I love the Xmas tree farms in that area. The first house my mom and dad bought together wasn't too far from where that Mt. Charlie's Tree Farm is. It's been a tradition every year to get our Xmas tree from one of the tree farms in that area since. The Santa Cruz Mountains are a very special place to me, and always will be.

Just came across your channel and love it! Been watching alot of your train tunnel videos. I grew up in RWC my whole life, drove these roads all through HS and my college years at UCSC. Never explored much of santa cruz mountains and want to get to the train tunnels. Have a place I can message you for info?

I will tell you a funny local haunted house story. When my parents were looking for home to buy, just before we got the home we ended up in which was on the Santa Cruz/Scotts Valley border, there was a home we looked at in Felton, which was right near the main town. Beautiful home. I was in the kitchen with my dad and the realtor, and my mom went to go check out the backyard. It was a two story home, and when my mom looked back at the house from the yard, there was a face looking at her through one of the upstairs bedroom windows that appeared and reappeared. No one was living in that house at the time, and no one else was in there. My dad didn't believe my mom, and put in the offer anyway, but we did get outbid, which made my mom happy for obvious reasons. I for one am not scared of ghosts, but I don't like the idea of unwanted roommates.

Cool drive down from Summit Rd. I took Laurel Rd from 17 to get down there with a car. Probably a more pleasant ride with a bike--the roads are narrow.

You can easily the chop shop on that road.

it is way overgrown now compared to this video. crazy how a few years change things. they put logs at the lagoon so you cant ride where you went.

Anyone know if you can take the return loop going in so you arrive at the entrance rather than above it?

I saw that VW in April of 2021 and it was definitely not "perfectly good" by then.

Midpen owns most of the land past the gate where you turned left, and the rangers will chase you out of there if they find you (and they do patrol semi-regularly). On the other hand, if you take the right instead you can go all the way to Mt Madonna completely legally, there was a court case that opened those gates ages ago so it's a public right-of-way now. There's only a few pieces of private property left up there, around LP and Mt Um and I think once Midpen grabs a few more parcels they might open Mt Um - Loma Prieta Road, which will be amazing. Here's hoping!

I Grew up in the SCMs in the '70s, explored all those same winding roads on my old KZ, wandering like you, with the years stretching out ahead of me, decades before youtube. Some day when you are getting old and I am gone, there will be others, riding their own new road, their young eyes gazing up at those same gnarly wooded ridges and out over the bay shining in the Sun, with the years stretching out ahead, just like us. It's a great thing to be able to feel that freedom again via your videos. Thank you kindly.

I lived in ben Lomond for 5 years. Had no idea the highland house was supposedly haunted. Funny story , though. I would sit in the front and back lawn to meditate/ recharge. I would end up playing almost. I’ve never felt this in my life , but, I had an experience like I had lived there in a past life. I could see myself in clothes like a house staff person would wear. It was bizarre. Anyhoo- thanks for the vid.

There's a OHV trail that cuts across from HWY 4 to Lower Blue Lake. A little rough in some rocky sections and a couple creek crossings. Thought maybe you were going that way when leaving Bear Valley. Love your videos, thanks for posting.

Ben Lomond > Beacon Hill or Beacon Mountain. Ben Lomond Scotland was given the name because it serves a purpose as does Ben Lomond mountain in Ca. Beacons are used to give warning, like a light house , to surrounding areas, a guiding or warning light or fire on a high place. (Lomond >Luminate ) Hence Cal Fire perched at top of the 2,600 ft mountain. Also,Hypothetically ,if you were to have a man standing on top of Ben Lomond at Alba and Empire Grade Rd. He could see a nice view of the pacific ocean from the west and another clear view of Mt. Hamilton Lick Observatory (4,000 ft el.) to the east. If you had another person standing at Lick Observatory a top of Mt. Hamilton you could send a message from a ship off the coast all the way to sacramento via these two people and a light or flame. Hypothetically . Ben Lomond mountain has much in common with the GIZA PLATEAU in Egypt . Much much more than you might imagine. If you look closely at Hwy 9 passage through the SC mountains and SLV (Slave) you might start to notice exactly what i mean by this. Hidden in plane sight. (For those with eyes to see)True Story.

Last I checked, that little market is a coffee shop/cafe now. My grandma had a good friend that lived right near there. I had been to that place when it was a store/gas station when I was a kid. I think it had a little deli too, but I can't remember now for sure. I am going back well over 30 years now. It was nice as a market, but I have been meaning to check out the Cafe. I believe that sat empty for a while before the cafe was opened.

Looks like they really improved that road a lot since I was last up that way. I've been meaning to get up there again for the views. My last time up there was in the 90s, and the road wasn't very good.

This is really cool, because it has been so long since I have been through that particular part of the mountains. And I have been wanting to go the dirt section of Summit Rd to take some shots of Loma Prieta Peak and Monterey Bay from up there with my telephoto lens. I thought it would be cool to come back down going to Mt. Madonna and pass through Corralitos in to Aptos. Your videos are also very helpful because they give me good idea of how long some of these little adventures should take.

You, sir, are more patient than I. I refuse to ever try to cross HWY 17 these days for the reason we just saw. I just would have crossed using Summit overpass. Haven't eaten at the Summit House in ages. I'm going to have to make a point to stop there sometime for some grub.

GREAT vid! Just did a middle school camp up there and our bus driver took the wrong rout. We had a 48 passenger bus. We ended up driving this exact stretch and then heading to bear creek rd. We all made it out safe, many times our bus rolled backwards, bottomed out and ripped up the road. Absolutely terrifying. I am almost positive buses aren’t supposed to be up there? Anyone have thought or info on that?

I’d love to seriously own this house and fix it up properly. I’d have the exteriors modernised. Maybe to look like the house in the movie. Every time a fan rolled up to the house the windows would be open (obviously because it’s hot as fuck there in the summer) and ‘People are strange’ would blast out of Alexa through loud speakers. 😆

I was on the Santa Cruz County side of Summit Rd this afternoon, doing a little exploring. Moved to Gilroy 6 months ago and bought a 2021 Africa Twin from Hollister back in March. Came up to the gate right after the pavement ends and saw all the private road and keep out signs. Decided to turn around. Found out after I got home that it is not a private road, so I'll be going back next weekend and I think i'll hit up that store. Glad I found your channel!

My friend used to know old back roads years ago (late 70's). This may have been one. I think we went on one off of a road in Scotts Valley that ended up Old Mount Charlie, off Bear Creek Rd. Ring a bell to anyone? Probably not there anymore. This was fun. Reminded me of as a small kid on the front of my dad's Harley, riding. Or maybe the Triumph. This was early 60's. Can't do that anymore! Thanks for these! I'll watch some more. 🙂
