Four Ways to Utilize Motion on Offense
Sorry I've been away for so long! I had thought most who followed football understood the various ways that teams used motion, but I saw a comment on reddit from a user who thought motion was only useful for determining the defensive coverage (and concluded that there's probably others who are at that level of knowledge as well), so that is why I made this video. It's relatively elementary, and not very in depth, but I wanted to do something quick and easy that can be understood by more novice fans.
Four ways to use motion:
1. Determine defensive pass coverage
2. Gain a block numbers advantage in the running game
3. Gain a numbers or mismatch advantage in the passing game
4. To start a play and catching the defense off guard.

The Duo Play
มุมมอง 5K6 ปีที่แล้ว
The Duo play is basically power without a pulling guard. This allows for more gap-sound blocking on the backside, and establishes more double teams at the line of scrimmage. It is also similar to inside zone in that everyone is double teaming when possible, picking off linebackers as they declare their gaps, and the RB has a choice to continue on a hard downhill track through the A or B gap, or...

    Great video! Quick question - how do you pass block with wide splits especially in the middle? Say you want to run an option offense but throw in plays that take time to develop. What do the lineman have to do in that case?

    Just now saw this. If you're going to analyze it, make sure you know what you're talking about. Rostetler is the punter/holder,, not the place kicker. The place kicker (Recinos #91) is the last man on the left, who runs a go route.

    • @formerlyknownaseasrob
      @formerlyknownaseasrob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Simple answer: yes by using read option game with duo and maybe a #2 slant on one side behind it as well Long answer: since you don’t have that blocking back, instead of kicking out the end you should probably read the end, the only other thing I could think of is using it to see if the backers come downhill on the double teams the first couple of times and using one of the first RPOs aka #2 on one side run a simple 3 step slant behind it to the spot the linebacker on that receiver’s side vacated.

    • @formerlyknownaseasrob
      @formerlyknownaseasrob 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ^ I’m also saying this presuming you mean 10 personnel with the receivers in a 2x2 alignment. Out of 3x1, it would be #3 on the trips side running the slant.

      @justinschnurer4859 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As already said in responses, yes you can, but you have no one to kick-out the DE, so it usually has to be a read option of some kind (if you have a six man box). If you get a five man box, I'd have a call to let you get a hat on a hat.

    Coach, a few questions for you: 1) How different is the duo concept for you from a traditional veer concept? 2) Do you prefer duo or power, or do you think they both have merit and value depending on the situation? If it's the latter, what would you say the value is for each of them?

    • @justinschnurer4859
      @justinschnurer4859 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me, duo differs from veer in terms of the speed and development. Veer is supposed to be a fast hitting player, where getting up to the LB's quickly is crucial, and it's all about speed, often because the dive back is coming right away. Duo is more akin to a "reverse inside zone," where you're using more conventional linemen techniques, such as the duck waddle, where you're often shuffling off the line looking for double teams and to pick up backers as they attack their gaps. With that, the back is also coming slower, because they're reading whether to attack the A or B gap (or C gap if there's a TE). I don't have a preference of duo over power or vice versa. It really comes down to what I want to do as a team, and if I have competent pullers. Power is more viable in the long run IMO, but duo is a good base/start. I understand the difference is that duo is power...but the backside guard and playside tackle exchange assignments (BSLB and PSLB).

    Here is my difficulty: Run right (18 wide zone) NT in a 1 tech, playside A. DT in a 2 tech over the backsode guard. MLB in the backside A gap uncovered and wants to blitz. The counting rule has the center mark the NT as 0, and the BSG tags the MLB as a 1. unless we have a great BST who can bucket + Rip and Run the DT, how are we going to prevent penetration? Double the DT with the BSG? He has to bucket and cut off the MLB or at least get lateral movement and climb. Meanwhile, that gives up a lot of penetration to the DT. If we double the DT, then the Mike is set lose to flow or eve shot the back sode A gap and get a tackle for a loss. If we count the backsode A gap MLB, then we go against the zero count rules, and can't account for playsode threats. This is what defensive teams do to us. The get pressure up that back sode A gap instatly, and I am coaching amatures while playing right guard. When we flip or call 19 (wide zone left), there is no problem, but sometimes we want to get that 18 strong run working.

