How to photo scan head is the most asked question in the KIRI Engine community, so I'm making this thorough workflow video covering both 3D scanning and cleaning procedures.
Keep in mind that 3D scanning was originally designed to scan static objects. So when scanning people, they will always have some level of movement regardless of how steady they can stay. Even with today's technology, it is still not quite there to expect a perfect human scan just with your smartphone. You will always end up with some clean-ups on the scan to make it perfect.

For sure is paid
I love using Kiri engine but want to try and create a 3d model of the inside of a room or number of rooms. I'd love to be able to do this using a set of photos from my Insta360 camera or video recording taken whilst walking around the rooms. I have tried to do this by uploading the equirectangular photos direct from camera and also by decomposing the equirectangular photos into six smaller photos (forward, backward, left, right, up and down). However, the results are always rubbish, the image looks like someone sneezed on the screen! Has anyone had any success with this and if so, what was your workflow?
Bought Trnio 3D Scanner app for my iPhone in 2017 - was SO annoyed when they've ended the "project" - I've paid for Kiri today - don't you dare go anywhere! Lol!!! ♥
As I just stumbled upon the topic of 3D/LiDAR scanning via Reddit, I do have a technical question. I may want to use this tech to map out the induction-charging-pad underneath the center console of my car, which would otherwise be difficult to accurately measure with a tape as it's a tight space, but can an app such as 'Kiri' help in that regard or would this require a more open space to properly scan objects/spaces?
Hi avon! Thanks for the question, this sounds like a fun project! The short answer is yes, you can use KIRI Engine to map out the charging pad underneath your car for measurement. But to use KIRI Engine, you need to take photos around the area you'd like to 3D scan, so if the room is narrow and you can't take clear images of the entire area, then you do need to find some ways so you can take enough clear photos at different angles. One other thing is that the 3D model directly from photo scan won't have real-world scale, but that's an easy fix in 3D software like Fusion 360, I made another tutorial video on how to scale the 3D scan, here you go: th-cam.com/users/shortsyYmTl-E963E?si=UOxBnfwMg818biXx
Hello, Can I use the camera by holding it still and rotating the object on the table (it may be motorized) without taking individual photographs, video or lidar scanning? I'm a new user and couldn't find the option. I am researching. Maybe it would be much easier for me
Hey olgaykeskin! Thanks for the question! For the scan mode specifically mentioned in this video - Feautreless Object Scan mode, you can't use a turntable, you must take the video around the object without the object moving. But for other modes like Photo Scan mode, you can use a turntable like you described, just remember to turn on the "Auto Object Masking" toggle at the uploading page before you upload the photoset for processing
If take a photo using the 0.5 mode wont will be better?
0.5 mode won't make too much difference in this case :)
Polycount rocks. Kiri is way way behind
this beats polycam hands down, and its free?? wtf, is there any payments required for any exports, or 100% free? What about the future?
Hey SwipeLess, thanks for the comment haha :) Well what I meant in the video is that everything we used for this head scan is 100% free, but other cool features in KIRI Engine that you might be interested at could require you to have a Pro account, but which is still a lot cheaper than other alternatives on the market :)
Trying it out now. I think your pro tier is reasonably priced. nice job!
Thank you partimehuman :) Glad you feel this way, please feel free to reply if you have any questions while trying out the app :)
Is there a way to add a lidar support to 3dgs? Now I am using Scaniverse because there is support for lidar.
Hi anttiv! I don't want to speak for Scaniverse, but just a fun fact for Scaniverse's Splat scan, it doesn't actually use your LiDAR at all even if you have one on your iPhone Pro. Only the mesh scan in Scaniverse supports LiDAR :) And to your question, Adding LiDAR support to 3DGS isn't in our top priority list because KIRI Engine's mission is to bring 3D Scanning to more people
Does Kiri engine exports the textures along with the OBJ?
Hey Mircea! Yes definitely! When you export the OBJ file, you will find the texture files along in the folder
@@KIRI_Engine_App Cool! Thanks!
@@KIRI_Engine_App Another question: can I upload a video on your website and have generate a mesh (with texture) from that? Do you use Neurangelo on your website? Now I see that only photos can be uploaded.
@@MirceaGoia Thanks for the question Mircea!! Depends on the scanning mode you use, for example if you use photo mode, then you can only upload photosets on the website and we use Photogrammetry algorithm to process the photosets; but if you use Featureless Object mode, we will ask you to upload a video instead of photos and we use a improved version of Neuralangelo for Featureless Object mode
Hey so I'm new to Kiri and I've been doing a couple renders for a cosplay mask I'm doing. In the app, it appears that my 3D model is nice and smooth, and appears to be a fantastic 3D model. But when I export it and load it into any type of software, it's SUPER bumpy and textured unlike the model within the Kiri app. What exactly could be causing this?
How do mesh scale in android phone?
Hi AM_19! Thanks for the comment, but I don't think I understand your question :( If you meant if you could do scaling in Android phone, unfortunately the answer is no for now, you will have to export the 3D scan to 3D software like fusion360 to do the scaling like what I showed in this short video
@KIRI_Engine_App Thanks!
I don't think the Mesh is created from 3DGS, but through Photogrammetry, then saved together with the splat data. Gaussian Splatting is a Rendering technique, no mesh is involved other than splats.
I really love the app and I hope I can get it working again. But for some reason, it logged me out and no matter what I do I can’t get back in. I’m on the right iOS account for sure because it shows my subscription active in my subscriptions. But when I login with my Apple ID it logs into an account with no unlocked sub features. Pretty frustrating. But to be honest, I’m not certain I can even use your app for what I needed it for. The location which I wanted to scan is quite remote. I don’t have any phone service there. Is there a workaround for scanning without any service?
hey derfmode!! OMG, I"m so sorry to hear about your frustrating story about not being to log in :( Please send an email to our tech support at contact@kiri-innov.com, Chris behind the email will make sure to reply within 24hours. And to your other question about remote location. Yes you can still use KIRI Engine, just use your phone's native camera app to take photosets and videos like you'd do in KIRI Engine and upload those photos and videos through KIRI Engine whenever your phone is back on service
Hi! Awesome product but I would like to know if Kiri Engine can scan a full human body and which method to use to scan a full human body? Thanks!
Hey dazrelixs! Thanks for the question! I actually made a tutorial video for scanning human head, the same methodology can also be used for scanning a full human body, hope it can help :) th-cam.com/video/bqN5IWSm2zE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=wDzTRAyEqFo0gfTu

