I would love to hear an update from you on how using the curriculum has played out your first term. I've been looking for reviews on this curriculum and haven't come across any. Love your videos and thanks so much for sharing all your experience and wisdom!
The short answer is we LOVE it! But, yes I should do a review/update video. I feel so much more freedom to adjust things as needed for my family because the book choices are so rich and doable.
I just printed Book 1 off the public domain 😁 How do you progress through these books? One story a day?
10-15 minutes or follow the kiddos interest
hey what head phones are those?
amzn.to/4eyTZUl
What age/grade do you start this?
Hi! After they’ve mastered their letter sounds and phonograms.
It's a solid series but for those who consider it, note that it does not align perfectly well with today's curriculum. Things have shifted a little bit because we want to prepare students for linear algebra earlier today, given its prevalence in science and engineering, and it can also be seen in the choice of material in primary and secondary school. So you might need some supplementary material. Other than that, some of the terminology and notation has also changed. Just to give a couple of examles, Ray mentions the y)x notation to mean x/y, which is only really used in long division. He also uses the term "circulating decimals" to mean "repeating decimals."
Wow!!!! Which vintage texts does she use? Also, do you have a link to the video about the vintage math you use? Thank you for sharing!

I never heard of these.
That is so smart to use the business card holder and also use it like a library!
Do you use the Original McGuffey Speller?
Hello! No I do not because I use dictation for spelling.
Hello, would you say these readers and lessons are good for struggling readers?
@@ashleymurphy4813 hmmm yes if you’ve done a good phonetic approach with them. Slow and steady with lots of review and copywork is helpful!
@@RevivalAcres thank you! That’s the plan👌🏻
I understand what you mean regarding Charlotte Mason and the basis being God, but can you explain how this curriculum is more classical than CM? I feel like it’s very CM so the comparisons I’m seeing online are confusing me!
Did you watch my interview with Amanda? That could definitely help! Mainly, we often try to divorce CM from the classical tradition but she was actually a part of it! She was influenced by the enlightenment though, so some of her recommendations aren’t always my favorite for younger kids. Her over arching ideas are spot on, especially narration and that living ideas shape and inspire. But she pulled kiddos out of the poetic mode too soon. She requires analysis through logic and rhetoric at a much younger age than what would have been in the classical tradition. She also purposefully divided subjects which I think was the age of reason seeping in along with deep rooted enlightenment (post-medieval) principles whereas the classical tradition would have grouped this much broader. For instance, one classic book could serve for all modern “subjects” (history, geography, LA, drawing, etc.). I’d recommend joining The Toolshed for a month to do a deep dive. This will also give you the ability to ask TCT members questions as well as Amanda and myself.
@@RevivalAcres thank you for this!! So helpful. I am so early on in my journey that I haven’t yet reached that point. When does Charlotte Mason go into logic and analytical thinking (which ages)? Also what is the tool shed?? I would love to join and geek out on this topic.
Can you give some examples of her recommendations for younger kids that you don’t love and what the classical tradition would offer and suggest instead? And how they support poetic knowledge? Trying to make sense of this concept 🤪
@luccalele9740 you’re welcome! The Toolshed is an off social media platform that’s for like-minded families learning about and/or using The Children’s Tradition. the-toolshed.circle.so/c/start-here/
For anyone looking for CM online community, Autumn Kern’s Common Place membership community is awesome. Lots of great education in CM philosophy and such a nice group of people for questions, conversation, and growth.
Where can I find the alphabet and phonic flash cards?
amzn.to/3XqBKuZ
Does this include handicrafts? Meaning how to do them. Thank you for this great video!
No, but there are ideas. If you join The Toolshed you will get access to other resources that TCT users have made with more suggestions! I’m about to share there my personal handicraft forecast for this year See my last community post for info. Thanks for being here!
Just found verily school house on Etsy. Love her stuff!
Thank you! So articulate and gracious in your critique (if you can even call it that?!) of CM especially in our context today. Have loved all I’ve heard about this curriculum so far (shout out to the Commonplace!), but I’m not int he formal years yet. I’m trying to wait until 6, maybe 7 years old for my first. Would Amanda have any advice for moms of littles on establishing a good base in years 0-5 to 6ish to be prepared for this beautiful trajectory?
For the little years, I’d begin reading the good books from the list in TCT which are labeled as “early years”. That’s why I love this curriculum; it truly is for the whole family! Beautifully illustrated fairy tales, classic picture books, nature lore, etc. Thank you so much for the encouragement and kind words!
I agree with the lack of community aspect. The current way of asking for comments on a random post does not in any way constitute community-building, so it's a bummer the ladies haven't found a better way to help member families connect more meaningfully. I've heard great Cons about it from multiple moms that I agree with, so who knows how much longer we'll stick with it. Having said that, I'm surprised you've gotten away with showing as much as you did considering everything we're told *not* to share about it.
I have just recently stumbled upon Amanda and TCT and decided to buy it. It sounds like I have a lot to learn myself which will be exciting to do right along with the kiddos. My questions- do y’all purchase all the books on the lists? I’m finding that to be the most stressful part. Also, time wise, how do you read for 2.5 hours with your kids a day just for school hours, not including bedtime reading?
❤ thank you regardless of the quality of the video
Just purchased them from Amazon for my daughters. We’re turning toward homeschooling and McGuffey will make up part of our curriculum.
@@frankbarron1907 love that!
Hello. I also had the same wish of wanting more communication. I don't use social media so I was really disappointed with this missing spot. This will be my second year with the CMEC with a form 2 and form 3. Since i have a middle schooler now, i really needed more hand holding so i sign up again. Next year is a maybe. How many years did you try it and for what forms?
