Scott Johnson founder and owner of Soar Tackle, has been fishing for well over 30 years. Scott started his main fishing career on the local match circuits in and around Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire picking up a number of trophies along the way.
A bit of a traditional angler preferring to fish float rods and feeders, earning him the nick name 'Stick float' some 20 odd years ago. That said he is a keen pole angler on canals and still waters too.
Scott say’s “My aim is to pass my knowledge on to fellow anglers young and old. I enjoy nothing more than helping someone improve on their fishing."
Why not pop in to our Kegworth store and see us? Or fancy a day out with Scott, you can book an experience day with him through the shop website www.soartackle.co.uk

Hayabusa 220 hooks
The Hayabusa HMMY220 or 220 for short is starting to gain a bit of a following with feeder anglers.
Although possibly the least known with in the range it’s a hook that has been around for some time.
A wide gape medium wire spade end hook that seems to defy its wire gauge to its strength!
Mainly being used for feeder fishing their shape seems to help stop fish being able to eject the hook. Anglers have found them ideally suited to skimmer and bream fishing with hook baits presenting really well on them.
On the famous river Trent Riverfest qualifiers the 220 accounted for a number of Trent Barbel giving the anglers that use the 220 huge confidence in the hooks ability not to straighten out.
If you’ve not tried the 220 give them ago

Looking after them Squats
มุมมอง 116หลายเดือนก่อน
Squats are fantastic bait, but they do take a little bit more looking after. If you have received your squats through the post the first thing you must do is to open the bag that they come in and allow them to come back round. Best thing to do is to tip them in to a tray, cat litter trays are prefect. If not a large bait tub or simular. They can take around an hour to start to wake up, they do ...
The Humble Squat for fishing bait
มุมมอง 1.9K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
The humble squat can actually be a deadly hook bait, especially on tough canals. Don't just think of the squat as a canal bait though. Their great for adding to groundbaits as a loose feed, being small they won't break your gorundbait up to early. And when the going getting really tough cupping balls of leam laced with squats can be a match winning tactic. Another plus for the squat as that the...

Hayabusa 194 hooks
มุมมอง 673 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Hayabusa EB19411 or 194 for short is my go to hook for Bread and Pinkie fishing whether it be on the canal or river. I personally like the way the bait sit on the hook, especially bread punch. A sort of crystall bend pattern with a medium shank, I find the hook extremely reliable due to its strength to wire gauge. A fine wire that can't half take some punishment, what I talking about is tha...

The Hayabusa 157 hook pattern. A very popular hook with the feeder and perch angler. The 157 is quite and agressive hook yet lightweight for its gauge of wire With a slight beaked in point the 157 is a spade end hook with a wade gape crystal bend and a medium length shank and whisker barb. Ideal for worm, double caster or maggot, it's lightweight giving good presentation. You can find them in s...
Hayabusa 128 Hooks

The Hayabusa 128 hook This was the original pattern of hook we started with from the Hayabusa range. A good all round hook the medium gauge wire is available in Nickel or Black Nickel. Suitable for just about any bait, the strength of the wire gives you confidence that should you hook into something big the hook will handle ...

Few hours Roach Fishing back in late March

On a rare dry day in late March I had a few hours spare on a Sunday evening. With the days starting to draw out a bit id definetly manage a few hours Roach fishing on my local pond just up from the shop. Kit was kepted to a minium with just a waggler rod and a bomb / feeder rod. A few bits of bait, maggots pinkies Fjuka pellets so nothing special and it was all I needed to catch a few Roach. To...
Large pole float winders