I don't plan to do this for anything human, but a massive help nevertheless!
Woah, I'm so glad this video helped :DDDD Please feel free to let me know if you run into any questions
Hi there, i love this app and its working fine withe really good results i see on scanned busts. I am wondering that the scan results in combination with a turn table are disapointing, mostly trash. I used a slow speed and a fixed position of my cell phone /camera to scan the rotating object. Is there a limitation is this use case?
Hi Misterbooche! Thanks for the comment! Yes, there are ways to use a turntable for KIRI Engine: 1. Only use a turntable for Photo Scan mode 2. In the photo-taking page, there is a dedicated turntable mode (aka. timer mode), it's the third tab next to the auto-capture mode tab. 3. You don't have to use the turntable mode during photo-taking, but if you didn't use the turntable mode, make sure to turn on the Auto Object Masking switch located in the photo uploading page. Hope it helps, booche :) Let me know how it goes
i know you said Photo Scan is the best for 3D scanning method for Head Scan. But what about other method from the pro version like Featureless Object San or 3DGS scan?
Good question daz! Because I wanted to make a tutorial video that utilizes our free features, I didn't mention Featureless Object Scann too much. But you are right, Featureless Object Scan can handle the slight movement much better than the photo scan. So Featureless Object Scan would also be a good choice for head scan
@@KIRI_Engine_App answer too late (joking, quite fast answer), i just pay for the kiri engine pro hahahaha...loving it...

Which mode is the best if I’m wanting to bring an object into Fusion 3d to replicate a part or create a part off my scan? I used lidar the other day but when I brought it into fusion 360 it did not show the same level of detail that my image in Kiri Engine had.
I need one please😊

