    What is steering gamma?

    • @renereiche
      @renereiche 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Google picture search "gamma curve" ("gamma correction curve" will probably have more and better results, but it will be talking about color in pictures then). It's a way to associate input values (your controller stick from 0 [centered, no input] to 1[fully to the right]) to changed output values that follow a non-linear curve that never goes out of bounds -> no matter how much you change the shape of the output curve with the gamma value, the output can't go lower than 0 or higher than 1. Larger gamma values (mathematically >1) make the curve concave, sticking more to the x-axis before shooting up quickly - this translates to the car not steering much when you move the stick only a little, but then suddenly reacting a lot once the stick gets closer to the fully right(or left) position. But I don't remember the menu implementation, it has been a while. Maybe Kunos had a percentage value for gamma (hiding the actual mathematical value) or maybe they inverted it. Hope this helped at least a little.

    At the moment there's a lot of talk about how great an engineer Adrian Newey is but I would say that Jim Hall and Colin Chapman are the two greatest road racing engineers of all time. Jim is absolutely the father of modern aerodynamics.

    • @renereiche
      @renereiche 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Jim was a big proponent of mid-engine cars with slightly rearward weight distribution. In the magazine Car & Driver ("What makes Cars Handle", Car & Driver, April 1965), he wrote a lengthy article how this is the way forward for all cars, leading to better handling, brake distance and wear. The article indluded extensive charts and is half physics-lecture.

    Worked a Chevy dealer in 1970s in Midland, Texas. The little German man that was engine builder would bring into the dealer foreign sport cars with Chevy transplants , air condition and all. Knew kid working parts for him. They did lots of testing out at the race track. Lots of memories and wishes. A hint for the young dudes , don’t put one of the full race road race cams in your daily. I did put it in my pickup , drove it, took it out all in a few hours.

    Everybody (okay, not *everybody* ) knows who Carroll Shelby was, but here we have The Other Texan, still with us, who also built some mind-blowing race cars. I coveted my Cox 1/24 scale Chaparral 2E slot car (with working wing!), and followed Chaparral's ups-and-downs till the end. Amazing times, amazing guy. (Somebody make a proper movie about him already!)

    It was the 1970 race season at my home track of Watkins Glen, when I had the joy of watching Jim Hall's Chaparral 2J "Sucker Car" in the pits getting fitted to Jackie Stewart's backside. The crew placed two sheets of plastic in the cockpit, and as Jackie held himself up a few inches by his elbows, they poured liquid foam rubber between the sheets. It didn't take long before they had a seat cushion that fit him perfectly. I've still got pictures of Jim and Jackie collaborating in the pits. One problem they discovered with the 2J was that the vacuum system picked up debris that other cars passed over and deposited it all over the engine and chassis, creating a layer of asphalt. But the cornering was scary fast, and so it was outlawed.

    As a mechanical engineer you have to love how Jim Hall’s cars were just more advanced than the rest of the field. Being smarter is always a better way to make a car go faster than just throwing money at it without understanding the fundamental issues. He’s a great role model for anyone starting out in their career.

    Geez, the 2H had active suspension that was intended to keep the aero package working efficiently in 1968. Williams didn't do that successfully until the FW14b of 1992. Too bad it didn't work, but Hall was working too far ahead of his time.

    Porsche had one on a 550 Racer, that car was recently restored with the wing re-attached to the body. It looked f'ugly, but all in silver, it sort of blends in the back. Then there was the Mercedes 300sl racer in the 54 or 55, which used to flip up as an air-brake but could be put in various levels of degrees to aid driving. Fangio n Moss drove them.