Large pole float / float winders. With most manufacturers winders being sized towards smaller commercial size floats, when it comes to storing floats for big open waters and or Bolo floats stick floats and the likes. are they sharp as korda? and do they get unsharp fast like korda?
Hi, I can't speak of Korda as I do not use their hooks. However a note on Hayabusa. They have been manufacturing hooks in their factory in Japan for over 50 years, and some top competition lure companys will only use Hayabusa hooks on their lures. A big selling part with the lures is that they state the fact they are made using Hayabusa hooks. Hayabusa are a manufacturer making their products from start to finish from forming the steel to the finished product. Meaning there is no compremise on quaility. Where's many companies like Korda out source / buy in hooks from whoever is manufacturing them and branding them as their own, which is prefectly fine with some good quaility products. But I my opinion this can give quality problems at times. As for sharpness yes very sharp, I can never usderstand this sharping brand new hooks. Begs the quetsion if they were good enough in the first place they wouldn't need sharpening! Staying sharp is another reason for why people use them so much in lure fishing and thus switching to them now in the coarse fishing world. Hope thats a little bit of incite in to them, Put i mentioned above I cannot comment on them against Korda as I do not use their hooks. Tight lines
Hi, I'm from another country, how can I buy that cylinder?
Hi not sure if I can help you with that one. Might be just a hunt around your local shops that sell floristry items as the cylinder is sold as a glass vase here.
Hi, Where can you buy that cylinder ?
I got mine from the Range sometime ago pretty should they still sell them. Should be in there home section with the candle etc
Not many tackle shops produce their own bait. I use pinky more in winter months, but not much squats. 🎣 PS maggot I've been getting from tackle shop has been frothing up even when cold why do they do this ?
Pinkies can be a great bait all year round, like you say especially in the winter. Frothy maggots, it’s generally because they are sweating. Can happen even more when they are cold especially if in a bait tub with the lid on. As they’ll still be breathing and generating some heat they’ll create condensation inside the tub thus they’ll start the froth up. The tackle shop should be keeping them clean and putting fresh maize flour on they as they sell them to you, in doing so they should keep happily in a fridge with out you touching them for a couple 24hrs. Best way to keep maggots or pinkies in the fridge is in a tray the biggest that’ll fit in the fridge. No lid though that is important. Dust they with fresh maize flour. If they are frothy when you get them home your best off popping them in some fine sawdust to dry them off. To clean them off you’ll need a 2mm preferably riddle or 3mm shack the sawdust off then pop them in a tray with some maize flour. Hope that’s of help
Best education vid I’ve watched for a while. No bull just facts, thanks.
Your welcome Mark, and thank you for your kind comment / feed back. I really do need to sit down and add some more. :-)
Squatts used to be in most tackle shops years ago (1970's / 1980's) popularised by Leicester's Likely Lads, especially bronze squatts. Difficult to obtain nowadays, unless one orders over 2 gallons. Had to order from Northwich last year. Do Soar Tackle have squatts in stock throughout the year ?
Thank you for your input and question 😊 Bit of a forgotten bait really, tend to get used more round here in Leicestershire Derbyshire on the autumn and winter canal leagues. We only tend to keep Squat through Autumn and Winter as there’s not the demand in the spring and summer. If we can see people want them and the bigger if is if the maggot farm is doing them then we’ll make sure they’re available for people.
@@SoartackleCoUk Thanks
Which light lignum floats do you recommend please mate.
I think Dave Harrell is the only person doing lignum floats now. Sometimes worth having a look around carboots and traditional tackle shops for old stock, as don’t think you can beat the stick floats from 20 odd years ago. I’ve got a some Dick Clegg Britannia sticks that must be 30 years old but can’t find anything that betters them.
Brilliant help as learning river fishing thanks !
Glad you found it of help 👍😊
Can you get Red squat or at least colour the Whites ?
We do get them in red but not that often. The red dye they use seems to really really shorten their life span. As mentioned in the clip I’ve been playing about Fjuka red power to give them a tinge of red colour
@@SoartackleCoUk I could imagine normally the squat are fed on the pre-coloured meat , Pinkies also however when you see the fluro pinkies they seem to last forever if kept in correct storage - keep up the great work Scott
Squatt power 🎣🎣🎣 as a junior many years ago got told by all old school anglers if after bream you need squats
Yes have to agree with you on that one Matt.
I bet Anne Summers shops sell something similar 🤣🎣✨️
😂🤣
Hi, Where did you get that big glass cylinder ?
Hi mate I got mine from the Range, Id of thought they'd still sell them.
Not being funny but he said twice he got it from the Range for about £6. Why click on a video if you're not going to listen?🤷♂
Good hooks. I've used them for a while now.
What is your favorite pattern?
@@SoartackleCoUk H.KAJ157 & H.CHK128. Ireland and big naturals.
Maybe have a bit of a "Promo'" bud, and give some Caps away ?? Are the hooks Ready tied, Loose, of both ?
Aye yes something we’ll be putting together in not to distant future 👍 Hooks are loose, they do do a very limited range in pre tied but not sure if they’ll expand that or bring them over to the UK.
Hi just wondering is it the Loughborough soar angling society to fish it or is it another
Hi, it’s the opposite bank to Loughborough Soar. Part of cranes pond, it’s nice as you can more or less part behind you peg.
Thanks for the video. I make my rigs up using a Rigmate and check them directly in my water butt. (Obviously, no good for your demonstration)
A water butt is perfect for checking rigs 👍👍
The smallest shot I can use is a no.8. Anything smaller I find impossible to handle.
Smaller shot are far from easy to use unfortunately. Have you tried slot shot or styles? They tend to be easier to use as they’re normally softer. Also being an oblong shape they’re easier to handle. 👍
Excellent clear explanation.
Thank you 👍😊
cheers scott..very informative i wondered what they were
Welcome Mark, and thank you for the comment :-)
It was recommended by a guy who worked in the tackle shop to just use the wife's, Hair Conditioner, with a bit of water, just enough to loosen it mind. I haven't used anything else & works Great!!
Aye yes can't see why that wouldn't work. Should smell nice to LOL
Yep', don't be fooled by un necessary, Tackle Tart stuff (£6) when there's stuff, just as good already in the bathroom.
Nice video and that's very helpful .
Make small loops out of old elastic cut offs and put on top kits were you desire to save elastic being out of pole when hooking rig up 👍
Referring to making your own by Jamie Hughes is using the Simple hair conditioner has it as very little external fragrance. 7 parts water to 1 part of the said hair conditioner in an old washing up liquid bottle. Job done.
Good video hope to see more
How do I get mate
Hi mate. We have them in the shop or they're available through our shop website. www.soartackle.co.uk/dosapiombo-float-shotter-718-p.asp Cheers Scott

