Just one of the locals of Honolulu who turned into a bus enthusiast due to resurfaced childhood memories. Who knows, maybe one day I might travel to the neighbor islands just to film other transit buses.

[Honolulu County, HI] TheBus 2010 New Flyer DE60LFR #171
09/30/2016: Out of the many Kalihi DE60LFRs that I’ve rode on during these countless times; this one is probably one of those units where its battery system is starting to wear down little by little. A little maintenance on that shouldn’t hurt.
Powertrain: Cummins ISL9-330 (8.9 liters, EPA 2010 Cert.) + GM & Allison H50EP (Panasonic NiMH battery, DPIM2, ESS2, Gen 4, infinite variable, automatic) combo.

09/30/2016: There are some rough roads in Honolulu that will beat up the buses over time, and there are some somewhat new Gillig Advantages with worn out shock absorbers. This short recording is the result of the two factors mixing together to make for a bouncy ride and further weakening of its integrity. Powertrain: Cummins ISL9-280 (8.9 liters, EPA 2010 Cert.) Voith 864.5 (DIWA.5, 4-speed, au...

09/02/2016: With the H-1 freeway having minimal traffic due to preparations for Hurricane Lester, it was a perfect opportunity to see this unit untethered by the slow-down. This one performed very well and this overall trek is considered to be one of my favorites of the year. The red tape that is blocking the rear doors was a temporary last-minute job from the maintenance team - a minor dink in...

08/19/2016: One of the Pearl City Division XD60s came in at the Alapa’i Transit Center at the time, so I decided to take a shot on the opportunity. It was not too bad of a ride on the Route 101 trek to Ewa Gentry in this “next generation” bus. Even though the interior design looks nice and modern for the time being, all the minor rattling can call for some better reinforcing of the materials. M...

08/15/2016: It seems that as the years go by, some of these buses equipped with the EPA 2004 Emissions-Certified Cummins ISL are beginning to develop an “exhaust whistle”. I’m not so sure if this is either just a feature, or if it is an indication that the unit needs maintenance on the exhaust system as soon as possible. This unit is just one of the few 500s that have them. Inside, the whistle ...

08/09/2016: Felt like making an exploratory video for the Route 6 bound for Woodlawn, just for the sake of seeing how this one maneuvers through the narrow roadway. This one has an audible turbo whistle. Powertrain: Cummins ISL-280 (8.9 liters, EPA 2004 Cert.) Allison B400R (WTEC III, 5-speed, automatic) combo.

08/08/2016: This is a random survey run for one of the P.M. express routes, this one being on Route 84 bound for Mililani. This one would’ve sound good if it wasn’t for the buzzing of the HVAC system. The performance on this one ranges from fair to alright. Good on the H-1, but it runs similarly like the old 1997-1998 Gillig Phantoms on the H-2 (if the auto transmission was never touched). I’m ...

07/25/2016: This is another survey run on the Route 81, featuring an LED-orange signage demo Phantom. This one is probably one of my favorites due to its aesthetics in terms of color. I really like how the LED-orange matches with the orange of the earth-tone color theme. Performance-wise, this bus runs well and sounds really good. Powertrain: Cummins ISM-280 (10.8 liters, EPA 1998 Cert.) Voith ...

04/18/2018: As proof that I’m still breathing, here’s an unexpected morning catch on one of the BYD ebus-12, or the K9M (with the M designated for U.S. and Canadian bus markets). First impression-wise, I’m not feeling too confident on a bus where its individual parts were potentially made in China, then shipped to the company’s California plant for assembly. While the interior looks nice and co...

07/12/2016: It’s time to explore Route 98. I think testing one of the Kalihi-base Phantoms will do for this one. While this unit runs fairly nicely, most, if not all of said Phantoms seem to struggle on the Interstate H-2 due to the inclines. This one is no exception. I’m definitely going to have to see more Phantoms taking on this route. Powertrain: Cummins M11-280E (CELECT, 10.8 liters, EPA 1...

06/09/2016: It’s a simple ride on one of the first-generation hybrid artics. Even though it runs fine this time, there’s only one thing that bugged me about this one - I saw this unit break down thrice during a two week span somewhere in the autumn of 2016 (twice in the same week). Powertrain: Caterpillar C9-330 (8.8 liters, EPA 2004 Cert.) GM & Allison EP50 (Panasonic NiMH battery, DPIM1, ESS1...

