    Great work as usual I cannot recommend enough that you buy a 1 or 2 tonne mini digger, even a micro digger, some about 7 to 10 years old. You would make great use out of it and sell it for the same money you bought it for in a couple of years.

      Thanks for that, I’ve just research them and they look great. Surprisingly they are even approved for some NZ buildings (we have a very prescriptive building code). Looks like they’re only suitable for ‘light’ buildings in NZ, and I’ll be using some ‘heavy’ materials in the construction so wouldn’t pass code without a chartered engineers approval (and that’s not a cost I’m happy to add to the project!)

    As an American, can you explain why you used wooden piles as opposed to formed concrete like sonotubes? As always love your videos!

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely. Wooden piles are readily available in NZ and have been used in house construction for over 150 years here, initially due to the abundance of timber. Formed concrete piles are acceptable to NZ building code, but I preferred timber for this particular project. The junction between pile and bearer can be engineered to be particularly strong with a timber to timber connection (more in that in the next episode) and I like that timber is more elastic than concrete when subject to earthquake loading. Concrete piles would've been fine, but timber is easier to work and the crawl space will be easier to enclose in a manner that will enhance the building aesthetic (again, will become clearer in future episodes). You could argue that the use of timber would have less of an environmental impact than concrete, but with the chemicals these piles are pumped with I'm not so sure!

    Quick question, why wooden piles not just pour, concrete pile would last for ever. Why not coat the piles with bitchumin for longer life

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good question, and I'll cover more of the reasoning in the next episode. Concrete would have been perfectly acceptable to NZ building code, however I prefer the flexibility of timber (earthquake prone country) and I think the junction between the pile and the bearer/subfloor can be engineering to be stronger using timber to timber junctions. The wooden piles are chemically treated on our 'H' scale to a very high level, H4, meaning they have a guaranteed durability IN WET GROUND of a minimum 50 years as required by our building code. Coating them further wouldn't improve the resistance, the chemicals used in the treatment are nasty but effective!

    • @GaetanoCostanza
      @GaetanoCostanza 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      3:09 Yes I do understand stand but if in fifty years you wanted to replace them having concrete post would be easier as all you would need to do is to support the frame replaced the post or beam etc never need to try dig out wooden post that will go rotten.

    Greetings Dan, I have been following along on your recent projects not so much for instructional purposes but for motivational inspiration ! I am in month five of building a shop/garage solo also.Like your project the rear of the building is 88" up from the footing to the decking, I have a 8' wide crawl space for storage with a wood subfloor and built a retaining wall to hold about 60 tons of stone to pour a 22' slab. I subbed out the flat work but have set about 900 block and have built the walls 10' and roof 2x10x14' rafters and just finished putting the metal roof on yesterday solo. It has been an unusually hot and damp summer here in the southern U.S. Every step seems to be such a trade off working alone I have clamps everywhere ! I am 67 years old and am pretty sure this will be my last project of this size so am determined to finish it by myself but as I stated earlier it helps to see fellow people going thru the same process with a smile on there face and good cheer in there heart! I live on a golf course with a beautiful view but would be happy to trade locations with you! Best of luck with your project. Btw I am also named Dan!

      @tinusg 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In my climate these posts will be fully rotten before the 10 year mark. I hope he clarifies this decision in the next video. He has proven to be very meticulous so far.

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I will certainly add further clarification in the next episode. Here in NZ we are fortunate (unfortunate?) that CCA treatment of timber hasn't been banned, so these posts have a guaranteed durability of over 50 years in wet ground.

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In situ concrete formed posts would've been okay, and are acceptable to NZ building code, but a couple of things steer me away from using them in this application. A couple of the piles are quite far out of the ground, and concrete doesn't have very good resistance to shear or tensile forces. Living as I do in an earthquake prone country, the elasticity of timber really appeals. Also I can get a simple engineered connection between the post and bearer using a timber to timber junction. These timber piles are chemically treated to have a guaranteed durability of over 50 years in wet ground so I'm not concerned about rotting or insect attack. I'm going to use your suggested technique on the other side of the barn structure, but I'll explain why the different approaches in the relevant episode to come.

    When it comes to digging out large stumps with deep root systems which are like pulling Wisdom Teeth, I like to use a long heavy steel pry bar where one end is a point and the other end like a large chisel. I use the Chisel to dig down and chop many hard to reach root. Save less digging to clear a spot for the chainsaw which dulls the chain badly. Been doing it that way for decades. 👌

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That’s actually a great idea! That said, I didn’t have very many tools on location and when I come to reuse the bands they would’ve needed cutting anyway. Like the idea of using heat though.

      It works surprisingly well. I’m hoping to get 2-3 years of use out of it before I’m ready to build a stone bridge.

    Hello sir what computer software do you use for design?

      Hello, I’m using Sketchup for my design work.

    Dear me Dan that's some sketchy cutting technique at 10:36. One slip and you won't be around to produce any more videos for us. The femoral artery is not recommended for use as a workbench, especially using a power saw! 😳

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Living on the edge!😬 Joking aside, honestly I’m surprised you’re the only one to comment. When I was reviewing the footage it did seem a little on the dangerous side (especially with a blunt blade) so rest assured I’ll be making up some saw horses for the construction. 👍

      @Terrythemaker it’s all happening right now! I’ve spent the last few days removing tree stumps and begun digging the foundations. Juggling the build around work commitments and dodging rain showers, but progress is being made. Back on the job today with some more spade work 😅

    Hi Dan, if this was on levelish ground it would still be an amazing build but having to deal with that gradient on top of everything else makes this very exciting build 😊 looking forward to seeing it all.

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You’re right about the gradient, certainly adds to the complexity of the job! I’ve purposely not finished off the design drawings until I’ve got all the area prepared and properly measured. Already I can see some changes needed to fit in with the contours. All which means more work but a better looking structure when it’s finished 😀

    love your channel mate! very refreshing to see your style of video in the oversaturated market of 'quick fix' building videos. super excited for this project! also would love to know what general area this property is as the geography is very perculiar

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you kindly 🙏 quick fix and move on just isn’t my style. It does make it challenging to grow the channel as the YT algorithm really needs regular uploads and short-ish content to get noticed, but I’m not prepared to lower my standards or change my projects for the sake of channel growth. The channel is about the projects I’m doing which I enjoy sharing, rather than making up projects just for content. The YT algorithm will also dislike that I’m not based on a single skill set, so you’re going to get a multitude of projects from landscaping, building, car restoration, cabinet making, metal fabrication, etc. Given time I’m sure the channel will grow based on its own merits😀. The way I see it I’m already reaching more people each week than I do as a teacher, so based on that metric it’s already a roaring success! I’m in the Wellington region of New Zealand, the hilly terrain being synonymous with the islands seismic activity.
