Is a VV-300 mechanism the same but it is in a different cabinet? I mostly mess with late 30's thru 60's record changers but I have a friend that got a VV-300 and asked can I get it working so I am in research phase. I cranked the handle and released the brake. It did not spin but I gave it a little push and it started spinning. I tried to lower the needle but the friction stopped it from spinning. It looks very similar externally.
Yes, basically the same with maybe just a few screws in a few different places. Same concept, same maintenance needed. Good luck!
I love the compactness of this - and to my ears it sounds quite nice!
That's Billy Murray I know that voice from anywhere
Harmony records were remaindered Columbia records that got a new label, a bigger hole, and sold at a discount. I had a vintage wooden adapter many years ago. It got lost. Ditto an adapter that I bought from a guy on Taking Machine Forum about 10 years ago. I have a couple Standards where someone constructed a smaller hole with tape and cardboard. I have now reached the point where I can center the record after only 3 tries! The singer is Billy Murray in a very early performance (1903?) Thanks.
Cool player - I just picked one up with a dead cartridge. Did your new cartridge fit well? Also - how do you convert 4 cartridge pins to 2?
This dates more around the mid to late 40s.
Why not just play this on the Magnavox itself?
I like the TT and cart better on the Garrard. I've got LOTs of stuff plugged into lots of other stuff ;-)
There’s obviously no piano by Ed Gagan on this side
One note about the 'odd-spindle' talking machines: they were basically made to sell at discount prices, so that the purchaser of said machine had to buy the records as well.
I have one! Love mine!❤
I thought I had heard all of the various imitators of The Two Black Crows (The Black Jacks, Two Dark Knights) but this is new to me. Thanks.
Cool record!
Water can get inside to the core which will absorb and expand, ruining the discs. Check out my cleaning method for heavily soiled discs! th-cam.com/video/EZMcKMAM2kg/w-d-xo.html
that sounds amazing
I to enjoy collecting Halloween carols. Nice finds.
Oh, the precious drama! 💙🤍😢 No, dear, not lonesome, just worried. And scared.
Ha, same!
What if you were to coat the sides/edge with something to seal it from water, if you ever needed to clean another one? Some kind of resin or varnish that is waterproof?
From what I can tell, it's an uncommon record, and has value particularly with "Are You Lonesome Tonight" seemingly not being reissued on LP (at least in a quick search).
sounds great. good work!
I have that same 78 recently discovered in my grandads vast collection of music!😮😊 loads of everything just getting started going through it all. But nice idea, going to make vinyl lino out of the gubbed lp's!😉 cheers ma man got loads of proper old boys could let you know of any one's in particular you are after?🤔😎

I havve a Webcor model 113 and I am experiencing the same problems as you are. I am also disassembling it for cleaning. Mine won't change records automatically either.
Super! The VV 8-30X sounds fabulous.
Brewer and SHipley - Tarkio Road!
Sounds good but will sound so much better once you clean it(Dawn dish soap and warm water - that will help get rid of oils along with the dirt)! It was kind of suspenseful, waiting for the needle to hit that bird dropping... By the way, I hope you post all of the sides you can of the V discs!! // update: ok, I went into your channel and you know what you're doing , but really, it didn't deserve a cleaning first?
Actually, this was cleaned on my ultrasonic cleaner first before recording. This had been stored for so long unsleeved and rubbing against all other records, that the "dirt" and "oils" are actually permanently worn surfaces, including the "bird dropping" (not actually a bird dropping). You should have seen the bottom of my ultrasonic cleaner tank after I put three loads of these through. It's an unfortunate product of its time; records dragged from one location to another, treated as a disposable medium (which it was intended to be). I'm just lucky I got them in mostly playable condition. I don't play records that haven't been cleaned unless I'm doing a comparison. Check out my video on ultrasonic cleaning these. I've long since abandoned washing each one individually with dish soap. The results I've found with my over 5,000 78s speak for themselves. Cheers!
@@agarso I have long wanted a Sonic cleaner. I've looked at them over the years and watched technology get a little bit better. I might have one before I die, but right now I need to concentrate on my final career.
another tip, the transducers will generate ambient heat in the water in a pinch about half a cap full of dawn dish soap no tap water there are contaminants in it. for stickers i use a product called UNDU, it softens the glue on the sticker but will not destroy the label underneath and it dries clear its fantastic enjoyed the video 👍
you need to use distilled due to minerals in water. also use a surfactant to reduce water tension it acts as a detergent too many records at once. just some tips 👍
M auriez vous un cpu pour Jukebox Rock Ola model 490 merci
This record was released in 1953, according to the Cadillac label catalog number, listen to this one released in 1952, written by Bill Haley who would later release it in 1955. 😉 th-cam.com/video/BjhePnulFEU/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=The45Prof
almost identical to moms Magnavox. I think they purchased from dimig electric, souderton, pa in 67. get out those Xmas records!
Trombone and his band are phenomenal !!! Love this music...
Very nice good luck with your restoration they machines by the Victor Talking machine always seem more attractive then what we have here in the U.K.😊😊😊
If there are chips on the edges where the paper stuff in the middle is exposed, would it be bad to get the records wet as the water could soak into the middle layer?
You mean like on a Columbia red label? I'm not sure of many others that use that method. No, I've cleaned hundreds of those and of the hundreds maybe 5 or 6 had a little "paper" exposed. I never had one damaged (any more) by that. Keep in mind that I've never cleaned any SEVERELY damaged Columbia reds, they just typically aren't worth it.
Add some water while using the hole saw to prevent melting the shellac.
Great idea, I'll give it a shot. Some of the labels that are a little more susceptible I might try something different
What a beautiful machine.
Thanks!
Cool