07/16/2016: Decided to take this one in a hurry. There’s some slight belt screeching on the accelerations, but other then that, the bus ran just as fine. After one or two months passed by, the apparent squealing was worse. Sounds like this one could’ve either used a new engine belt or some work on the transmission at the time. I’m very satisfied at how this ran so far. The guy behind the wheel makes this bus work, and I love it. Powertrain: Cummins M11-280E (CELECT, 10.8 liters, EPA 1998 Cert.) 07/04/2016: I was curious to see what the mauka (mountain) route of Makiki looked like. It’s also been too long since I filmed these micro-Phantoms. Sounds like a good agenda for Independence Day. As much as I appreciate the scenic view of downtown and the likes, I heard of some not-so-good anecdotes/news on what Tantalus was like in the past (and maybe as-of-recent). This route is a very local...

I totally remember this bus!
Wow, that is interesting. Sucks that it retired.
It looks so nice from the video when it was brand new but unfortunately, it doesn’t look as nice anymore.
That’s super EPIC!

Holy crap that driver was hauling ass!! 2 of these Partas Ex-TheBus 1994 Phantoms came up for sale on Craigslist this year.

@Alika Valdez Thank you for that update :) I will write this on the CPTDB Wiki.

Sounds like a devil. Kind of. Maybe 50%.
Are you going to upload more videos? It's been like 7 months. Also new 880s are in service and #70 retired.
Well even a D60LFR can have roof fair.
I'm hearing that 925 is tented up on the front. And it's at the Pearl City Bus Facility.
And now it's grayed out that says The Hybrid Bus City & County of Honolulu.
Now approaching Hawaii Kai, portlock, resort hawaii Kai shopping center.
A D60LFR can also look like #161 - #180. They're found on the mainland.
Is the red tape still back on #77 ( #077 )?
Now approaching, pauoa valley and pauoa shopping center
Some 800s have the Exhaust Whistle. I mean the 2000 Gillig Phantoms. A few mins ago I just heard #805 with the Exhaust Whistle.
I rode on #142 on Route 42.
I think the D60LFR is no longer in production.
These buses are no longer in production ( I think so ).
I heard the exhaust whistle a little in the video.
I can hear that TheBus is making a strange sound.
This bus is a diesel not a hybrid.
The bus numbers on #545 are different now.
We used to have a ton of these here in Long Beach, but sadly, they were replaced by Gillig BRT's.
These will likely be replaced by BYD K9's (because the mayor and bus system will want the city to look good by having zero emissions buses)
BYDs? Nah, that's not happening. Ours will most likely be replaced with more 29' Gillig Advantages.
That screaming voith tho!!! it sounds just like our ungoverned phantoms as westcat O_O
This bus is now a Yellow Bus.
Well you must be lucky you got to be on this bus 2 years ago. This bus might be rare by now. I also remember about hurricane Lester. Those buses must of took a special service on 91. For instance #077 were owned with Pearl City facilities. But now it’s Kalihi. Those buses runs pretty much the whole island of Oahu. It has good service still and active. Never have accidents on this bus.
It's kinda rare I think?
Hello Mr.AuditorMSP. Nice too meet you. Nice bus that your on that video. I realize something. Engine sounds little different from normal. I’ve took those buses a lot. It’s more quiet. Let me know if you have any questions.
Back in 2016 still owned by Pearl City. Now it’s Kalihi.
It's Pearl City now. And now I think he rode on 241 then rode on 77 on Route 91 after.
No wonder why I don't like to ride the Kalihi DE60LFRs on the 1 , 1L , 2 , 2L , and Route 8!
I know of out of those times I rode the Kalihi DE60LFRs on Routes 1 , 2 , and 1L ( I think rode on Route 1L ) were countless and a waste of my time. I like to ride these buses on Routes A , C , 5 , 6 , E , 40 , 42 , 52 , 62 , and the others that are not related on the Kalihi Routes like 1 , 2 , 1L , 2L , and Route 8.
Princess Daisy D 127 We don’t have 62. It’s 51.
Yeah. I know. Just kinda forgot.
Princess Daisy D 127 Some people may say it’s the Route 62. But starting March, they renumbered 62 to 51. This route goes on the same as 62 but they uses the convenient route in Waipio area they don’t go on Kamehameha they have new service to Ukee Street. It’s more flexible for the residents that lives in that area.
COMMERCIAL 808 I know.
Isn't the 2012 Gillig Low Floor 40' Transmission Allison B400R?
Do you think these Kalihi DE60LFRs is going to run fine on the 40 , 42 , C , and any other Pearl City routes or any routes that barely use the routes like 5 and 19 and others with the battery doing fine?
This bus is on the Big Island now.
