      Yeah man, this was my first time there and didn't really know what to expect. My wife was a little freaked out at first with the water crossings and just how long it took to complete the trail, so I was just trying to get through it. Now that we did it once she is wanting to do more. She said now she knows what to expect and actually started buying things to make our outings a little more comfortable. • @southpaw_reels
      @southpaw_reels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guessing you are referring to the white liner that fits the hatch hole, unfortunately you would have to purchase the liner separately. They run about $70 +/-. That being said, once you put the liner in the 5gal. bucket fits in it very well. I do not recommend just putting the 5gal. bucket in the hatch opening without the liner only because you run the risk of taking waves or whatever over the bow and having water fill your hull. Hope that helps answer your question.

    • @southpaw_reels
      @southpaw_reels 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bill. The main line is 3 strand 1/4" cotton rope. Lots of guys run #8 loctite also. I had the 1/4" so I used it. The #8 does take up a little less room in the 5 gal. bucket though. I run 600' of line, baits are spaced about 10' apart. I feel 600' is manageable. I've ran 1200' and it is easy to run but storing it on the kayak, laying it out and picking it up are a chore. I do find crabbing out of the yak more relaxing and enjoyable, but that's just me. If you have any further questions about setup or actually crabbing feel free to give me a shout and I'll do my best to answer ya. Best of luck.

    Good afternoon Jon, the auto dipper you have is exactly what I need. Could you please contact me? This is my second year crabbing and I’ve learned a whole lot for a lot of people on the Chesapeake. I would love to model my auto dipper after yours. If you could take pictures and send them to me that would be great. I’m on Facebook Leroy Hyson. leroyhyson22@aol.com

      Hi Leroy, just seeing this. I'll see if I can get some shots of it for you. I had my cousin's ex-husband weld it up for me.

    I want to build a snow plow for my HG P407. Do you have any vids or threads detailing the making of your setup?

    • @southpaw_reels
      @southpaw_reels 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kevin, unfortunately I don't. I built it out of scraps that I had laying around. The blade is actually a piece of Lexan that I heated with a torch and bent. The mount on the truck consist of a 1/2" piece of angle aluminum cut and drilled to bolt to the front bumper mount and then I cut a 3/8" or so piece off of a 2"X2" square stock of aluminum to make the drop that holds the mounting arms coming from the plow. The mounting arms are cut from solid stock aluminum that is about 1/4" square and bolted to the plow using 1/2" angle aluminum that was cut 1/2" long. I can send you pics if you like, but the whole thing really needs to be redesigned and needs to be stronger. That's a project for another day.

      @@southpaw_reels That's ok. I was just curious because I love watching build vids. I do a lot of 3d modeling and design, so I will come up with some ideas once my truck arrives tomorrow. Thanks for the reply.

      Hey Jack - I actually built that with the help of my cousin. It's made from all aluminum, I based the design off of other auto dippers that I saw online and he welded it all together. The opening is 24x24 and the net was custom made by a local net maker.

    Awesome setup!!! I bet they enjoyed themselves. What kind of dipper is that? That would really work perfectly on my boat in Va. Also, how long of a trotline are you using? I can only use up to 300ft.

      Thanks Mike B. It was a fun day for sure. I actually built that with the help of my cousin. It's made from all aluminum, I based the design off of other auto dippers that I saw online and he welded it all together. The opening is 24x24 and the net was custom made by a local net maker. I believe that line is 1000'. I have an MD commercial crabbing license and usually run anywhere from 1000' to 3000' so the dipper comes in handy when not takeing family and friends out for a day of fun.

      Awesome, might you be interested in building another? Of course I would be willing to pay. Just don't have the resources or time to do one myself. And I haven't seen on that can fit into a rod holder. I may not be looking in the right places. I'm down here in Va.

    • @southpaw_reels
      @southpaw_reels 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd love to be able to tell you yes, but it was made with all scrap aluminum, which I only have a few small pieces left and my cousin is the one who actually welded it all together for me. I have zero aluminum welding skills. I'd be more than happy to give you all the measurements if you have access to the aluminum and someone that can weld it up for you.

      Sorry for the late response Mark....I thought I had responded already but it doesn't look that way. Any ways, Thanks. This line is set up for razor clam and that was the bait. I have another line set up for chicken necks for later in the season.

      +jon wittman Any tips for a beginner who doesnt have a boat? i've lived in MD all my life but never been crabbing. i live about 20 min from the Patuxent and about 45 min from the Potomac and Chesapeake

    • @southpaw_reels
      @southpaw_reels 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quickest and easiest thing for you to do since you are just getting started would be to go to a local bait shop in your area and see if they could point you to a good local spot to hand line some crabs. Hand lining is where you tie a piece of chicken neck onto a line and toss it off of a pier (usually). When a crab swims by and picks up the chicken the line will go tight, usually pulling at a slight angle. You then slowly pull the line up and when you can see the crab you scoop it up in a crab net. Some bait stores may sell premade hand line rigs and chicken necks. Sometimes you can also find chicken necks at your local grocery store. Crabbing season in MD. doesn't start till around April 15 and the crabs will take some time to make their way up north from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. Around my area, we don't start seeing decent numbers till May or so. Make sure to check with the local bait shop for best times in your area. Best of Luck.

      Yes, I am enjoying it a lot. I have been doing quite a bit of flounder fishing in it lately. I does have disadvantages in rough waters compared to a sit on top, but I am working out the bugs. All the Best!
