Broadstroke Workshop
COMING TO VIMEO THIS FALL
Have you ever wanted to create quick, small drawings in your sketchbook that capture the essence of a subject and look like polished, finished pieces? Well, you're in luck! In this workshop, we'll explore the art of Broadstroke drawing, a method I first discovered in Ted Kautzky's book, 'Pencil Pictures.'
Join me for two sessions of hands-on learning, where we'll delve into various Broadstroke techniques and apply them to different subjects. In the morning session, we'll focus on creating quick studies, while in the afternoon, we'll use what we've learned to create more complete drawings that could be turned into paintings.
Throughout the workshop, you'll have the opportunity to ask questions and receive personalized feedback. Plus, the entire workshop will be recorded, giving you one year of streaming access to review the material whenever you like.

Great tutorial, interesting comments, and thanks for no music!
Glad you liked it! I am learning video as I go.
Thankyou Carl, I learned alot from you. Your a good person and a great artist. I love the way you use color.
You are very welcome. I'm glad you found this helpful.
I believe a drawings inherent qualities can equal and sometimes better that of a paintings aesthetic stimulus. Drawing offers the viewer the ultimate in abstraction and a wonderful statement of applied simplicity ! Ive found that Hot pressed - Velum or Bristol board surfaces the best for this Broad stroke practice. Rougher paper found in cheap Art diaries doesn't allow for the same statement of graphic expression. Best wishes Carl and happy drawing !
Great point! I found the same. A rougher surface takes away from the pristine strokes. They advertise that the paper in the diary is recycled. I don't care. It's the surface I want. Also, drawings are more direct, and often reflect the thinking of the artist more than the finished paintings.
Hi Carl. I do remember the wonderful Ted Kaustky who was a master draughtsman of this particular broadsides draughting skill ! I have his book which was first published in 1940 by Reinhold Publishing Corp. Titled " Pencil Broadsides " which illustrates this technique beautifully. I have found the 5.6mm and smaller diameter mechanical clutch pencils the very best tools for this technique along with a Dimond impregnated sharpening plate which you can buy for a few dollars. The grinding plate / stone allows you to grind & generate an oblique / angle of the lead. Using this grinding plate requires no time whittling wood from the pencil because there isn't any, and takes seconds to sharpen a clutched lead of 5.6mm diameter to a 1mm point at one end and up to 8mm in broad side width the other end. I hope this helps people as it has made my draughting much easier and quicker ! Best wishes Carl and happy drawing !
Thank you for the information. I have Kautzky's books also, having discovered them in the library when I was a student. They inspired me greatly. I am in his debt. Thanks also for the information. I hadn't thought of using the clutch lead. I do most of my drawing with a 6B pencil because it saves me time looking for pencils of different hardnesses. I just use less pressure for the lighter greys. Sometimes I also use a 2B for the lighter tones. Best wishes to you also.
Mr. Purcell, I greatly appreciate your tutorial. You have great comments and beautiful techniques. i learned much from watching and painting with you on this tutorial. Thank you sir. Don Sylvester Houston, Texas
You are very welcome. I' so glad you found it useful. We have to share with each other or we lose it. Thanks for your comment.
Carl your tutorial must be the first I've seen that uses dark values before filling in the light. Most artists say that in watercolour one should work from light to dark. I like your style which is more like painting in oils.
Glad it was helpful! I do each painting as it seems to call. Often I begin with a light wash over everything that is not going to be white, then go to the dominant area and develop that. I have often started with the darkest area, or the area with the most contrast so that it is well established and I know how far not to go with the rest. I don't like formulas.
Mr. Purcell, I greatly appreciate your tutorials. I slow them down and take a couple of hours to watch your beautiful techniques and admirable talents. Thank you for your lessons. Don Sylvester Houston, Texas
You made my day, Don. Thank you for your wonderful comment. I'm so glad you find them helpful.

Thank you very much.
Seem to have a sound problem here Carl. I'm getting 2 tracks slightly out of sync. Like a bad echo.
Yes there was an echo. my recrding platform was recording two microphones simultaneously. Sorry about that. I posted it here anyway since there was no way to remove the echo.
