I was self-taught and started with the alto recorder. I had no negative past experience of prior musical lessons on any instrument, also no experience hearing out of tune little kids) on toy level recorders. In any case the prejudice is real, and wrong. There are some wonderfully played classical pieces by small groups, and also it's just fun to play, once you get some basics down.

I began playing alto during the pandemic & have kept on with it. Although I can read music I often simply play by ear & have a repertoire of around 30 songs, from the 18th century until now. I recently bought a Yamaha Eco recorder which I like a lot -- very sweet tone but still with a reasonably dynamic range to punch-out some lower notes. It's at 415, not 440. The longer I play the more closely I listen to the music I'm making. When first learning a song it's necessary to master fingering, breath, tempo, duration -- and these technical challenges can distract me from the sound. Guess I associate the recorder with the Renaissance as well as with compositions by Vivaldi & Mozart.
