I want to finish Powerless by Lauren Roberts,The Pumpkin Spice Cafe by Laurie Gilmore,Powerful by Lauren Roberts. It’s the novella in the series with Powerless and Reckless. The Cinnamon Bun Bookstore #2 Dreamharbor series.
I hope you feel better soon. My sister and I are going to buddy read One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez in January. I'm also going to read Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher.
I plan to read the classic ‘Catch-22,’ by Joseph Heller.
I read it a few years ago for Big Book Summer, Jess. It's an unusual novel with a dark sense of humor. I hope you enjoy it!
Looks like some good choices for the final part of the year. I hope you start to feel a little better. I'm the type of reader where I place holds or just borrow whatever might be available from the library - so it's always a bit of a surprise to see what holds come in and what I'll read
Oh, that sounds like a fun way to read! I've only just recently begun requesting new audio releases that I really want to read (like The Mighty Red by Louise Erdrich) through Libby, and it's a nice surprise when one with a very long wait list suddenly becomes available!
“Uva Uvam Vivendo Varia Fit” is the latin quote on the Hat Creek livery sign its also a tattoo on my arm! Perfect book!
I loved that!! Especially when I looked up what it meant. That sign was fabulous!
Hope you feel better soon Sue. Way to gut it out and give us some insight into your reading week!
Thanks, Kevin!
Dead Wake is on one of my e-readers. I've liked everything I've read by Larson (although the Demon of Unrest was read at an interesting time...), so I really need to get to that one!
He's such a good writer!
BRIAN DOYLE! I haven't read Chicago yet, but it is on my TBR bookshelf! I have loved everything I've ever read by him! I think it might actually skip the queue based on your thoughts! (also, another great dog in a book is Six-Thirty in Lessons in Chemistry. I don't know if you've read that one, but I recommend it!) I so hope you guys pick up Mink River! If nothing else, it gives them a taste of the Pacific Northwest and the Oregon Coast. I'm sorry that you are still dealing with a flare up--this is such a busy time of year and I'm guessing that makes it harder to avoid flair ups. Take care of yourself! Silly question...is it snowy where you are? I can't tell by looking at the window behind you! We've been having clear, but cold weather.
Clear and cold here, too :) You can't tell what's through the window because our bushes have grown so tall that they cover that window completely! We're having them all taken out this winter (all about 40 years old) so we can replant some prettier native shrubs for spring. Yes! I was trying to think of Six-Thirty (we also mentioned him at book group), but the brain fog and especially word-finding difficulty were bad when I recorded this - just to come up with the octopus in Remarkably Bright Creatures (you must read it if you haven't yet!) required about 5 minutes of staring into space that I had to edit out ha ha. We thought it was interesting that Doyle wrote so compellingly about Chicago and also about Oregon (according to you, which I told them). Mink River is definitely on my list! Thanks for your kind thoughts. Yes, this flare-up has been a bad one - about 2 months now. Worst part is that I still don't know WHY which makes it impossible to treat. Same thing happened to me at this time last year, and yes, you're right - it's a very difficult time to be sick with so much I want to do! I was a tiny bit better today (other than recording this, I rested all day yesterday) and was able to go to a tiny store near us for a few minutes today :) Small victories.
Ok you sold me on Chicago and I've added it to my TBR. Hope your flare up starts to subside. I know my Fibro has been really bad too. I've been blaming it on the weather, although I have no idea if that's true.
Hope you enjoy Chicago! Let me know what you think. sigh ... yes, the weather is unfortunately a factor - frustrating since we can't do anything about it. I crashed at the same time last year, so I'm wondering if the change in season is a factor - and possibly mold exposure since I got worse about the time we had to close up the house instead of having the windows open. The constant guessing game is exhausting in itself! I hope your fibro flare calms down soon.
@@SueJacksonDE I totally agree, the guessing game is exhausting. Hopefully the month improves for us both. :)
Love your content. I hope you find a treatable cause for your ailments. Happy Xmas from Ireland.
Thank you! That's very kind. I've had this immune disorder for 23 years, so I know the cause, and I have found plenty of treatments that help a little bit. Unfortunately, sometimes, there is just nothing to do but rest and wait. I appreciate the kind words. Merry Christmas to you, too!
