We used Apologia Biology and it was horrible! It was our first time using Apologia and never again. They are using Berean Builders Chemistry and it’s going much better.

I agree about Guest Hollow. I’ve used almost all of the Sonlight levels. Besides my high schoolers I’m also using HBL’s K, B and F.

My 10th graders are using Sonlight British Lit and it’s going very well. I read a day ahead each day and it’s provided a time for discussion between the 3 of us.

I am sorry mom! My kids are a lot younger. The oldest is 11 but I can empathize. I am almost 100% sure he has ADHD and a little Dislexia, so it has been extremely exhausting for me to teach him. He is pretty bright and an incredible thinker! Very mature for his age and so insightful but when it comes to LA and Math it is hard to teach him. But actually it makes everything else hard because I can’t just give him a book and expect him to answer a series of questions. Usually for his Literature textbook in Spanish (my kids are completely bilingual), he reads the text silently, then the next day I read it aloud to him, and on a third day he reads it aloud to me and by then he answers the questions. He should be doing 6th grade level work and he has 4th grade books for most things. And I still have to take things that slowly 😓 We do it kind of that same way for his Literature Studies in English but that is how slow they are scheduled (we use Memoria Press for Literature.) But you know… this year has been much better. Just acknowledging that he has to reread and we need to discuss the lesson together has really helped us. Something else I was going to say is: Have you heard of Focus On Chemistry for High School? It is a faith neutral curriculum available at Rainbow Resource that I used all through Elementary. We used from Chemistry to Astronomy and I love that program because it really breaks things down to a very basic level. I have a friend that did a review on TH-cam of several high school chemistry curriculums and that one seemed the easiest. (DDC Homeschool) I also have to share that I NEVER understood Chemistry in Junior High nor High School. It was a nightmare. I don’t know how I passed! I never understood it… Until I studied with my son, even though we were only learning elementary level concepts, it was wonderful to have all those aha moments with the Focus On series by Real Science 4 Kids/Teens. I looove jigsaw puzzles. That one looks so hard 😂 Check out Magic Puzzle company puzzles. They’re so fun! Those are my favorite. I’m curious to what your daughter pics for next year. I was looking at Guest Hollow biology or physics. It’s a literature based course. Forensic science is at the top of my son’s list but I think we’ll wait one more year for that. If you’ve seen my 9th grade curriculum update you will see that I “outsourced” a bunch subjects that my 9th grader and I struggle with… not always the solution, but that was ours. I’m hearing you… it’s so hard to teach children/teens who refuse to be taught :(

I just wanted to say that I’m right there with you. Feeling defeated and burnt out. I also have an 11th and 9th grader. My 11th grader seems to have no intrinsic motivation or drive for anything school related. We are plugging along, but it’s a constant struggle of “why do I need to learn this? I’m never going to use this.” I just want him to like learning and want to do well 😭 He’s neurotypical as far as I know and doesn’t have any diagnoses, but I’m blaming it on starting him too early and expecting too much from him in the early years when we were just starting out on our homeschooling journey. He has a very part time job which he loves, but has no idea what he wants to do after graduation. Which I’m fine with, but it’s still daunting. Anyway, just letting you know that you are not alone. May our Christmas breaks be restful and prayerful, and let us return in Jan with clear minds and wisdom to move forward. Merry Christmas ❤

Do you know about Masterbooks Academy? They have supplemental video courses for several of their classes, including chemistry. 😊 We are using it for Biology next year.

Fahrenheit 451 is SO good. I loved it in high school. I re-read it recently as an adult and it was even better. Disturbing, but it's happening ;) The way people drive is so accurate.

Oh my goodness , Curious George Christmas is a fan favorite in our house. Does NOT matter how old my kids are , it’s a must watch