Thanks so much for your new video, Jack!
My pleasure Paul :), glad you like it
Good thing you don't mention the monthly plan.... Way too expensive.
Hey Santiano, thanks for the comment! We do need to have a business model to keep the product alive. But if you compare KIRI Engine's monthly plan with other apps that offer similar features, KIRI Engine stands as the most affordable option
@@KIRI_Engine_App I get that you have server costs. But for me 18$ is a bit much if I'm only going to scan 4 faces (My family). 18$ vs 4$ is a big difference when you can't do 80$ all at once. If the was 10$ or closer to that, it would be a lot easier to swallow. Especially since the people paying monthly isn't where you get most of yiur income. It's mostly hobbiests, or people like me who only need a very few scans 🙂 But again, I get you have server costs, just too bad I won't be able to use the program. Since I don't think 100 pictures will be enough. I want to scan my families heads in so that in the future I can 3D scan their heads and make bronze statues or something like that. And want the best possible quality 🙂
This app is really amazing. Can you please make a tutorial on how to scan the bottom of a model as well as the top in one go?
Hey Pete! That's a great idea. For now you can check the point at 1 minute 12 seconds in this video: th-cam.com/video/5NzVTKksG1U/w-d-xo.html It covers using our 'auto mask' feature to capture the bottom. Hope it helps :)
Great suggestion! Personally, to achieve an even better level, I use the scan as a base mesh to retopolize in Blender and transfer the textures with image bake. In addition to having a clean mesh true to the scan it is optimized for both scans and renderings and animations. Definitely a lot more work than 10 minutes but the result is amazing. I would like to see in the app preview the clay version of the mesh and not just the textured one, it would help a lot to see if the scan actually came out well.
Hi Dario! Thank you so much for the comment! Yeah, I've seen users doing retopology and texture baking from the base model, the process was brutal! But to answer your suggestion :) The reason why we don't have a clay version preview in KIRI Engine is that the 3D model we use for preview is a low-poly version of the actual model saved on the server. So there is no point for users to see the model preview in clay version because it will have far less detail than the actual model you download from our server anyways.
The result of LiDAR scan give me a .USDZ file. Can i export the Lidar Scan result to OBJ or STL?
You can actually export the LiDAR scan in both USDZ and OBJ formats from KIRI Engine :) Please send us an email at contact@kiri-innov.com if you don't know where to find the OBJ file :)
You are so awesome, I love your energy!
Thank you so much Adrian!! More videos are coming up :D
Here's the only question I have: Once you have your scan perfect, how do you scale it correctly to be your actual head dimensions? I'm assuming just use calipers and measure your x/y/z and then scale to those measurements, yeah?
yea, you have to rescale it...
@@xingyechrishu6382 of course you have to rescale it, that wasn't the question.
@@_Mourning_ oh, for example, if you measure the length between eyeballs in real life, and then go to 3d software and rescale the same place to real, the 3 dimensions will enlarge or shrink simultaneously. That's how I do it...
Hey Mourning! Yes, this is exactly the way to scale it :)
I would like to see a mesh view of our scan directly in the app if possible :) it would be great. Indeed, I worked on some scans during the holidays and i had to ask a friend to open my file on his computer to see the wireframe & full mesh. Thx for the work
Hi G! Thanks for the comment, let me answer to this: So the reason why we don't have a mesh view in the app is because the 3D model you are seeing the KIRI Engine is a low-poly version from the actual raw 3D model saved in our server (most of the phones will crash if we render the full 3D model on the phone), therefore showing the mesh in KIRI Engine preview is kind of useless because when you download the model it will be the higher poly version of the previous on the app.
@@KIRI_Engine_App Ok, thanks a lot !
Nice tutorial!
Thanks mrfunnysheep!!
4:56 didn't see that there was a switch... strange design choice to make the switch invisible in the off state...
Thanks for the comment Robert :) KIRI Engine is a product that we've poured our hearts into, so it means we value the design as much as the actual functionality. So I apologize if the design made you feel a little confused, but we just thought this way would make the product a little bit "soul-ful" :P
@@KIRI_Engine_App I understand that you put your soul and even lives into that wonderful product. But there are not only young people out there who would like to keep up with tech, there are also old people like me. A lot has been done when it comes to accessibility, things that are essential for me. But with your app - as fascinating as it may be - I only see a huge step towards an attitude that is very much along the line of "let's get rid of the old people". I really do not understand why you ignore all those important achievements on the accessibility sector. Why HIDE a switch? Why??? It is nothing else but a bad decision and has nothing to do with layout or style or soul. Unless handicaps are what you promote as the soul of your web app. - I like Kiri. But I would want to like it more. Things like these are keeping me from that... Please rethink!
Great insights! This video makes photo scanning for 3D printing simple and easy to follow. Super helpful workflow guide! 💥
thank you so much!!! I love this video too!
Great video and tips! I was just needing this for scanning my head, to use it in a cosplay helmet. Greetings from Amsterdam!
Woah, we have perfect timing then :D Have fun with the project!!!
But one thing I didn't show though, was how to scale the head model. You know how to do that right? For example, you can use Fusion 360 to scale the model using point-to-point measurement

Perhaps you should make a crowdsourced digital twin of the planet that allows users of the Kiri app to contribute (and get a Kiri cryptocoin or something). It could even compete with Google Maps/street view and be used in all sorts of other applications. And then you can sell it for billions and relax by playing GTA Earth!
Does the app have Neuralangelo now?
Actually it does! The Featureless Object Scan mode in KIRI Engine is exactly the commercialized version of Neuralangelo
Is there support for gaussian splat 3D modeling and point cloud editing?
Yup, we've had 3DGS scanning and editing for a long time :) Check out this video: th-cam.com/video/XDAFd_Mqn4M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HgaqqTVGJ4j_iBMc