I'm reading Starter Villain by John Scalzi. I like the living room view out the window better than the book background. Hope you are feeling better. Windy and bitter cold in Ohio. brrrr
I've heard great things about Starter Villain - hope you're enjoying it. Glad you liked the view :) Windy, cold, and bitter here in Delaware, too!
Sounds like you had a fantastic NF November Reading experience! I agree with your review of Knighton's 'Leave Only Footprints.' I started reading it recently and am enjoying it *so much* already! 'Nowhere for Very Long' sounds like a very intriguing memoir! I've been enamored with the idea of the nomad life for many years and truly hope to make it happen, at least part-time, in the not-too-distant future. 😎 Thanks for sharing your current reads, Sue! ~ Kim
Nowhere for Very Long is definitely intriguing! Our longest road trips with our pop-up camper have been 3 week trips each summer when our kids were young (they're adults now). We got a new-to-us hybrid camper this year (so a bit easier to travel with), and next year, we hope to take some month-long road trips and travel a lot more. So, keep an eye out for more travel vlogs next year!
@SueJacksonDE That sounds like great fun, Sue! I look forward to following along with your travels. 😊
I really enjoy hearing what you are reading, and you inspire me to add a title or two to my library holds list. I read Framed by Grisham and Jim McCloskey. I will admit, I felt so upset by some of the stories I kept thinking about them and had a little trouble falling asleep - but I'm glad I read it.
I definitely want to read Framed, though I agree - it's a very upsetting topic. I read Grisham's NF An Innocent Man, and my #1 NF book last year was The Sun Does Shine by Anthony Ray Hinton, an innocent man who lived on death row for decades before finally being exonerated. It's such an important - and yes, disturbing - topic. Hopefully, Grisham's huge reader base will bring even more attention to the issues. So glad to hear you're getting some good reading ideas from my book videos!
On your recommendation I read Sunshine and loved it . What a beautiful heartwarming book. I cried a bit too. It reminded me in Junior high school when I volunteered at our local Cerebral Palsy center. It was a real eye opener for me. I was amazed how quickly I was able to look past their disabilities and connect with them as the wonderful people they were.
Oh, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, Ann! And, wow, what an incredible experience to have at such a young age. Maybe volunteering like that should be a requirement when kids are young to help build life-long empathy!
Happy Holidays Sue! Nice set of books you read!
Thanks, Todd!
My non-fiction November could be called Memoir Month. I read Ron and Cliff Howard's book "The Boys," "Leslie F*cking Jones," and "Life Among the Savages" by Shirley Jackson. All very unique and good. I probably enjoyed The Boys the most, possibly because I'm the biggest fan of Ron Howard's (compared to the other authors). I intend to read some Christmas-y books in December, but so far it's been thriller and horror!
Sounds great! Memoir is my favorite kind of NF book. I just bought The Boys for my husband for his birthday, so I look forward to reading it when he's finished :)
These are amazing! I loved Dead Wake. Erik Larson does a really great job. I have liked every book I have read of his.
Yes, me, too! Especially Devil in the White City and In the Garden of Beasts. My husband says The Splendid and the Vile is his favorite, but I haven't read it yet.
Oh gosh, your books all sound amazing! I want to read them all! I started all of my Nonfiction November books, but haven't finished two yet... I'm going to count it as a success anyway! 😅
Definitely count it!!
Thanks for doing this video! I need to get refocused on my diet. My immune system has been in overdrive.
Mine, too!! As I explained in the video, I've had flu-like aches every day for 6 weeks (going on 7 now) - ugh. Hope you get some relief soon and that diet helps :) It's a tough time of year to focus on diet, but cutting down on inflammatory foods can help you feel better for the holidays :)
Keto has been tested for Schizophrenia. For some it works. Its managing symptons with diet instead of the medication.
Wow, that's great! I hadn't heard that, but that could be life-changing for some since the meds have side effects. Thanks for the info!