Your very welcome. Top tip in getting back is to keep things simple. Prep at home so your not wasting time on the bank. :-)
@@SoartackleCoUk I bought my pole of youse a middy muscle tech 6 mtr with a few extra extensions 4 and 4 top kits I bought 2 packs of 3 sensas 1.50 mtr hollow tips and cut them down to suit the bushes for the 3 sizes of middy solid elastics you recommended and use this set up for all my pole silver fishing great kit ,I actually bought another muscle tech 6 for spares , I actually regularly fish it with all the extensions and the butt from the other pole getting me about 11.5 mtrs and not a bother tempted to go longer but can't seem to source spares anymore because I think middy have stopped trading any idea what's happening with them ,anyway sorry for rattling on ,what you think of my setup ?be nice to get an experienced anglers opinion regards owen
Hi mate, Set up sounds good to me. So long as it works for you that is the main thing. Stick to your 11 mtr its more than enough id of thought for most places. You could always chuck a waggler or a small feeder/bomb for your longer line. Sounds like your doing bob on with elastic choice. :-) As for MIddy they are still around. The original owners retired and sold the company. The new owners have annouced they hoping to have everything back up and running in March. They have been posting about stuff on Facebook.
Dont listen to him that mud line is his flyer in spring/summer
Posh bit of kit
I put line through & use my kettle to trim my floats in .
Brilliant, thanks Scott

Awesome stuff - can’t wait !! 😊

@@SoartackleCoUk Alan norrish is going to come as well mate. Help me with a few bits. Hope that’s ok 👍
Not a problem at all
Learnt something new here. That the bush is in 2 components! I've fitted a couple of these s-slides and pushed them as a single component. Now I know why I struggled! I put a dab of loctite on them just to make sure they don't move or pop out. Thanks for this short video. Very helpful
Welcome Jim, find you get a really good fit doing it that way. One thing I forgot to mention was that if you slightly twist the soft part left and right during fitting. That really settles it home.
@Soar Tackle yeah that's how I got it to settle in the hole. Twist left and right as you gently ease it into the drilled hole. Once settled it sits perfectly and in my mind the small dab of epoxy just gave me ease of mind. Probably not needed but I thought belt and braces. I'll be back for some middy top kits soon from you. Great service 👏
👍👍
hii
👍🏻👍🏻
Just order a pack of 3 .. look forward to trying them ..
Going to be a touch warm over the coming day so they’ll be perfect. Especially if your able to go early in the morning or evening when fish will be rising for any fly hatch. Good luck let us know how you get on with them 👍
do you have a worm additive? I can't remember if you made your own or was it something else you made?
Have it made for us Andy, but they’re struggling to get hold of the carrier component so not had any for a while. Hopefully I’ll have some before long though.
@@SoartackleCoUk yes, everyone has the same problem, Can't get any from any brand.
Can also make them into "Sticky Maggs" using Angel Delight Desert powder from the Food Cupboard - I keep some old out of date Angel Delight just for that. Don't waste your money on Sticky Magg' powder from the Tackle shop!!
Youre doing a great job mate, thanks for all the info
Fantastically explained Mate Cheers.
Thank you Alan, Hopefully get some more done soon.
Cheers
Your welcome Steve
Can you reuse these float stops at all
Hi Steven, unfortunatly the rubber floats stop are a single use thing. Although bet someone has come up with away of rethreading them. You could use pellet waggler adaptors of which you can re use. www.soartackle.co.uk/middy-pellet-float-adaptor-2958-p.asp Hope thats of help
Nice 1 👍👍👍
Thank you 👍
Great for when on the feeder as they always remain with your groundbait and don’t riggle off👍🏻
Yes very much so. Think it’s a miss conception that maggots have to be live to use them. Dead pinkies are another great one. If your fishing a silty venue dead maggots / pinkies are the way to go. As you say they won’t burrow in to the silt
@@SoartackleCoUk on busy venues in my opinion dead’s are going to get hammered more then live bait as the fish are presuming the dead’s have been on the deck for a while 👍🏻
Yep 👍 can look more natural. Also if maggots burrow in the silt fish tend to dig for them stirring loads of crap up of the bottom which can mask any hook bait and or cause foul hooking
In northern Italy we are more or less in the same conditions with the rivers. cheers mate ...
Is that through Snow melt or just rain ?
A little bit of both ... perhaps more because of the heavy snow from the mountains and the warm weather in the last weeks ...
Click this video .. interesting..I like nature..nice video sharing..
Bloody good vidio couldn't make it any simpler 👍
Thank Mickie 😊👍
Can they be refrozen if they're not all used after thawing, or will they turn to much if frozen more than once? Cheers mate.
I’ve never tried it, might be worth ago though 👍
Yes they can be re used. Try putting them in a bait box, fill it with water and then freeze them in the water. Defrost when you want to use them and use them out of the water they were frozen in. They freeze alot better this way and look alot better than just freezing them in a bag.