Hi! I used it for two years Forms I and II.
@avalle05 I prayed and really desired more community this past year and this year a CMEC group started up in my City! I recommend putting yourself out there on their bulletin board to hopefully find more community. I myself am also using The CMEC to get a better hold of CM with the Mothers Education course, but I don't know that we will continue beyond this year, as well.
@missionari praise God! I too partnered up with another family using CMEC and it was so enriching and fun!
How time consuming did you find it to alter the curriculum? My children are nearly 13, 11, 10, 6 and 3. We've always used CM curriculum and have read many of the books on Seniors lower forms list, so I would need to adapt for my older three. Would y5 be enough for my 11 yo? And I'd have to craft something for my 13 yo, as Amanda said. I love the idea of TCT as AO didn't quite fit our family, but my budget (both time and financially) is small!
It actually didn’t take much time because I can group a lot of my family together! We’ve read many as a family so I am just moving down on the list through the years. She does include Y6 and Y7 in the Senior booklist so that should definitely help you. Most are also free online too.
@@RevivalAcres Thank you! Do you mind if I ask how old your y6 would be? How difficult did you find it to arrange y6 yourself? (We're coming from CMEC so I'm used to laying out our own timetable already)
@LionWolverine you’re welcome! My Y6 is 11 years old. She is actually doing more Y5 work since she hasn’t read many of those. We used CMEC too. I’m almost done our timetable, but I may try looping this year. Still undecided, but book choices have been so easy with TCT.
Thank you so much for this! I’m considering using the CMEC next year as we’re slowly transitioning to more CM style learning in our home. This was really helpful. I thinks we’ll end up trying it out and see how it works for our family. 😊
I’m so glad it was helpful to you! Enjoy!
I recently got TCT and it is fantastic!! 🎉
I feel the same 👏
😮 😊
What would you use for grades 8-12? My 12-year-old just went and had a birthday (ugh 😉 ) so I now have an 8th grader. I did purchase The Children's Tradition (using Autumn Kern's discount code), however, if it is based on the 1000 Good Books list that are meant to be read before graduation from High School, then is Amanda attempting to fit them all in by grade 6-7? Just wondering if you know how that works. Thank you !
Hi! This Substack article would probably be your best bet to understand what she has in mind for upper years. Hope that helps! open.substack.com/pub/thewonderyears/p/how-to-implement-the-philosophy-of?r=2qntaj&
Will you continue to use Mcguffey Readers alongside this curriculum?
Yes, of course!
This put together well. Thanks for sharing.
I loved this interview! Thank you both! One question I had for you was if you plan to continue to use our island story (I am around ch 30) Would you just read that and then go through other biographies even if they don't line up in that history?
I would continue if you’d like or just move to biographies. I’m still undecided to be honest. But we will do biographies recommended for sure, regardless of time period. I’m so glad it was helpful to you! Thanks for being here!
@@RevivalAcres Does TCT set the recommended biographies/historical fiction reads for each grade/year?
@@mariajscheller1284 yes!
What exactly is taught under gymnastics in TCT?
Because this is the Beta version she is still building out that piece. I know it will include things like folk dancing and Swedish drill recommendations.
What a fantastic interview! I am considering adding it to our year because I'm undecided on literature picks and I also love the idea of a long-term plan so I can rest assured that the good books won't be missed - there's a plan to get them!
It really is wonderful!
What history spine do y'all recommend?
TCT does not recommend a history spine, but rather historical novels.
Thank you! That sounds interesting - what is your option about Ambleside - do you feel the same since it's CM? I like their booklists - can I plug them into the Children's Tradition ?
I was all set to do Ambleside until I found this and I’m so glad I switched. Once I started looking at AO books I realized so many of them are asking the children to analyze ideas about things they have yet to learn/love. They also ask them to assimilate culture ideas while making connections for them. I’m thinking specifically the Foster books for an example. TCT gives the mother a philosophy that she can then expound upon into making book choices and setting the atmosphere for her children. It’s also gentle but very robust while keeping the family together as much as possible or desired. I will be keeping the AO free read books as supplement because they tend to be more classical in nature, aligning with TCT. The more I study CM through the lens of the classical tradition I see TCT fitting her philosophy better. I hope that helps in some way!
@@RevivalAcresyes! That does help - I don’t like AO so much for higher grades - but love Our Island Story 😅😂 for whatever reason … so I was only going mesh Y1-Y3 but I listened to your interview and it makes more sense and would be much more enjoyable not having specific history spines - I always felt that history really drives every curriculum which it really shouldn’t since young kids really don’t have any idea about time … thanks for your reply!
@TruthSeeker2996 I’m so glad it was of help to you!
What does this curriculum include? The website has very little info

How excited for this!
I am really trying to discern, Ambleside Online or this. Any wisdom? I read the article that she wrote that you sent me. it was great and very helpful!

It's interesting that you said that about the Foster books, I enjoyed prereading them but my children weren't fans at all, they found the books confusing with the jumping around and all of the characters.
@LionWolverine exactly! I find that with a lot of the AO core books. The free reads are fantastic but it seems the core books are definitely at a higher analytical level than appropriate for our kiddos.
What a blessing to have others share their wisdom! Thank you, ladies!
Thank YOU for being here friend!! ❤️☀️
Glad to see you back! I've looked you up from time to time the last couple years and thankful to see all is well with you and your family. Prayers and blessings to you!
That is so thoughtful and kind; thank you! Glad to be back 🥰
We love Ambleside! Im curious how thisbis different. Karen glass wrote a book called consider this showing how Charlotte Mason was classical. Autumn Kern the commonplace is a great resource as well!
I was going to use Ambleside until I found this and I think TCT is superior for grades 1-7. I will use their free read lists though!
