PART TWO - I tried to cross the UK just by using £2 buses - how far did I get? My £2 BUS CHALLENGE
How far can I get from Leicester in just one day? Easy task you'd think, just grab a plane or train.
But I wanted to make it harder for myself and therefore I joined the legions of other transport TH-cam people who have taken full advantage of the Government's £2 flat single bus fare and challenged themselves to see how far they can get by ONLY using £2 buses.
Inspired by such channels as Travelling Turtle (th-cam.com/video/SRZCWhOpWag/w-d-xo.html) I set about on a wet and windy September morning (or the middle of the night really!) to see how far north I could get before the end of the day.
This is part 2 of 3 parts - if you've not seen Part 1 then make sure you check that out first!
All background music in the video is provided by the Audio Library within TH-cam with the exception of one song that I generated about doing a bus challenge via the excellent AI tool Sonu - suno.com/create
Used a mixture of Google Pixel 7a and Insta360 Go 2 cameras. All poor filming choices are my own!

Close to the Docklands and London City Airport and just 20 minutes by the DLR to Central London this is a well placed hotel but it just has one massive flaw - it's unbearable for summer. All this has of-course been done by adventurous pensioners since long before the introduction of the £2 fare. But I'm glad that you younger folk can get an insight into what we experienced years ago. Just as an example - it's 8 buses from (Watford) to Manchester (it used to be 7). Overall, let's compare your procedure with ours. It pays off big time to make an early start before the morning rush hour - you can get so much further in one day. So it pays us to pay the £2 fares up to the 9.30 mark. Most drivers will sort everything out upon boarding, but I have had the occasional driver who stops the bus at about the 9.30 mark, and call you forward to register your pass. Since the introduction of the £2 ceiling, I usually have no need to bother with this procedure any more. The big question remains - what this government will do regarding maintaining this special fare.? In the old days, in my travels throughout the country, I saw people in front of me handing over as much as £12 for a local bus single ticket that you can now get for just £2.!!!! My advice is - go for it while it lasts.!!!

If you stay in one area and scan your card 3 times they charge you for a day saver instead. If you scan your card all week they charge you for a weekly ticket and the cheapest ticket is charged. Up North there are 5 day tickets, 7 days tickets, 10 day tickets, 28 day tickets and yearly tickets. If you buy a yearly ticket it works out £0.98 a day unlimited travel.

Like ANY hotel, ALWAYS read the description VERY carefully. What it does NOT mention is usually more important than what it does. Bet the description doesn't mention air con at all - that means it doesn't have any. To be fair to Travelodge, I've stayed in well over 50 different ones around the the country over the years. There are very good ones (the one at Elephant and Castle in SE London for instance), and there are bad ones (often in need of a makeover). But like anywhere in the hospitality world, your experience comes down to the team running the place, and if they couldn't give an sh1t, then you're going to leave unhappy. I've had exactly the same range of experiences in Premier Inns, the only difference being is if you have a bad night, you get your money back - done that a couple of times, and once was where they had aircon in the room, but it was so loud that I was awake every hour! Also, if there are issues when you get there, bring them to the attention of reception as soon as possible - don't go making a whinging YT video about it. There's a much better video to be made showing the issues, you bringing them to the management's attention and then what they do to sort them out. Otherwise you're in Four in a Bed territory - moaning that there isn't an ironing board in the room when al they had to do was open their gob and ask for one!

    • @backpack-travels-uk
      @backpack-travels-uk 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

Absolutely, it was foolish of me not to check. However not having air con itself wasn't the problem, it was the fact that you couldn't open the windows more than an inch - due to the height of the building and safety. So the heat had nowhere to go meaning the room in essence became a greenhouse. I agree with your point about not whining on YT which is why I addressed it twice on the first day with the hotel (no joy) and then also with their customer care team via email afterwards and again met with no joy. Maybe I didn't make that clear enough in the video I hate not being positive - which is why I called out the great service by the check in staff. Just sadly the rest of the staff and after care let it down and like you say, Premier Inn would have just refunded straight away - not that this was about the money, it was the fact I paid a fairly high price for a really uncomfortable stay. It's their lack of care that would make me not bother with Travelodge again. It's not how I'd treat a customer.

Welcome to the joys of Arriva West Yorkshire, recently voted the worst bus company in the UK and as a user of their buses I can well see why. Constant delays and cancellations every single day, services which appear on the boards and on their app but don't actually turn up and services that do turn up despite not showing on those boards or apps. The sooner they go back into public control the better as far as I am concerned, Arriva are not fit for purpose.

