Before You Buy a MANUAL Mitsubishi EVO X as a DAILY DRIVER
piers_bailey
I bought a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X as a daily driver, is that a terrible idea? Quite possibly, but I thought I'd do a review on my experience so far. Make sure to check out my previous video below where I took it out on a track day at Donington Park in the UK and ran into a few issues...

    I changed the GSR for an SST when my daughter was born :P lacking the 6-gear and drooning on the 5th my wife could not stand :P. Despite the bad reputation, SST is not so bad especially since the TCU was cracked and all of the technical issues are known and you can upgrade them all. If you will service it and use it correctly it's quite fun😅. On the 6-gear/cruse holds 1900-2000 RPM so it's quiet :). Stock SST holds up to 550Nm of torque. Got my tuned to 380hp/510Nm way back and with over 190,000 km on the ODO, it still works like a charm. PS all Evos X were 295HP from the factory. The FQ 300 330 360 440 etc. were the dealer upgrades for/in the UK(re-tune, muffler, HKS boltons, upgraded SST gearbox for eh 440 SST, etc.). I It was also done in other countries where the dealers were allowed to modify. The FQ360 was called GT360 in mine and it had a re-tune and a full HKS catback exhaust and some other smaller pieces. Over all solid, fun car and 99% of those cry babies that say "it's not real Evo" or "previous were better" never even sat in one or drive one...

    Adding to my last comment, this is the starting lineup (still sorting out exact details) for when I build my 2JZGE: -Rods -Pistons -Fluid Dampr Crank Pulley -Lightweight Pulleys -Ported Head -Supertech Valvetrain -BC 272 Cams (Might go custom) -ITB System from Xcessive Manufacturing (In development) -If ITB system is unobtainable I'll go for a FFIM with Bosch Electronic Throttle Body (retain cruise control) :-) -LinkPnP ECU from Xcessive Manufacturing -Figs-PPE Equal Length Race Headers -3" Y-pipe back Exhaust -Injectors -Spec Lightweight Flywheel/Clutch Kit This should be a strong, reliable and responsive setup. That would be an absolute monster, keep me posted on this build!!

  • @vmc2216
    @vmc2216 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Thank you for the breakdown. I don't think the cost was that much considering today's prices. I 100% support this build as you now have a unique setup that you can beat on allllll day long that will last. Maintenance is even easier than before without that annoying stock intake manifold. I'm sure you could squeeze out another 20-30whp with rods, pistons and head/port work. Everyone will talk about going turbo for the same price but anyone who knows how to build a car understands you'll need at least $10k to do the turbo setup properly. They forget you need a different transmission/clutch kit to handle the power, internals to withstand boost and heat management as turbos pump out sone serious heat when doing more than just a few highway pulls against your buddies. Coming from the Audi world and now owning an IS300, building an NA 2JZGE to achieve around 300whp is possible, extremely reliable and plenty of fun around a track. Most people never drive their car at the limit other than a straight line. You really don't need a ton of power. Great stuff!

    • @PiersBailey
      @PiersBailey 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Glad you found it interesting! The build itself seems to have divided opinion which was always going to happen, but I love it so that's the main thing right? Completely agree on cost, and lets be honest cost to power is much more efficient with a turbo. Reliability wise though I've had no problems at all since the build was properly completed so it's swings and roundabouts!

      The only practical thing about the 6 is that it has a bigger boot than the CT9A platforms and X. Otherwise all you get is a genuine homologation special from the 90s. You feel and hear everything and you feel like a absolute knob while driving it on the street. I daily drove my bone stock 6 GSR for a year and a half and put 10k km on it. I enjoyed every bit of it, but the car truly is a track/weekend car even if its not modified. So now it only gets to go to car meets and the track on weekends. If you want a practical vehicle go with the X. If you want practicality with a bit of nostalgia and some amazing performance go with a CT9A (7, 8, 9) model. If you want to feel like Tommi Makinen and want every single bit of performance, feel every clunk and hear everything from dust being kicked up into your wheel arches to wind noise go with the CP9A (5, 6). One more thing about the 6 and other homologation evos. Even stock suspension is monotube... so every small bump on the road is a vertibrae breaking, disk herniating bump.

    Hey love to see someone falling in love with an Evo. Regarding your concerns on Ayc pump relocation, mine was relocated by the previous owner and it sits behind the trunk liner on the right side, so you won't lose any space only a tiny bit. And regarding your gearbox shift issue try changing the gear oil and get a good synthetic oil as it should help. I drive an sst which is oem from factory not touched and is currently at 198k km and putting 350whp. If you service and take care of it properly it will last you a lifetime. I would also suggest you change the manifold before the baby as it will crack and its just a matter of when. If it cracks you will start getting exhaust fumes into your cabin, will suggest artec performance manifold.

    Dont put the engine cover back on, people take them off because its plastic and sits very close to the exhaust manifold. It can melt or catch on fire. More than likely fine to DD with, especially in traffic, but if you are ripping on it on the streets or on the track def take it off. Also if the OEM manifold is there, be prepared for it to crack. All OEM X manifolds crack at some point.

With current mods , just under 400hp, I do have the the SST, they are amazing, but need upgrading to be reliable, and are now capable of being tuned through Evoscan. Hey! Sorry for the slow reply, I have a fair bit of info on my channel here about the build, that's the reason I made these videos to be honest, but if you're after anything else in particular shout me on instagram. Link should be in the description of the vid

      Love to hear it! Only top end changes, nothing bottom end. Uprated cams, valve springs and retainers, then changed it to coilpacks rather than the dizzy

    How have the pagid pads lasted over the trackdays? Also do they squeal in daily driving? I noticed they're race pads which usually drive me nuts around town.

    Hi Piers, re: boot and alarm. Check when you open the boot that the interior light turns on, if it doesn’t then the alarm doesn’t realise the boot has opened and automatically locks the car. Had the same issue myself and cleaning the boot lock and switch fixed it 👍

    • @PiersBailey
      @PiersBailey ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Chris, great info, will have a look and see if that's the issue!

      @@PiersBailey Hey Piers; the easiest way to check this is to unlock the car with the remote; open the driver or passenger door; close the door, then open the boot and leave it open for a minute. If the alarm doesn't go off, you confirmed the problem!
