Swami explains Hard problem Consciousness | David Chalmers | SriRamakrihna | Modern Philosophy
Hard problem of consciousness is a term coined by Australian philosopher David Chalmers, it points to the millennia old Upanishadic question of how a body made of matter can have an inner life. We the Sensient beings can feel two worlds one the external and the other is internal, and also both are supported by a feeling of "1st person experience", that makes us know "how does it feel to be me". Body of Jeeva is nothing but matter, fundamentally same with any other inert matter present in the world, still how one can feel the presence of a 1st person experience and other can't, in simpler word one is conscious the other is not, how ? This question is a milestone question tabled recently by the Australian Philosopher David Chalmers and with that an age old Indic question made a come back.
Revered Swami Sarvapriyananda ji maharaj tables the question, with a beautiful explanation and reference to old Vedantic texts, the lecture leaves the listener wondering about how actually could the body instead of being inert in nature can have consciousness. This tempts one to hypothesize that consciousness could be ever present in the universe like a fundamental matter, than can only work through the brains of the sentient beings. Like many things we can't really perceive through our senses, it could be one such. Or may be it is indeed our connection with the omnipresent, omnipotent creator, who is believed to have created the universe.
Swami Sarvapriyananda (pre-monastic name Biswarup Mitra) is a Hindu monk (sannyasi) belonging to the Ramakrishna Order. He is the current resident Swami and head of the Vedanta Society of New York, a position he has been serving since January 2017.
The Ramakrishna Order (Bengali: রামকৃষ্ণ সংঘ) is the monastic lineage that was founded by Ramakrishna Paramhansa, when he gave the ochre cloth of renunciation to twelve of his close disciples, in January 1886 at the Cossipore House.
The Ramakrishna Order should not be confused with the Ramakrishna Math, which is the legal entity that trains young monks and directs the spiritual duties of the Swamis of the Order. There is also a parallel organization, the Ramakrishna Mission, which performs the charitable work including, orphanages, hospitals, clinics, primary schools, high schools, colleges, and universities - as well as disaster relief and economic development in villages.
Ramakrishna also called Ramakrishna Paramahansa (Bengali: রামকৃষ্ণ পরমহংস, romanized: Ramôkṛṣṇo Pôromohôṅso; pronounced [ramɔkriʂno pɔromoɦɔŋʃo],born Ramakrishna Chattopadhay,[2][3][4] was an Indian Hindu mystic. He was a devotee of the goddess Kali, but adhered to various religious practices from the Hindu traditions of Vaishnavism, Tantric Shaktism, and Advaita Vedanta, as well as Christianity and Islam. He advocated the essential unity of religions and proclaimed that world religions are "so many paths to reach one and the same goal". #ramakrishna #saradadevi #Swamivivekenanda #SwamiSarvapriyananda

It's not that there isn't free will. It's much worse than that. There is no one who exists that could even have free will. All the feelings and thoughts that arise within the mind/ body come from an unknown place, for unknown reasons, and without anyone's consent. The ego is a mistake in understanding. You never existed as the source of anything. You exist ONLY as a conduit for everything.

