Lots of lovely paintings! Liked!
Thank you so much for watching and liking the video!

Prang had some triangular shaped colored that were the bomb
Really? Different colors, too? Cool! I missed those. I have a few childhood Prang sets and I still love the old square-ish plastic boxes the best. They click together tighter and better than my rounded box from a couple years ago
thank you that was very thorough
Thank you for dropping a comment. I hope it was helpful.
Fantastic Video ❤
Thank you!

Great video! I do love a good showdown. I'm trying to use all my paper and sketchbooks I have now before buying more
Thank you. Yes I am with you. To many sketchbook with blank pages that I need to finish up.
Hi Ken, How did you know I wanted to paint slices of Oranges and Lemons? I am because I have loads of them in my front/backyard. I also wanted to share with you that Blick has the Derwent Line and Wash Pan Set for $14 on clearance. I got it over a month ago for $20. I also saw your Holbein paint video and I agree with what you said. I bought that 18 set 1.5 years ago and I am still using left overs and not the pans I pour from the tubes. They go a really long way and can be use as opaque as well. I do tend to pair them with other paint like Paul Rubens to make them flow! Happy 2025/Sunday!
Great minds think alike! I would love lemons and oranges in the front yard. I have the line and wash set, and a mega Derwent set I put together myself. At that price though I may grab another one to do another giveaway with. I have and wash set away in a live back in October. That’s a good price for it. Thank you so much for dropping and comment, and HAPPY 2025 to you!
Very nice painting. Liked and shared!
Thank you for all the support you continues show by sharing my videos!
Hello all! I hope everyone has enjoyed the weekend!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks JC! Happy Sunday!
I’ve bought the metallic set as that today. They looked and were placed right near the Windsor and Newtons in the U.K, which confused me as they look similar if just glancing. Am wondering if W and Newton is secretly supplying Phoenixes at a cheaper price point.
I said that above before watching the end of your video … 😂
That’s okay. It happens. Thank you for watching, and commenting.
Happy New Year🎉🎉🎉!
Happy New Year to you too!
No waay.... The box swatch is from top to bottom and bottom to top? 😆😅🤣😂
Yes it did. I will admit the pre printed color chart on the back of the box is printed in a weird order.
After watching this video, it dawned on me that I made a good choice buying a sample of these watercolor. I got mine at All About Art International. I bought the set with watercolor paper and brushes. And when I received my order and tried the paints, I also tend not to gravitate too much on it. It does behave differently on watercolor paper. Maybe I just need to use it more to get to know the paint is something I need to work on... and since it's an expensive watercolor and i don't want to commit to a tube set, I'm happy that I ordered a sample pack. The online store is a small business as far as I know and they are generous on the amount of paints given it'll last for a while. Beautiful review and paintings. 😊💯
That is actually a wonderful idea. I am going to break this set down into quarter pans sets most likely and list them on my site. They are nice paints. Thank you so much for your kind words, and for dropping a comment!
Happy New Year 🎊 Awesome Video
Thank you. Happy New Year 🎆🎈🎊

Nice, Happy New Year Sir. I am going to give it a try in watercolour later today, but first I am going to sleep more. 🥱
Happy New Year!! I am glad to know you will give it a try. This would be nice in watercolor.
Happy New Years! Thanks for sharing. I'm going to do a tropic fish in watercolor today. I want to experiment with wet on wet more. :)
Happy New Year! Thank you JC for dropping by. I hope your day is going amazingly. Wet on wet is one of my favorite techniques. You should check out the wet on wet video if you haven’t already.
What a coincidence 😊, I am determined to finish two colouring books by December 24 using pencils. I still have 8 to go out of 130 pages (half did in December 23 tho😂), so I'll surely start 2025 with pencils
Yesss color pencils in the New Year. I have so many sets to test and get through. So you guys will see more color pencils throughout 2025. Happy New Year!
Thank you for sharing. 2025 may be the year I start trying to work with color pencils. I am going to go through the review playlist a little later on to see what might be a good place to start.
That's wonderful! Color pencils are so much fun! Good luck with your color pencil journey. I hope you find a set you love.
Happy New Year Everyone! I am so glad we all have made it to another artistic year together!
I’m wondering why the watercolor paint industry is ignoring the issue with Prussian blue PB27? It’s been known to disappear in light and sometimes return in the dark? Kim Crick has done tests on PB27 and this is the experience she reports on her website.