Thank you Carl. Appreciate your quick response.
Hey Carl, where have you been hiding? Just found you. Love the way you explain your thinking about the various passages as you progress through the painting. Subscribed immediately. Thankyou.
Welcome aboard! I have been hiding right here. I am happy to share. Thanks.
I love the demo, but I would personally get rid of the sloshing water.
Thanks, that was one my first attempts at video making, and I agree about the sound. I never used it again.
Greetings from Star Idaho! I just found you and your channel…. This was a great video! I love the cling wrap trick.. I’ll definitely be using that😊. I can also relate to your subject matter.. I looked at your website and watched another start to finish painting of the barn in snow.. just wonderful. Thank you for sharing your skill!
It is my pleasure to share what I can. Thank you so much.
Very beautiful painting and with explanation is great Thanks a lot for sharing 😊
Thank you so much 😀 Glad you enjoyed it.
First time I am watching your tutorial ~ ❤Love it!!
Yay! Thank you! I'm glad you found me. I love sharing.
Well, it looks like this will be the next video I buy when I'm done with Creating Value Studies! I am really starting to SEE the value patterns and connections and finally seeing how to achieve unity with value patterns thanks to you! What a great gift you have given me!
Your enthusiasm is wonderful. I am honored to have played a part in your artistic growth. It's a wonderful journey. Thanks again.
I have Kautzky's book and I have been practicing broadstroking on value studies. I will also be taking this video course on Vimeo! What a wonderful teacher you are and a wonderful discovery for me!
Sounds great! Thank you very much for your insightful comments.
I learned so much from your books and videos … in particular, value is infinitely more important than colours
Thank you. I'm so glad you found it helpful. Colors are mor arbitrary, but values have to work because they are the skeletal structure on which you hand all the detail and color.
Another BRILLIANT video! What I got most out of this one is how you planned your painting with your value study, followed that plan, but executed the painting with spontaneity while using your plan! WOW! That's what I call a master! Thank you for keeping the value study in view while you painted! Great lesson!!! (Again!)
Thank you so much. I think of the subject as step one (it triggers interrest), the value study as step two (it tells me how I will organize the space), and the painting as step three. It is the realization of the initial thinking. All three are realities, and all three have a life of their own. Two cannot be a copy of #1, and #3 cannot be a color copy of #2.
This is more than a lesson in painting rocks: it is a lesson in brush handling, values placement, edge control and color unity. Man, I LOVE your videos! Thank you!!
Wow, thank you! I'm so glad you appreciate the thinking behind the videos. Sharing is so much fun.
@CarlPurcellArt Once I master the Creating Values course on Vimeo, I plan on doing many more of them and, hopefully, one of these days, doing some workshops with you. By the way, my friend, Don Andrews says 'hi' and he speaks very highly of you. I feel soooo lucky to have found you!!!!
You are much more than a great artist, Mr. Pucell - you are truly a great teacher! EVERY video of yours I watch (so far all of them at least once) is a goldmine of valuable insights and instruction!!!
You are soooo kind. Thank you for you rewarding feedback. I really appreciate it.
Thank you for turing on the light for me! My second watch of this video and it really is a brilliant lesson! I am really enjoying your 2-part video lesson on Creating Values! Soooo worth it!
Wonderful!! That makes my day. I am doing this to share the things I have earned, and when I hear that it has been really helpful, well that's just great. Thank you very much.
I just discovered art graf and really loved your values demonstration. I travel between CO and CA twice a year and need to travel light so art graf works well..Do you have any '24 workshops?
I had ArtGraf sitting on my shelf for over a year before I "discovered" it. The only workshop I am doing this year are "Summer Snow', two week long workshops at Snow College.in June, and Zion Canyon in November. I will be doing one or two online workshops.
Just what I needed to learn. Thanks!
Just what we all need to learn. I don't know what first made me realize that I needed to learn the value of value studies, but I recognized that the paintings that held my attention were those with strong value patterns. Thanks for the comment.
Change in plane, change in value?
Certainly. The plane facing the light source most directly will be the lightest, the one receiving the light obliquely will be darker, and the one facing away from the light will be even darer. Within each plane there will be variations, but the broader division is the most important.
