I started out with oil painting, then acrylic painting, and watercolour was the next frontier for me. However, I am very drawn to coloured pencils! I have a set of 12 Derwent Lightfast pencils now and now I am neglecting all my paints and sort of regretting all of that initial investment that is just sitting in a box! Oh dear… it is a journey just to find one’s preferred art supplies, let alone finding a style that is uniquely you. We have time! Let’s enjoy creating some beautiful things.

I just found your channel and saw your colored pencil owl, so I had to come and see what else you had out in your videos. I absolutely am in love with your Harmony piece. All the others you shared are beautiful too. Ive always worked with regular pencil and ink pens, so mostly black and white and gradients. Not schooled in art, but I do so love it. I took on pyrography, and soft soldering for jewelry, and in the last couple of years took up power wood carving and chainsaw carving. Lol, 😅 I want to try so many things! I love them all though. Most recently I am teaching myself to paint using acrylics, watercolor, and also UV/LED nail gel polish. Totally different mediums, but again, I love learning them. I've never really worked with color, so I'm looking to learn more. Thank you for sharing. I love seeing other artists processes and learning from them. Your art is beautiful.

I can see both sides of the story. On the one hand, some are driven to reproduce and/or admire a photographic like rendering, and yes it takes a lot of talent and practice to do that. Centuries ago, that was the only way of getting a close likeness and I think that's where the mindset stemmed from. But with the development of photography, it has become pointless, and you might just as well take a photograph if an accurate rendering is what you want. Having said that, I'm still hooked on trying to render something that looks like the thing I'm seeing. I don't know why - maybe I've convinced myself that the more I strive, the more I will improve, instead of relaxing and enjoying the process. I keep telling myself to produce art, not photographs, but I still keep trying to produce the photograph, even though I know I'll never be that good.

Thank you for this helpful video, especially when you spoke about your tiny pencils, as that's the problem I have with my jars/pots. Very annoying to have to tip the whole jar out to get to them. I'll look into getting a case, as I think that would work well for me. Best wishes and thanks again!❤

What pencils are you using?

I've tried Pastelmat a few times but find that not only does it eat the pencil, but it is v expensive and getting detail is difficult. I now avoid it.

I do both colored pencil and watercolor. I think I have been overly affected by the purist ideas. I need to mix them much more often and label the back of the painting that I used both. Thanks.