Prussian blue is my fav blue watercolor. Even with the lightfast rating I choose it above all others. Ultramarine is number 2. PB27 has long had that lightfast rating that it does. Kim is a great resource. Yet, that know problem with Prussian blue was around long before any of us. My guess would be paint makers choose not to alter the paint to keep it as pure, and close to its true form as possible. Any alterations to the pigment would more than likely be synthetic. That might make the pigment even more unstable. This is all just reasonable deduction though. I could be completely wrong. With all that said. As long as you aren’t hanging a painting directly in sunlight. Things should workout okay. Thank you for dropping a comment. Happy New year to you and all of yours!
@ I agree with Kim, Indanthrene Blue is pretty too.
I just found an 18x24 sketch pad by Strathmore at Amazon for about $17.00. I know how worried you all were that I wouldn't get one. I like Strathmore, so now my Christmas wishes have all come true.
I am so glad you found one. Especially at that price. What series of Strathmore paper is it?
I popped in late, so here I am to watch it all! Good-bye 2024 💞 Hello 2025!! 🤗🎉✨
Happy New Year!
I have several Holbein as they are cheaper than Daniel Smith here. But, some paints shrunk and cracked a lot when I panned them. Any ideas on how to avoid that, please?
You might want to try adding a little glycerin, or a very small amount of pure honey. I myself prefer the glycerin. The climate you are in can greatly effect paints that contain honey.
I have several pinks/dark pink, oranges, yellows, and a green in single tubes. I just finished a pink poinsettia painting using largely Holbein paints because they had the pink colors I needed for the shades iny painting.
I am sure there are some wonderful colors out of the whole line. I am so glad you found ones you like.
Great Video ❤
Thank you!
@thethriftyapprentice Your welcome 🤗
Love the paintings - stretched watercolor is intriguing - hot press not my fav but might have to try one of these. 🙏
Thank you so much. Hot press wasn’t my fav either. However, I am starting to discover there are many brands out there I like. Especially if it is 100% cotton paper.
Just ordered the HWC Mineral Violet - it looks like a beautiful color!
It is. One of the colors from the set I really like.
I agree I see the green in the blue & brown mixes. I have a few HWC tubes - their cobalt blue is my favorite cobalt above all others. Thank you for this review 🙏
Thank you for watching, and supporting.
I would add a drop of rose madder to your neutral mixtures and see what you get. I think you can get a basic set from open stock that would single pigment. I found a chart that showed all their colors and pigments and shared it with you.
Cool. I am not that pressed by it. I will use them when I pull them out, but other than that they are just a nice paint. I prefer Mission Gold Pure pigment set still. I have tried dozens of pro brands, and nothing has knocked them out the top spot.
🙏
Thanks for supporting!
I like Holbein WC, but not my favorite WC. But Holbein gouache is probably my favorite gouache.
They are good, but not my favorite either. I am glad to have them, but probably won’t be the first set I reach for when I have other palettes containing the colors I like.
@@thethriftyapprentice that is why there are different paints for different folks! Honestly, my WN pro set is my “standard baseline set of WC. I haven’t tried Mission Gold yet. Maybe soon
I see the green under-tone
Me too! I see the green. But I wonder why Holbein kinda canceled "cool" purple in this set? The violet is so warm. And no Ultramarine? How strange!
Yes a Dioxazine Violet would have been nice. Plus I have to have ultramarine. It’s my second favorite blue.
I was hoping it would show on cam.
@@artandmusic09 Elizabeth, hi! I am so glad you commented under this video, because I have some info for you… Remember in the last Thrifty Live you mentioned your disappointment with your new watercolors? (I forget which brand.) I think you said that Burnt Umber was the worst. Well here is something that might explain it. "Art Prof" on YT has been doing a Painting Marathon. And if you go to their lives: "Painting Marathon Part 2" from 2 days ago at 6 minutes, they briefly mention Burnt Umber in an interesting way. I think I have heard before that Burnt Umber the pigment can be a bit oddball 🍄🟫🦔
@@artandmusic09 Hi Elizabeth! Maybe I am not allowed to suggest another channel? YT rules are so strange. And my follow-up comment to you disappeared. But…
I want to try the Holbein pastel set, and also Terre Verte. I do a lot of wet-on-dry, not a lot of wet-on-wet, so I could work with Holbein.
