Get outside with the Original Muddypaw - Made in the USA, meandering in Northern California. I've been the Original Muddypaw for lo these many years (40+!) and love getting outside for walks, day hikes, exploring, and magnet fishing. I spent decades as a dog trainer (trainer of people to train their dogs) and I love animals of all shapes and sizes ... however, I have no urgent desire to be chased by one in the woods! My goal is to bring the outdoors in for those of you who can't/don't get outside much and to keep it family-friendly. I'm also an Associate Marriage & Family Therapist, and Certified Life Coach, so you might get a few Mental Meanders thrown in for good measure. Hopefully, you'll have fun tagging along. And it Came to Pass at Donner ... | Meandering with Muddypaw
Hey! We're back! My muddy-buddies came back for another meander! Today, we meandered our way to Donner Pass again, where it's about 20 degrees cooler than the valley. We're on the opposite side of the Donner Tunnels that we did last time … this time, in Donner State Park which was named for the Donner Party, who were stranded here overwinter in 1846-1847. From the time the Donners left Illinois, 42 people (of 91) died (three died early in the trip). Be sure to check the notes and links below! Went with my daughters school class years ago. I think they were also known as snow tunnels to protect trains from snow slides. Near china wall if I recall.
That's cool they had a kid field trip there! Yep, that's the ones. China Wall is on the trail (and under the trail) ... The snow sheds were the concrete coverings and the tunnels were the bore holes through the mountain. They just call them the Donner Tunnels or the Snow Sheds. Supposedly, the wooden ones (pre-1950s) could hold up to 60 ft of snow from an avalanche. That's a lot of snow! - Thanks for the comment! - Muddypaw

Yes, in Northern California in the Sierra Nevada near the Nevada border by Reno. Where the Donner Party were stranded overwinter in 1846-1847. Lots of history in the area. Beautiful part of the state ...! (Unfortunately, there is a fire very near there today!) Thanks for the comment! - Muddypaw
My grandmother had my Dad when she was 46. She had 6 siblings die of diphtheria when they lived in s sod house.

Aww! Thank you! Manzanita Cemetery (the "2-hour speedmeander" video) was a crazy happening of a cemetery. Gold Hill cemetery is about 5-ish miles from Manzanita, but two totally different environments for the graves. If you want to see a pitiful little cemetery, check out "Goad Cemetery" (part of "Common Cemetery") in Colusa, CA. Three little lambs' headstones right on the sidewalk of a "park" that used to be a cemetery (with people still buried there!) Wow, well that's cool! I am reading about Salem right now, as a matter of fact. How weird is that? LOL. Ann and Thomas Putnam ... their oldest Annie was a primary accuser, from what I understand. It's interesting the different theories about what was going on with the "witches" -- ergot poisoning seemed to be the most likely culprit for the afflicted. Sounds reasonable to me. Lol… i missed a bunch while i was off and chasing babies!! But it’s always nice to just be around you ❤️ I definitely don’t recommend a stroller or wagon for this trail … mountain bikes would be fine
Lol! I'm glad you came! It's more fun to have a meander buddy. Wagons and strollers are a no-go on this trail for sure! At least the first part of it. If we'd made it to the actual pond, it might be different. This is actually Pioneer Express Trail that goes for miles and miles ... just happens to go by the pond. It's an equestrian trail, so no mountain bikers are supposed to be on this one. Or Cabela's wagons loaded with pumpkins. Thanks, my friend! :)

Thanks! Music is a big part of this one ... Thousands of pets ... thousands of wildlife. The lady in the link in the description is the one who created this monument - and she never even lived in Paradise. The wildlife side faces the canyon, and the pet side faces town. It's just so bittersweet... breaks my heart.