@@backpack-travels-uk Enjoyed your video, wish I had the stamina to do it! When I started there were no ways of doing the journey planning easily -it was a matter of getting a route for about 20 miles to a main town in the next bus region then another planning exercise. I eventually had printed paper timetables (and sometimes maps) for all the surrounding regions. When I went I had alternate buses and routes and destinations ready. For me it was as good as a game of chess - - planning for all happenings. Nowadays the mental exercise has gone, it's just routine. The only anxiety is "will I make the next bus?" And for the vast majority of the time the answer is "yes". Except my local bus which has to battle through traffic and is usually 5 to ten minutes late, with a frequency of 15 minutes. I travelled all over the place, saw towns and villages and hills and valleys I'd never seen from the A and M roads. I became a bit of an expert on bus stations....

Has anyone else stayed here? What were your thoughts? Based on the photos on the website I think our room looked a bit nicer than some of the others and it was a really convenient stay for our needs that night

I work for Travelodge and I think you’re being a little harsh, you were pre-warned about the temperature of the room, which Travelodge can’t control the weather / temperature, and your water evaporated? You do realise water has to be 100 degrees to evaporate, so you’re telling us your room was at least 100 degrees?

I don't think I'm being harsh at all. We were not forewarned, we were told at check-in - by which point we'd paid £100 to stay there and had no opportunity to move rooms or hotels. There was no warning on the website that the room windows opened a tiny fraction - as I said in the video if the windows opened properly we would have at least had the opportunity to let some air in. During the trip the hotel ran out of ice and the water machine in the restaurant broke down meaning we had to buy water from the vending machine - which of course ran out. Of course Travelodge cannot control the weather - but this is a new hotel built in the last 12 years in a capital city, how it was built without air con and such small windows is such a design flaw. Sadly also whilst the majority of the staff in the hotel were great the customer services afterwards via email was pretty dire - had they had reacted better I'd have left more of a positive view - so no, I don't think I'm being too harsh. This was £100 I spent to not be able to sleep.

As for the water... we filled the sink up before bed and put a bottle in it to keep it cool over night. In the morning the water was all gone, it either evaporated or the sink plug leaked... However, water doesn't evaporate at 100 deg c. Water boils and turns to steam vapour at 100 deg c, it can actually evaporate at much lower temperatures.

@@backpack-travels-uk I understand you paid a lot, fair enough, but again, Travelodge can’t control the temperature based on how much you have paid. I get it at the lodge I work in because my lodge also does not have air con and they ask for refunds, but Travelodge won’t allow us to give guests a refund based on the weather, because I know the rooms can be humid, but again, that’s something Travelodge cannot control. Windows are restricted for health and safety, as you can imagine if they allowed the windows to open fully and your child falls out of the 5th floor window……. And if a health and safety auditor ever found a restrictor taken off, we’d fail our audit, and the manager + staff on duty would be sacked

@@backpack-travels-uk I understand you paid a decent sum of money, but Travelodge can’t control the temperature based on the room rate. You even said reception warned you, so you were warned. The windows are restricted for health and safety, because if you had a fully opening window and a child fell out of the 5th floor window……. Sounds daft but my point stands. And if a auditor was to turn up at the hotel and sees a window restrictor taken off at a guest request, the hotel would fail their health and safety audit and that staff member would be out of a job. I understand your frustrations but, there’s also the hotels side also regarding customers safety which is always priority, and why not use tap water from the room? It’s perfectly drinkable, buying water was a choice you made, not the hotel.

Absolutely I understand why the window restrictors are there and that's why I go back to my point that it's absolutely crazy a new hotel is built at height where they have to restrict openings without AC. Both hotels left and right of it have it. If this was a hotel built in the 70/80s like a lot of the roadside Travelodge hotels I'd absolutely understand - but this was built in 2012. As for warning - telling me at check-in and then giving no option to move to a room in a lower floor is not really a warning. Premier Inn for example will warn you at booking on the website if the hotel is not air conditioned so you can make that choice. I work in complaints for a large company and maybe I'm basing my expectations on what we'd do for a customer but Travelodge response just reassured me that they couldn't care less if I booked again - wasn't even after a refund per se.

** UPDATE ** As an update we lodged a complaint with the hotel as we spent just shy of £100 for the privilege of not being able to sleep. Travelodge customer services got back to us and stated that they're really sorry that it was hot but that they did all they could and they hope we come back soon and that they'd love to offer me an early check in. Yeah, so I won't be staying at Travelodge again! Maybe Premier Inn costs you an extra £5... but you're better off paying for a better room and experience... TRUST ME ON THAT! How have you found this hotel? Did you manage to get a wink of sleep? Let us know in the comments below and we'll upload some new hotel reviews from our travels soon!

I know it just slipped your mind but you forgot to mention that the A282 has a name. It's the Canterbury Way. Which is a bit silly because it's nowhere near Canterbury and in fact Canterbury Queue might be more accurate.

Do you know what? I didn't actually know that and you're right it's a bit out of the way to be called that really - it doesn't go towards or away from Canterbury!

Used this hotel for London MCM. It’s convenient that it’s so close to the excel

Completely agree, it's really well situated for the Excel but also travelling in to London is cheap and easy too. Thank you for watching my review :)
