Discourse analysis (DA) is a broad term for various qualitative methods that explore the structure and expression of language within its social and cultural context. It looks at the linguistic content (what's said) and language use (how it's used) in a given text to convey meaning in different social settings.
By “going beyond the word or sentence,” discourse analysis aims to grasp how language structures both texts and social contexts. [2,3] The main goal of this qualitative research approach is to provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of language and “how it becomes meaningful to users.”[4]
So, discourse analysts explore how relationships between people can shape the language they use. And also how language presents different perspectives and understandings of the world, helping us understand how it can help create and maintain social reality, power relations, and even our own identities.

    I want to analyse how the stance of a political party on a certain topic developed over time by analysing their political party programs. It seems rather logical to me to do this but I can't find any sources to back up doing it in this way. Could you provide me with some tips and sources regarding this issue? Basically to back up my method of going trough all party programs, coding them using a 3 point scale (positive, neutral, and negative towards the topic being discussed), and then looking how its stance developed towards a more positive, neutral, or negative stance on the subject discussed. Thank you in advance!

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your question! Analyzing political party programs to track changes in stance over time is a solid approach. Make sure to define clear criteria for positive, neutral, and negative stances and code consistently. Comparing documents from different periods will help you see the evolution. Also, consider the historical context for deeper insights. Good luck with your analysis!

    Great video thank you and subscribed. I like how grounded theory is being renewed in post-qualitative approaches. In fact I've found the differences between grounded theory and post-qualitative methodologies are often few in practice and philosophy. I'm writing this comment because you might be interested in viewing your final theory as an 'entanglement, 'actor-network', 'situation', or 'arena' and other such ontologies of post-qualitative researchers which can be constructed through grounded theory.

    I'm still struggling to fully understand the difference between thematic analysis and grounded theory. It feels like they should be used together or that they overlap.

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great question! Both thematic analysis and grounded theory are inductive approaches, building insights from the data itself. They share similarities in structuring insights, where grounded theory uses open, axial, and selective codes, comparable to the codes, themes, and core themes in thematic analysis. However, thematic analysis focuses mainly on analyzing data, while grounded theory covers the entire process, including data collection. For instance, theoretical sampling in grounded theory involves collecting and analyzing data iteratively using the constant comparison method, which is core to its approach. Grounded theory also has the concept of theoretical saturation, which is the point where no new insights are emerging from the data. While thematic analysis can use iterative data collection and analysis, it doesn't traditionally use the concept of theoretical sampling or saturation. There are many variations of both thematic analysis and grounded theory, so their similarities and differences will vary based on which exact method is being used. But to summarize Thematic Analysis really is a analysis method, while Grounded Theory has a larger scope as a methodology.

    What's the difference between narrative and interpretative phenomenological analysis?

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Narrative analysis focuses on the stories people tell to make sense of their experiences, whether it's one person or a group. It's an umbrella term covering various methodologies for exploring the story itself and the meaning behind it. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) also explores personal experiences but dives deeper into how individuals perceive and interpret these experiences. There's overlap between the two, but while narrative analysis looks at the story itself, IPA focuses more on individual meaning and interpretation.

    From G.T. you gather the data- THEN derive theory. BUT If- for example one was to start a dissertation etc. how do you start with a theory, the focus of you r Dissertation- if you have to gather data first? chicken/egg - or am i missing something?

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good news, there's no chicken and egg paradox in grounded theory (GT), as you should start with a topic of interest (the focus of your dissertation), however, you should not start with a theory. It's the data you gather that guides how you will explore your topic of interest. This method ensures that the theory you develop is genuinely informed and shaped by your findings, allowing for a more organic emergence of theory directly from the data itself. It's worth noting, though, that there's a methodological debate within the GT community on how much you should allow existing theories to influence your thinking. Classical grounded theory advocates for minimizing prior knowledge to avoid bias, emphasizing an approach closer to a blank slate. On the other hand, constructivist grounded theory acknowledges the inevitability of researchers' preconceptions and sees value in letting existing theories inform the research process to some extent. Despite these differences, both approaches agree on starting with a topic of interest, ensuring the research remains grounded in the data collected.

    Hi! I have a question. Is it possible to do narrative analysis when the only participant is the researcher himself/herself? Or does it really require the researcher to look for other people to do this method? Thanks!

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Certainly, narrative analysis can be effectively conducted with the researcher as the sole participant, particularly through autoethnography. This method involves the researcher analyzing their own personal experiences to uncover broader insights. It emphasizes the importance of reflexivity, where researchers critically examine their own biases and perspectives to ensure their analysis transcends personal narratives to touch on universal themes. While this approach provides rich, detailed insights, it requires careful consideration of subjectivity and ethical concerns, making reflexivity crucial for meaningful analysis. Some of this video may be as relevant, particularly the parts where you are finding patterns across narratives. So the approach may need to be adjusted some as it's presented here. This video assumes that you are interviewing more than one person

    • @tahanancinema
      @tahanancinema 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DelveTool Thank you so much! Can the same be done to thematic analysis if the sole participant is the researcher thru autoethno?

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@tahanancinema yeah you certainly can. Narrative analysis tends to work with less data. With thematic analysis with authoethno, you'd want to probably collect a fair amount of data. And maybe even across a number of different mediums. You may also want to collect information over time. Thematic Analysis is quite a flexible methodology so it definitely can work. Full disclosure I don't have direct experience with doing autoethnography and Thematic Analysis, but it definitely could work. You may want to put a heavy focus on reflexivity, and may want to consider recruiting someone to be a peer debriefer

    • @DelveTool
      @DelveTool 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I personally would disagree with you there. AI can definitely help with certain parts of process and I'm curious how this will evolve over time. But the researcher brings a lot of their own insight and life experience to analyzing data. Two different people will analyze data in two different ways, and to abdicate all meaning-making to AI would imply that there is one correct answer. When in fact both ways can valid forms of analysis. I've played around using AI to analyze data, and by itself it tends to find surface level themes from the data. With some guidance from a human it can be nudged to discover some more nuanced and insightful themes. But a human is still critical to the process. That's my take at least, I'm curious what you have found in your own experience!

    what graph could i use to show the frequencies of themes? i was thinking of pie graph to represent the frequencies of themes in my 90 respondents. however, there are a lot of cases where one respondent can show 2 themes. i wonder how should i present the data in terms of graphs/charts?

      So I personally avoid trying to show frequency of themes in thematic analysis. As frequency does not necessarily equate to relevance in Thematic Analysis. (this is not a hard fast rule, but just our preference for TA)
