Middle-Aged Student Pilot: White-Knuckle Landings
Almost a full session of practicing landings. 55 year old Student Pilot learning to land. The struggle is real. It is constant inputs all the way down. The videos are helpful to review and see what I was doing vs what I thought I was doing. The transition from round out to flare has been difficult. Throw in some ground effect and wind and it becomes a real challenge. STILL LEARNING, but loving the flight time. It is never too old to chase a child hood dream.

Conquering Lake Norman: Student Pilot Edition

Reviewing the videos I do get to take has been very helpful for reviewing my progress and what is actually happening vs what I think is happening. Student Pilot Landing at Lake Norman airpark. What helped me was my CFI telling me to “try not to land the plane”. That with transitioning my eyes down to the end of the runway as I crossed over my aiming point. Maintain your airspeed and don’t forget pitch for speed and throttle for altitude. To high: reduce throttle. To slow: push nose over. Keep up the good work!

    fly less steep approaches aim for the numbers instead of thousand footers, keep the speed up 65-70 and have a slightly more extended and nose up flare and try to drag it to the thousand footers, your approach at 6 minutes was good up until the point you forgot to flare

    • @MantisRacing
      @MantisRacing หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for this. Another CFI and I had a conversation after a flight and I finally grasped why / how my slow airspeed was affecting my approach. Also I realized I was trying to round out and flare at once.

    I'm 57 and just went through this over the last 3 years. Keep at it. It gets much easier. The stuff that's taking 90% of your focus now will take only 10% and you'll have enough brain space to finesse the stuff that probably seems impossible right now, like maintaining the centerline all the way to stop, touching the wheels down at your intended touchdown point, and keeping exactly the right pattern altitude and speeds on downwind, base and final. Good luck!

      Thanks for commenting. I always heard sportbikes are the closest thing to flying. I do agree with that, but sportbike riders need to imagine riding and maintaining direction where the tires have zero grip and gravity doesn't exist to hold you planted. Uphill or downhill at Road Atlanta, great..... now do it where the track disappears and all you have are the controls given to you.

    How would you compare the gsxr1000R to the ZX10R . Handling , power etc!!!

    • @MantisRacing
      @MantisRacing 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't been riding like I used to so these are quick thoughts from memory GSXR has more low and mid, Zx10 is a top end bike. ZX10 is a smoother engine. GSXR does not have a counter shaft GSXR feels smaller than the 10 ZX10 is very stable, it has the geometry for this. GSXR from the factory is more nimble, but also more prone to shake on the front. GSXR, other than the vibration is probably the better street bike. It has more torque low to mid, it turns in quicker. On the track as you get faster the rear shock has to go. Overall, I would say own the bike you like best. Both can be modified to fit the role you want.

    Once you reach 60 or so, start to pull back as you add power and continue to pull back until the stall.. otherwise you’ll gain a bunch of altitude before the stall ever happens.. once you stall, just relax pressure.. also what I like to do is pick a cloud outside if you can and use rudders to keep that cloud on the same spot to stay coordinated.. if there are no clouds, take a peek out the side glass for coordination.

  • @landen99
    @landen99 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Never stall with uncoordinated flight. One wing will stall first and drop for a spin and risk a spin stall if flight is not coordinated, if not pointing the same direction as the movement, where wind speed is uneven across the wings. Also, don't waste time creating the power on stall, so just do it already. Pitch up hard, and hold and right rudder just like normal climb out after take off except with altitude to be safe. If coordinated, the nose will drop straight down at full stall.

  • @pilotaj

    Same thing happened to me...right wing dips...I think it was because i didn't let up on right rudder used during climb.

    • @MantisRacing
      @MantisRacing 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, using rudder and correction is still a little awkward for me.

    • @landen99
      @landen99 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, too much right rudder creates uncoordinated flight. Soft stall reduces climb rate which increases angle of attack and reduces need for right rudder. Turning the yoke left to compensate for excessive right rudder increases angle of attack more on right wing to stall it out first. The easiest way to think about minimizing uncoordinated flight is to minimize the constant turning of the yoke to the left or right. Let the rudder maintain the turn or the straight flight with back pressure or trim as needed to maintain altitude.