This is a really great analysis of the options for MECFS helpful diets! I've been borderline diabetic (a couple times labeled as diabetic due to blood sugar results) and controlling it with diet. About 7 years ago was strict/no junk/ all home made Vegetarian and gaining weight. I gave in and tried Low Carb, then "Keto". I've been very happy Keto for the last 7 years and am pretty strict. No starchy veggies for me. No sugars - natural or not. I do Monk fruit sweeteners and recently have struggled with energy so have been "lazy food prep" meaning low carb tortillas with cheese and purchased shredded chicken. I just recently redid bloodwork and the A1C was bad. So I'm back to really, really strict meal timing and high fat, home made foods. No sweets of any kind except sugar free syrup in my morning coffee
Glad to hear keto has helped you! I was stunned by how much better my bloodwork was this year after carnivore/keto since I was already eating a fairly strict, "healthy" diet. With the yeast overgrowth, I can't have anything sweet at all (I miss fruit!) - just stevia. So glad you found what works for you!
Love this! I'm low carb mostly for weight reasons, but that's all connected to thyroid and hormones, which are a little iffy for me. My best friend is carnivore because she has a myriad of health issues, including being prediabetic with Type I diabetes (very unusual at her age). Carnivore is the only thing that keeps her health monsters at bay.
So interesting! I am mostly familiar with our own immune disorder (my son and I) and other similar diseases. Great to hear these kinds of diets work for other health problems as well. My thyroid is a LOT iffy (and the whole endocrine system, thanks to the immune disorder), so it's good to hear low-carb has helped you in that respect. Thanks for taking the time to comment and sharing!
This is such a fun tag! Loved your ideas about your dream library/bookshop.
This is a fun one!
Glad you created a compromise diet that works well for you. Excellent explanations.
Thanks! Glad it was clear 😀
The effects that diet can have on our health are amazing. I'm a vegetarian, and I follow a Low FODMAP diet for the most part. It helps a lot with my IBS and food issues. I also eat gluten-free and dairy-free, and that's how I found Danielle Walker's book 'Against the Grain' years ago. Lots of great recipes.
Yes! It’s one of our favorites! Glad you found what works for you!
true
I’m going to ask my doctor about Paxlovid, thank you! Does your book you wrote have advice on how to treat ME/CFS, or do you recommend your blog? My doctors don’t know how to treat or do anything to help my ME/CFS. Have you looked into lymphatic drainage massages? I’m mostly bedridden and it’s the only thing that has helped me. It helps lift my weight of fatigue (though I can’t do more than before I don’t feel heavy with fatigue) and it helps pain. It could also help your yeast overgrowth maybe? Sorry you have felt so horrible. I’m definitely scared about the upcoming winter and the permanent damage it can do to me. Praying for you and your family!✝️
Hi, Ruby - thanks for taking the time and energy to comment! No I haven't tried lymphatic drainage but I've heard others mention it, too. To clarify, my book is more about emotional coping and how to find joy even in a life limited by illness - it's got lots of practical tips but is for anyone with any kind of chronic medical condition that limits them, not ME/CFS specifically. However, my blog has LOTS of information on treatments, testing, new research, etc. specific to ME/CFS. In the notes below this video (click on "... more" at the end of the video description below the video), scroll down to the Effective Treatments for ME/CFS link - that will take you to my blog page that provides a summary of all the many treatments that have helped my son and I - he's working full-time now (!) and I am usually able to function pretty well. The links on that page will take you to more information on whichever treatments you want to learn about or look into. I recommend beginning by 1) Correcting Sleep Dysfunction and 2) Treating Orthostatic Intolerance - those 2 areas brought the biggest improvements for us.
@ Thanks again!!! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Wow you've had some great reading! Glad your electricity came back on. That would be so frustrating, but it seems like you were able to make it work.
Me, too! It was starting to get chilly!
I live in CA and the power companies will turn our power off for days at a time when there is high fire danger (usually this time of year). A lot of houses now have whole-house generators. It’s awful! I think the longest we’ve gone was 5 days. I hope your power is back soon!
Oh it came back on, I commented too soon! 🎉
ha ha No problem - I comment as I watch, so that happens to me all the time! Wow, that's awful - I didn't realize they did that in CA. Those fires have been just horrific the past few years especially. We've been in this house for 30 years now and used to have very steady, reliable power - underground wires and NEVER went out for more than a minute or two. Then, in 2020, the electric company changed the back of our neighborhood (where we live) to connect it to the neighborhood behind us - which has above-ground wires and lots of trees! Now, it goes out constantly. Worst was 7 days in August 2020 when it was 95+ degrees and high humidity all week.
