The Secret to Success in Melee | Interview with Lucky
New rising star JuGS86 Shares his experience rising into the limelight after his breakout major performance at Wavelength 2024!
Thanks to Lucky for taking the time to interview and talk together about his run and his legacy in melee! Let me know if the full uncut interview is something you’d want to listen to.
I originally planned on integrating the interview into my first lucky video, but the timeline between editing and conducting the interview was too spaced out, so I wanted to do a spiritual part 2, to hear lucky’s side of one of the coolest runs of the year! This interview wasn’t based around describing steps to success, but I find it fitting and interesting to see how his answers align with his success at this major tournament.

luckyyyyy i’m so drunk 😭😭🙏🏼
Fit Lucky and Fit Mango gonna be so lit!
13:00 M2K's peach is just about the worst example of "carving your own identity with a character". M2K's Peach is about as close to 0 character identity possible, he just spams a very limited set of options with no clear objective sometimes, not playing a character but just an incomplete data set.
You've created an entire identity for his peach in this response, a character piloting purely fundamentals of a toolkit for one particular matchup! And if you are able to remember and identify all these marks about his peach, I'd argue that's more concretely an identity than so many others 😂! You can hate his peach or anyone's characters, I don't really care either way! I appreciate sharing your angle!
@ I guess I think I meant “character identity” in terms of how it fits the character, Peach, not in terms of an identity in how he plays them. This is not a diss on M2K’s Peach by the way, it’s just an anomaly in the history of the game. (A very funny anomaly though) If I could describe M2K’s Peach in one sentence, it would be “Playing purely to win against Ice Climbers, by not playing to win.” I guess you are right, I could clearly identify M2K’s peach and I could probably summarize it in a paragraph. Should I do it here, for comment section’s sake?

Loving the music choices early on in the video! Long live melee. Excited to watch the rest of this!
Osrs music and home
How is this the luckiest player in history? I would call that run mildly lucky at best. I get that the title is supposed to be a play on words since it's about Lucky, but nobody would know that before clicking on the video. Also insanely misleading thumbnail, just straight up clickbait. Way too much filler at the beginning and end of the video, and the middle is just boring af since you talk in a monotone voice and just summarize what happens in each match with generic videogame OST in the background. Videos like these are why youtube video essays get such a bad rep. I know you can do better than this
@joemkdd thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Your comment is actually disgusting I know you can do better than this

Is there a comprehensive list of all major winners in Melee? I would love to see the list
Saw the vid. Like the quality and editing. cheers man, keep it up. 5 years strong.
This tournament was a real shake up man. And seeing Moky dominate with the consistency Cody usually has, honestly I am shocked he really didn't win one sooner. Aklo was the real eye catcher, I honestly think Link and DK are gonna be main stays after next year at this rate. The consistency can't be ignored.
@debeb5148 I really think this tournament set the tone for 2025 being one of melee's best years yet, you said it so well.
@@StarkDoes I was honestly rooting for Aklo, but Moky REALLY deserved this tournament. He didn't drop a single set to anyone. It's why Mango trashing on the win makes no sense tbh.
@@StarkDoes I will even go as far to say with the consistency Moky was working with that day he really could have beaten Mango. His attitude towards the major is completely disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. That type of arrogance is mango's downfall. He thinks he's the best and gets fucking washed when he doesn't do the work.
In the middle of this video, I realised how niche of a content I was actually watching, and it felt amazing to witness that this even exists lol

DPOTG was legendary in reviving how exciting and competitive Melee could be in what many considered to be a "boring" year. :')
I thought this year was exciting, and even with that in mind, don't park blew away my expectations and totally has my vote for tourney of the year!
Im just happy Hbox and Trif didnt win. We need winners with testosterone in their bodies.
This is such a weird comment lol. Stop thinking about other people's bodies so much!
No falcos didn’t count (jk)

god damn i love lucky hes def always been one of my favorite players. awesome video dude
God was smiling at moky that day, he got to dodge both nicki and Zain, both of which would have likely knocked him out.
It’s insane people support mango being a salty grimer so hard Let the man have his victory dude
It's the same shit with Leffen. He is amazing at the game so he can act however he wants.
But because Mango is cool, people REALLY don't see it that way. Then he can just turn around and say "It was just jokes"
Mango already talking shit and trying to devalue the tournament since he didnt attend. That's yall GOAT tho?
Never liked him much, it's just cool to see him explode and destroy the competition sometimes. His attitude here is unprofessional as fuck.
I haven’t been watching Melee for a good while, but its cool to see Moky win one. Dude has had it coming for a good while.
Mango could have prevented this 😞
Close enough. Welcome back, Walt from the JV5.
Great story telling! One can tell you speak with a lot of passion and love for this game
@@tokorothhh thank you so much!!! :)
Aklo over Moky rankings wise tbh
Comparing Magi to Mango and Plup is crazy.
Magi has wins on both, and is a top 20 player - which is exactly the context of why all three are mentioned lol don't be weird
@@StarkDoes Being 2-35 against someone doesn't put you on their level, sorry.
@billwoods7578 I'll try and say this even more clearly for you: when documenting who in the top 20 did not attend this tournament, those are the three who didn't show up, all are incredible players, and there is NO comparison being made If you can't understand why they are all grouped together after this, I'm sorry my channel isn't for you :(
@@StarkDoes Magi isn't an incredible player. I'm sorry my guy.