      If a DT can run your back down in a stretch play away, through traffic, you might need a different back. I’d either go with toss to how wide, or pin and pull (downblock from PSG and C on Nose and MIKE, and pull BSG, and cut the BSDT; have your BST go foot-to-foot with your BSG if necessary)

    • @tylerstevens6134

      I know this is years later but just in case anyone is still curious…if you have a backside 2 tech and a LBer in backside A that is blitzing then that answers your question. The 2 Tech has to either pinch A or slant to B Gap to be sound. So if your expecting the backer to blitz backside A your guard will pick him up and the tackle can cut the 2 that will slant away. Or if the 2 Tech pinches A then the backer will have to shoot backside B to be sound and your tackle will pick him up. Hope this makes sense.

    • @sprintoption7146
      @sprintoption7146 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      His response is inaccurate. It's not over preference to call something 200 vs 2 when it comes to Jet protection in the West Coast System - there is a substantive difference. Understand that WCO passing is rooted in rhythm (qb drops correlating with WR route depth/ultimately aggressiveness of blocking). So when you add "00" to the end of 2 Jet, you've created a 3 digit system - the 3 denotes a 3 step drop/quick-game minded blocking. You see the same thing in other standard protections such as "22" or "71" - when you tag a "3" before them (322, 371), the entire play from a timing perspective. So while a "200 Jet Y Stick U Over" and "2 Jet Y Stick U Over" sound roughly the same, you'd end up in a nightmare scenario if the QB took the wrong drop during each respective concept.

    • @nicholaspfarner1882
      @nicholaspfarner1882 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sprint Option im not sure if thats correct for the jet protection. I know you can add a three to certain protections such as the 20 series and what not to make it a 3 step drop but every playbook ive read doesnt correlate with what you said about jet protection. And the other guy said the same thing in the comment section and the other guy gave his reasoning for it being false which seems pretty true

    • @sprintoption7146
      @sprintoption7146 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicholas Pfarner www.playbookexchange.net/playbooks/Offense/01130301-WestCoast.pdf Check page 16 for an explanation. Alternatively, download one of Gruden's, Holmgren's, Walsh's, or Shanahan's playbooks, they all will denote the difference in protections. The distinction between the 2 is clear and important! Moreover you'll see both 2 Jet and 200 Jet in the same playbook - which isnt trivial, because making random distinctions for no reason would be confusing. Normally 2 Jet is used for longer plays (2 Jet Dino Y Shallow Cross), while 200 is almost always used for slant/stick concepts (200 Jet X Slant, 200 Jet Y Stick Lion). But you will never see a 200 Jet Dino or 200 Jet All-Go Special; the protection would be suicide.

    can you explain how to define an overload more in depth

    • @justinschnurer4859
      @justinschnurer4859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eli Halaby I typically explain an overload as any time when a team has a numbers advantage on one side of the field (for both offense or defense). Some times on paper/board it may not present as a true overload, but game planning and film may find that it's still a threat for an overload. In the video, it's split with three defenders on each side. However the offense's right side is under more of a threat for an overload, hence why I called that the overload side.

    • @justinschnurer4859
      @justinschnurer4859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      An overload is simply where one team has a number's advantage or shows signs of pressure. In this case, an overload is when the defense has outnumbered the offense in an area of a field, or has matched the offense up with numbers, and all the matched up defenders are showing signs they are going to rush/blitz

    Am I right in thinking that 200 jet indicates a three step drop, while 2 jet is a 5/7?

    • @justinschnurer4859
      @justinschnurer4859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Louis Mayall Not really. This protection was almost exclusively for 5-7 step drops (and was the most preferred for 7-step). Plus the play Rogers checked too would not be in the 3-step category.

    • @jrw_12
      @jrw_12 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the West Coast offense any protection with three digits is a three step drop, so yes 200 jet is a 3 step drop