@@SueJacksonDEyes they started doing it out here after the Paradise fire when the power company was liable! I live in the town that had the gender reveal fire and I actually work for the Fire District. It’s nonstop! In the town I used to live in we had underground wires and they’d still turn it off - we were soooo frustrated! I’m not sure of the logic behind it but they continue to do it.
@@melissachapman7027 Sounds rough. Those CA fires on TV always look horrific. Glad you are safe!
I have Dead Wake on one of my e-readers. I think I actually have all of Erik Larson's books, but have only read The Devil in the White City and The Demon of Unrest...and the audio novella he put out a couple of years ago. I totally understand having an itch for fiction. I can't read just nonfiction during November, so I always have a novel going on at the same time (but I'm a book polygamist, so even if I don't only read NF in November, I can read NF all November!)
I have all of his too and I think I’ve read one…😅
Yeah, if I also had a novel going, I'd probably never finish the NF book! ha ha In the Garden of Beasts was an excellent Larson book.
@@BooksInkandPaper My favorites are Devil in the White City (reads like a thriller) and In the Garden of Beasts. I haven't yet read The Splendid and the Vile (about Churchill during WWII), but my husband said that's his favorite. Interestingly, Larson talks about Churchill in Dead Wake (WWI), too.
I'm reading The Pumpkin Spice Cafe which is a small town romance book. I'm reading it on my kindle.
I just finished that one yesterday. It was a nice palate cleanser for me.
Hope you're enjoying it!
Every time you talk about Booktopia, I want to go! Northshire sounds like a fantastic store!
You would LOVE Booktopia!! Wish you lived on the East Coast :)
Nowhere for Long looks like a book I would enjoy. I'll have to add that one to my list. I finished The Wedding People and now I just started Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout. Glad to see your power came back on. Have a great weekend.
Thanks! Very exciting to have heat and wifi back :) I haven't read any Elizabeth Strout since Olive Kitteridge, but I really want to catch up on her books. This one sounds best for those whp have read them all and know the characters. Hope you enjoy it!
I read Nowhere for Long a couple of years ago. I only gave it 3 stars some people at the time thought she stretched the truth a little... but I can't say for sure. Your electric came on while you were making the video.
I know! I talked about that in the video :) Big excitement for me ha ha I'm enjoying Nowhere so far.
Oh fun! Thank you for the tag! I've been so busy lately, and the weather is cold and wet and the world is taking scary turns, so it's been hard to feel motivated to make videos. But now I'm feeling inspired. We could definitely all do with some wishful thinking. I hope your chronic illness lets you have a better period soon. Going to check out your bookstore tour vlogs now.
Yes, that's just what I was thinking! I hope you enjoy this tag as much as I did!
Sorry to hear you haven’t been feeling well! That bookstore looked so quaint and how I wish my area had an event like Booktopoa! Love this tag and I thank you so much for tagging me. I did this one but I’m so happy you thought of me.
Great! I'll have to check out your video. I probably missed it because this tag video has been in my backlog for a long time, even though I answered the questions and chose who to tag a LONG time ago!
@ happens to me all the time because there’s so many great tags and so many booktubers I follow 🙂
Northshire -- if I could fly I would go there now. I loved your take on the tag, Sue. You really know how to let your imagination go
Thanks for creating this fun tag! I enjoyed doing it.