Awesome video for a major I unfortunately missed :( thanks for catching us up with all the stories and side runs ❤
if u only look at top 8, you think he got pretty good bracket luck, and then u see he played cody in like winners round 3 like what

@ yay! you’re welcome <3 There’s now an official VOD on Galint Gaming’s channel which is even better quality so my work is done haha
man I love moky but this micky mouse cinderella run really doesnt mean anything to me like yeah you won the tourney but dodging zain really makes this run feel hollow like all you did was beat aklo and a not in top shape cody schwab he did win winners side in grands tho so at least that means something. cant wait for moky's next win hopefully that run will be real
Mickey Mouse because he only beat Trif, the current number 2 player in the world, a refined Hungrybox and Aklo who is THE MOST IN FORM player in the entire world rn? Moky did win over everyone who was set infront of him at the most stacked event of the year, where top players always drop like flies and beating half of the current top 6 and a borderline top 10 player in Trif is mad impressive, especially considering that every single one of those guys did beat moky in their last encounter with him. There is 0 reason to act like this was some kind of fraud run.
@rannynihilius8481 didn't see he beat triff which honestly isn't anything bc triff hasn't won anything. Aklo is next up in line to win a major which 100% will happen in 2025 but most IN FORM player? not a chance Zain is the most in form player atm it's not even close despite losing to link hell finish this year no 1. Hbox has went like a year without winning a major and like 2 years from a set win on Zain he is not reformed in any way just he's just not complete shit anymore. mokeys win isn't fraudulent but it's just not as impressive as winning a super major should be on paper
@@GangdalfIt is hilarious how you're saying that winning a tournament with most of the best players in the world playing, with the actual #1 seed there, actually #2 too and you're gonna tell me that isn't an impressive major win? You're full of actual crap.
@debeb5148 does it matter that the number 1 player is there when you don't fight them? and cody is not in the best shape not he's not terrible of course but hes not in peak form. it's not not impressive it's just a micky mouse run
@@Gangdalf It does because Aklo handled Zain and was up to the task. I think you forget how the next best WILL rise when the best are caught lacking. Aklo and Moky became the demons that tournament and stepped up to the fucking challenge. That's not mickey mouse shit, that's just natural. Mango probably would have gotten wrecked by THIS Moky. So screw off.
GGs Moky - well deserved win but Nicki arguably had a more impressive run. One of the most hype tournaments in a while.
@@notgavincrenshaw Nicki had such an insane run!
i wanted Nicki to get to grands so bad
Mango has always been dbag imo, yall just love him cause hes amazing at the game lol. Ive never seen someone love the smell of there own sh*t quite like him.
nice video
Nice video, by the way you said S2J instead of SDJ when referencing the two Puffs.
@Pipperchu thanks for letting me know, one of many times this happened and will continue to happen looool they are so similar sounding
You make this tournament's story sound like dark souls lore
facts!!!
He beat hbox and aklo in top 8 chill out he did nothing
@@Kai-lp5ej top 10 win after top 10 win, including a win on the #2 seed as well, all from winners and all dominant showings with only one game 5 -- I don't think you really enjoy melee do you
@@StarkDoes I have to admit while I don't agree with "he did nothing", seeing the tournament come down to Nicki, Aklo and Moky, with Aklo and Nicki overcoming Zain while Moky beat players he hasn't been struggling much with and then Moky winning.... It's just always more hype when someone new wins a tournament by overcoming a demon. When others eliminate that demon for you and then you beat them it will never feel as good from a spectator perspective. That said his win was still 100% earned (and arguably overdue).
@dh3913 I can see where you're coming from given that Zain didn't see him in bracket, but what's missing here from your analysis is that in this run, every person moky beat was against someone who beat him in their last showing. I wouldn't consider that "players moky hasn't been struggling much with", and given how Zain played this tournament, it's completely possible moky could have won as he's gone game 5 against him before I totally see where you're coming from, and I'd have loved to see him face Zain, but I don't want to take away from the incredible redemption he showed us here!
@@StarkDoes "every person moky beat was against someone who beat him in their last showing" wait is this true for Aklo...? Besides that though I understand what you mean, Trif, Cody and Hbox definitely are not easy matchups, just matchups he's shown he could do before. To be fair though obviously Moky isn't alone here & the only reason this matters at all is it being his 1st supermajor. Cody has had supermajor wins this year where he dodged Zain / Mango, Zain has exclusively won while dodging Amsa, Mango has had multiple wins in the past where his bracket was all foxes.. everyone of these cases the wins were earned, just always feels a lil worse from the spectator perspective lol.
@dh3913 sounds like a great idea for a video, which supermajor victory would be considered the most triumphant, thanks for sharing your perspective on this!
My first ever tourney was LTC 2024. I heard the G&W on a setup and thought it was so wild to hear those sound bites at a tournament of all places. I’ve always had a G&W problem. This was so cool too watch. Thank you, subbed