I mean they are good paints. Just one too many mixed pigment colors. Which could greatly affect the lightfastness. Regardless of the company claims. They don’t shift a lot. Therefore, they work wet on wet, or wet on dry with no problem. Not my favorite paints, but not bad paints at all.
@@thethriftyapprentice Yeah, I don't think Holbein has very good lightfast ratings for their paints. And they are big on convenience colors. I just like their opaque leaning colors.
Happy new year 🎉 ✨️ thank you so much for sharing
Happy New Year Friend! Thanks for dropping a comment.
If you like flow, QoR is the way to go! They also sell a (vegan) ox-gall substitute you can use with other watercolors. Holbein is great paint. Like you point out, they do tend to carry a lot of multi-pigment mixes, and you do have to pay more attention to lightfastness if that matters to you, but if you can work around that, they’re great. Their leaf green is my favorite bright green, and I really like their quin gold, too.
Yes I agree! I am a big fan of QoR watercolors. Have been using them for years. They are one of many great pro paints I have had the pleasure to try, test, and review. There is a video on that review on the channel. Holbein are nice, but they don’t make my top five pro brands. Thank you for commenting.
Hi! Hope everyone is having a wonderful time! 🌵🎉✨ Tysm for testing this one, Thrifty! Holbein is such a revered name in the gouache world! (Idk, maybe that is their true specialty rather than watercolor?) It is nice to know that even with this big price-tag, some prestigious brands are just eh… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ … and that there is no need to feel envy or insecure about not using them! This year, I New-Year' resolve to really get to know the materials I have and love them without getting (tooooo) distracted. Because getting lost in art supply dreams can be a real stumbling block to actually creating for me! And the basics I have are inexpensive, but worthy. I think I just have to feel more confident & practice with them more! 😅☺️ Thanks for all the Christmas vibes and art, Thrifty! I enjoyed all these test pieces. It's been so fun sketching along! ⛄️🖌️💫 I can't wait for Thrifty 2025!✨
Thank you so much. I am soooo happy that you enjoy this community. It is a wonderful idea to get to know what you have. Almost two hundred products reviews on this channel, and I still suggest that people use what they have first. When you find something that works for you then go out that. Regardless of what anyone else says. So keep doing you, keep practicing, and no doubt you will come out an even better artist. I haven’t tried their gouache, but it’s in my list for the professional gouache showdown.
@@thethriftyapprenticeWow, almost 200 reviews!! That is amazing!! Thank you so much for your support and wisdom, Thrifty! 💖 I am really going to try my best! 💪 I'm even reorganizing my art space to start the year right. For sure it has been inspiring and motivating to see your art and your videos evolving and changing, too! So maybe, I WILL improve… It gives me hope! Thank you for your dedication, dreaming big, and going for the gold, Thrifty! ⭐️✨
I have 1 Holbein tube. This is because a lot of their paints are multi-pigment. I generally lean towards single pigment.
Same here friend. However, I will say for multi pigment colors they are really transparent.
It's good that they rewet
Indeed. I love a good paint that will dry down, and then rewet with no problems.
I only have compose blue from that set and I love it. I bought it after I saw somebody use the studio Ghibli set and this whole set kind of reminds me of that. I would also like to have that jaune briliant, but I am not going to buy the whole set for only that. I have a few others too, not too many though. I think over all the paints are very beginner friendly I have Mission Gold 24 +2 pure pigments set too (those are 15 ml tubes) and I also love it, perfect for mixing! I don't think I will even try any other sets for a looong long time, just buy single tubes if I see an interesting colour You said in the beginning the tubes are 15 ml (I checked later and saw it was 5 ml) and thought your hands are huge 😂
Compose looks like such a pretty color! 🦋🫧
No I said they were 5ml. Maybe the way I speak made you think differently. Not sure. Yes Mission Gold Pure pigment set stills hold the number one spot for pro watercolors for me. A couple other brands impressed me just as much. This just wasn’t one of them. Although they are great paints. I couldn’t vibe with the compose blue. To much white in the make up for me. Overall, Holbein is not a brand I would recommend right off the top of my head, but one I would suggest as a great watercolor.
@@thethriftyapprentice I probably heard it wrong, but it was still hilarious I will continue watching your lovely videos for further recommendations 😇
If you like paints that move...have you tried Golden's QOR watercolors?
Yes I always name them in my top 5. There is a review under the review playlist if you want to check it out.