I have a genetic disorder called 22q. It's a micro deletion of the 22nd chromosome. It's only found in people with congenital heart defects. It has caused my congenital heart defects called Tetralogy Of Fallot With Absent Pulmonary Valve, my scoliosis which is now causing severe daily pain. I have a very tight achilles tendon tendon. I'll have my third surgery on my right achilles tendon on December 6th. My scoliosis has caused my muscles in my legs to be very spastic and tight by my nerves not getting the message to the muscles to relax instead of being tight all the time.I walk with forearm crutches or my walker. After surgery no putting weight on my right ankle for 6 weeks. It'll be about six months of recovery. I'll have physical therapy twice a week. The bottom of my back hurts so much due to my scoliosis. The MRI I had over 10 years ago show that I have two curves along with my spine being completely twisted around on itself. I just took a second dose of my narcotic pain medication since the pain won't go down to my baseline pain level tonight. I'm so lucky to have a wonderful primary care doctor who will listen to me and she does very thorough exams. I'm so grateful that she provides me with my narcotic pain medication to give me the best quality of life possible. I also have a wonderful pain management doctor who agrees that treatment with narcotics along trigger point injections and doing aquatic therapy with my neighbor who does aquatic therapy in the indoor heated pool in the condo building I live in with my mom. My medical team lets me have 10 minutes in the hot tub to let me relax and help my pain. It really helps my muscles in my legs to relax. Since my congenital heart team changed my beta blocker dose a few months ago to a higher dose I'm feeling so much better. My atrial tachycardia isn't bothering me nearly as much as it was on the lower dose of beta blocker. My main pediatric cardiologist said echo and EKG look great! He's so happy with how I'm doing. Other then the chronic fatigue due to the right side of my heart having to work harder then a normal heart. My beta blocker and Digoxin are working well. I'll see my congenital heart team again in a year which is the best thing I can hear from my congenital heart team!
Wow, it sounds like some very complex medical issues - I can relate! So glad you have some good doctors and have found some treatments that help. Thank you for sharing your story.
You know, you could have books in every room of the house AND a big library!
Ooooh! Yeah, I want THAT!
What a fun tag, Sue! Your answers were great, and I could really picture your dream library and your dream bookstore! ❤ I definitely want to watch the vlogs of the great bookstores you talked about - and whatever Booktopia is, it sounds like a lot of fun! 😁 Thank you so much for tagging me - and for your words of support! I hope you're feeling a bit better this week. 😊 ~ Kim
Thanks, Kim! Still in rough shape but enjoying Booktube while I rest today :) Booktopia is this unique (and amazing) annual event held in Manchester, VT - a whole weekend with about 100 or so readers and about 8 authors. It's very interactive - the authors hang out with us all weekend, we eat meals together, play book trivia, plus each author does multiple "talks" -but not traditional one-way speeches, more like book group discussions. Really fun and many of us go back each year! Hope you enjoy the tag and get some new subscribers, too.
@SueJacksonDE That sounds so cool, Sue! It reminds me of the Cozy Mystery Festival in Oregon, but more casual and interactive. 😊
I’m sorry you’ve had such a terrible crash. Flu-like aches for over a month! I can’t even imagine. You’re in my thoughts.
Almost all M.E patients have flu aches 24/7 every day. I've been having them for years non stop
Thank you, Pat - I appreciate your kind words and your thoughts.
@@AlbaLynxQueen Those are symptoms of immune dysfunction and there are lots of treatments that can help! That's why this is unusual for me right now, and I normally function quite well. I included links in the notes (click on ...More in the description below the video) to articles on Treating Immune Dysfunction in ME/CFS and Effective Treatments for ME/CFS. Most of the treatments are inexpensive and readily accessible, so check it out. Treatments can take some trail and error to find just the right combination for you, but it is so worth it!
@@SueJacksonDE thank you, Sue. But I've tried almost everything known in this community. Nothing has made a big difference. In my country there is no such diagnosis as M.E. No doctors to help. But most drugs can be bought OTC, except for psych drugs. So I have tried everything except for LDN and similar at this point. Your diet would be the death of me, because I have very high uric acid and prone to gout. So no huge ammounts of meat or inosine for me, lol.
Thank you, Sue! Your video brought much-needed sunshine. Triassic cracked me up. I'll have to give Leave Only Footprints a try. Ania, from Well-traveled Books and co-host of Climathon 2024, recommends Conor Knighton's book highly as well. Continuing to read dangerously and deeply is necessary, especially now.
So glad to hear you enjoyed the video, and it made you laugh! Conor's whole book is like that - he has a great sense of humor. Thanks for the rec - I hadn't been to Ania's channel yet.