“When I first started practicing Buddhism I believed the Buddha didn’t ever have any negative mental formations, he transformed everything. Now I see it differently; I see that the Buddha had those emotions but he didn't let them invade and take over his mind, he knew how to take care of his grief, take care of his anger, and that is enlightenment. Thay said if you know how to suffer you suffer less, so there's an art of suffering. When we learn how to take care of that suffering with mindfulness then wonderful things can happen, new possibilities that we didn't see before.”
What Is the difference between Joy and Happiness? Joy is like a thirsty traveller seeing a pool of clear, clean and fresh water. Happiness is the quenching of the thirst. Joy can also be compared to a hungry person who f i nds a nice restaurant and happiness is the fulf i lling of his hunger.
Total nonsense. Uf the universe is denied, wverything else js also denied including Advaita vedanta.
No one's denying Brahman though
The "Falsity" in Advaita Vedanta: Clearing Misconceptions A common critique of Advaita Vedanta is: "If everything is false in Advaita, then Advaitic knowledge, teachings, and liberation must also be false." To this, Advaita gives a clear and profound response: Yes, they are false-but only in the relative sense. Let me explain with an analogy. The Rope and Snake Analogy Imagine mistaking a rope in dim light for a snake. This illusion creates fear and panic. When someone points out that it’s not a snake but a rope, your fear disappears. Now, here's the question: Was the "snake's slithering away" true or false? Vidyaranya explains this beautifully: "Rajju Sarpa Visarpanam"-the slithering away of the snake is also false. Why? Because there was never a real snake to begin with. When you realize it was only ever a rope, the dismissal of the snake is also part of the illusion. What remains real throughout is the rope. Applying This to Advaita's Teaching Similarly, in Advaita, your so-called bondage-the belief that you are a limited being caught in the cycle of birth, death, and suffering-is like the snake. It arises due to Avidya (ignorance). When Vidya (knowledge) comes, this false bondage is dismissed. But just as the snake never truly existed, your bondage was never real. So, is liberation (Moksha) false? Yes, it is false in the same way that the dismissal of the snake is false. You were never bound to begin with. As pure consciousness (Atman), you are, and always have been, free. The Function of False Knowledge Critics may ask: "If knowledge is false, what is the point of it?" The answer lies in its practical utility. Just as you use a thorn to remove another thorn, knowledge operates within the realm of illusion (Maya) to dispel ignorance, which is also within Maya. Once ignorance is removed, knowledge too is transcended. But this "false" knowledge works-it is enough to dismiss ignorance and reveal your true nature as pure consciousness. The Ultimate Truth in Advaita What does Advaita reveal as the final truth? This is expressed in Gaudapada’s Mandukya Karika: "There is no creation, no dissolution, no bondage, no seeker, no liberation. This is the ultimate truth." What does this mean? It means that as pure consciousness (Brahman), you were never created, never bound, and never needed liberation. The universe, samsara, bondage, and even spiritual disciplines are part of the dream-like illusion of Maya. The realization Aham Brahmasmi ("I am Brahman") reveals that you are, and always have been, eternal, infinite, and free. The Importance of Conviction Now, some of us may intellectually grasp this truth but still doubt: "Maybe I am not the body-mind complex, and maybe I am pure consciousness." This doubt must be replaced with unwavering conviction. As a verse says: देहात्मज्ञानवत् ज्ञानं देहात्मज्ञानवद् भवेत्। आत्मनैव भवेदस्य सन्निच्छन्नपि मुच्यते।। Transliteration: Dehātma-jñānavat jñānaṃ dehātma-jñānavad bhavet, Ātmanaiva bhaved asya sannicchann api mucyate. “With the same conviction you now have that you are the body-mind, if you can realize with equal certainty that you are pure consciousness, even if you don’t seek liberation, you will be liberated.” The key is to shift your identification from the body-mind to your true nature as Sat-Chit-Ananda-existence, consciousness, and bliss. Conclusion The snake didn’t slither away-it was never there to begin with. Similarly, your bondage doesn’t "go away" because it was never real. You simply realize that you were always the infinite, eternal rope of pure consciousness. This realization is liberation. This is Advaita Vedanta.
False ignorance is dismissed by false knowledge, false bondage is cleared up by the false liberation and you realise you are always liberated. This is Advaita's position
Exactly what I experienced, the ocean and wave analogy is made just for a mind to be understood but the fact is there is no wave only ocean.

So correct ❤
Highly complex philosophy explained brilliantly by Sri Sarvapriyananda 🙏
In case of pot and clay, either in form of pot or clay, both are gross and so have form. But in case of world and brahman, world is gross but brahman is not gross, not perceived. So it is difficult to believe that gross world is non perceivable brahman.
Pl zoom and zoom the universe until the quantum level, and it is nothing but consciousness. Bio centrism.
Brahman is characteristic not a thing
@MM-dh3wr Brahman is consciousness, and it doesn't have physical dimensions like space. It is only true as it explains this universe. No physical thing is real if it is without boundaries like space as per the conventional physics, and quantum physics explains that local realism is not real, but consciousness is real. It is only real.
You don't have to believe it because you are THAT.
An example can be stretched only so much. Beyond that it will lead to foolish conclusion. The point here is, clay is that from which pot is made. Pot does not have an independent existence, but clay does. So, when you see the pot, you are actually 'seeing' only clay, but misidentified as pot (since pot has only fleeting existence).
Marvellous
🙏🙏🙏🙏
It is definitely possible and it is simple
🙏🏻
Pranam to Sri Thakurji, Maa Sarada, Swamiji and you all🌺🙏🌹