Sorry to hear about your health crash, Sue. I know how frustrating it can be - not knowing why or what to do *and* not being able to do all the things you want and/or need to do. I can understand why your doctor retiring is so difficult for you. We live in a very rural area, and doctors are always just stay for a year. 🙄 That's been very hard for both me (w/ several chronic illness issues) and my daughter (w/ a neurological genetic disorder). The lack of sunlight in winter is such a drain on me, too. Seasonal Affective Disorder is real. Nature definitely can contribute greatly to our health. What you were saying about that reminds me of 'The Nature Fix' by Florence Williams. Anyway, I'm glad you're (maybe) getting a handle on this current flare, and I hope you feel much better soon. Currently, I'm dealing with balance issues and falling - not so great. Just need to be a lot more careful. 😊
Thanks for the kind words. Wow, that must be really hard to have doctors constantly leaving. I've had the same one for 22 years! I've written a lot about how nature helps health. And as I type this, I am back out on the deck, catching those last few minutes of sun!
I am often grateful for the fact that my chronic illness (about 25 years' worth, not ME/CFS) came to an end with menopause. I'd been told that it might, but because I seemed to be the exception to every other thing I'd been told during the disease, I dared not even hope! I too had a doctor who saved my life. When she decided to retire, she chose me as the first patient to tell, and I told her that she would long be in my family's stories of what a difference a good doctor can make in a person's life. I miss her still.
Debbie, that is so fabulous!! Menopause just about killed me, until my doctor (another great one who just retired, my OB/GYN) put me on estrogen patches & progesterone. She said I'll probably have to stay on them long-term, but luckily, she passed me onto another excellent GYN who understands my situation. Yes, I told my doctor last week that she is mentioned in the very first chapter of my book for her role in improving my life! I'm so happy for you that your illness is behind you now :)
All the best! I wish I could drive a car or read books. I hope it will be possible at some point soon ... Tried carnivore for 6 months, improved my mental clarity but I felt physically weaker so I stopped it 😊
Interesting that it made you feel weaker. All that protein should have helped with energy. Have you considered keto? That's high fat, moderate protein, and low carb - very good for those with chronic illnesses. I have a video that I need to finish editing all about diet for chronic illness, covering paelo, keto, and carnivore. I hope to finally get it posted next week! Have you tried audio books?
It sounds so frustrating to not know why this crash happens to you in the fall. It looks like a great idea to sit out on the deck and get some sun.
Thanks for your kind words. Yes, the sunshine and sights & sounds of nature help! I wish it were still camping season :) Did you say you have chronic health problems as well? The mystery crashes are definitely the worst!
@SueJacksonDE I don't have any chronic health problems. I subscribed to your channel after your Trap Pond video and it was a great surprise to see you post reading stuff too. I love hiking and reading.
@@hikingoutdoorfamily Yes, I remember that. But it's been amazing how many people I meet on here who make travel, outdoors, or book videos but have chronic health issues behind the scenes. I mis-remembered! Glad you are healthy :)
sorry if I overheard it Sue but have you ever eaten Keto? All the Best from Austria.
Yes, I talked in this video and in many previous ones about diet. Stricter than keto right now - about 95% carnivore, in order to help control the yeast overgrowth (yeast feed on carbs). I linked in the notes to my video on carnivore diet, and I have one coming up next week on. Paleo, Keto, and Carnivore diet options for chronic illness.
@@SueJacksonDE Thank you I will watch.
Have you ever been vegetarian or vegan? If so how did you do on that diet
I hope you feel better soon. I too am in a flare and seem to been in one for most of the time now. I rarely have good days. I seem to get worse every year.
@@premadimauro2691 definitely not - I need as much protein as I can get! My body has enough trouble making energy :) Plus, I have to strictly limit carbs, as I explained in this video, due to severe chronic yeast overgrowth (very common in ME/CFS due to our kind of immune dysfunction). I'm eating about 95% meat, fish, poultry, eggs right now with just small amounts of cruciferous veggies with lunch and dinner (yeast doesn't like those).
Hi Sue, sending you love from Belgium ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks! Hope you are well.
Absolutely lovely! I'm sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling well!
Thanks! Still struggling but trying to get my daily dose of nature! (and books)
Do you have hypomobility?
No, I don't, though it's very common in those with ME/CFS - the two likely share some genes.
Ive read some lyme tests flag up positive to mould especially in autism
Thanks - I've never heard of that. Probably depends on the test - some are specific to the bacteria that cause Lyme.
