Advent Calendar 24: Jean Langlais - La Nativité from 'Poèmes Évangéliques'
Langlais (1907-91) was born in La Fontenelle, Brittany. Due to glaucoma, he became blind at the age of two. However, this did not prevent him from pursuing his exceptional musical talent and he was sent to the National Institute for Blind Children in Paris, where he began to study organ. He then moved on to the Paris Conservatiore, where he studied with Paul Dukas, Marcel Dupré and Charles Tournemire.
In 1945, he became titular organist at Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, serving there until 1988. He was also in demand as a concert organist and gave many tours across Europe and the United States.
Langlais composed music prolifically, spanning virtually the length of his life. His last piece was composed in 1990. His musical language is difficult to categorise, but has been described as individual and eclectic.
The piece recorded here, 'La Nativité' is the second work from 'Poèmes Évangéliques', published in 1933. The gently unfolding, programmatic music depicts those in attendance at the manger scene. Beginning with the crib, the music is calm and serene in mood, with a pentatonic theme announced in the pedals. Next heralds the arrival of the angels, as awe and wonder of the Christ child’s birth sets in. At this point, Langlais marks the score 'plus animé' to characterise the activity of the angels gently circling protectively around the Christ child. The shepherds follow, with the oboe stop sounding out their theme like a distant shepherds' air, and finally, the holy family are gathered, reverently caring for the newborn infant.

Advent Calendar 23: Flor Peeters - O Jesu soet op.39 no.7
มุมมอง 5714 วันที่ผ่านมา
'O Jesu soet' (O Jesus sweet) is also from Peeters' set of 10 Chorales, with numbers 2 and 4 having already featured as part of the Advent cycle. In contrast to the Bach-influenced style of the previous pieces, this is Peeters writing in his more modern, 20th century style. The chorale, heard in the top register, is supported by constantly shifting quaver chords in the left hand. Peeters' harmo...

มุมมอง 6021 วันที่ผ่านมา
Composed around 1713, 'Puer Natus in Bethlehem' is the fifth chorale prelude in Bach's odyssey of 46 pieces, known as 'Das Orgelbüchlein' (Little Organ Book). The chorale is placed in the soprano register, with the pedal moving freely to support the tune, whilst the inner voices contain quaver-based arpeggio motifs and oscillating figures throughout. For this recording, I have opted for a plenu...

The peerless music of J.S. Advent Calendar 17: Malcolm Archer (b.1952) - Prelude on 'Noël Nouvelet'
มุมมอง 5721 วันที่ผ่านมา
Malcolm Archer's scherzo-like piece, based on the well-known traditional French carol 'Noël Nouvelet' uses chromaticism, shifting time signatures and clever use of canon in the closing pages to create a novel take on the tune. This piece was originally published in 1996 as part of a collection of Christmas Preludes for Organ by Kevin Mayhew. Sample set: Hereford Cathedral from Lavender Audio (v...

It primarily features the 8' foundations of the Swell and the Great, which are contrasted and combined, building to a climax before concluding with the gentle murmuring of the Swell strings. This beautiful work (To Us Is Born a Little Child) is the fourth piece in Peeters' op.39 set of ten Chorale Preludes. Possibly the most Bachian in character of all of them, the piece uses a walking bass continuo-style figure in the pedal to underpin semiquavers in the right hand before the entry of the chorale, played throughout by the left hand. A really beautiful interpretation and performance, Paul: bravo! (I first heard this gorgeous work by Flor Peeters in a recording by Ronald Perrin on Ripon Cathedral Organ from 1972 . . . and yours is the second I have heard - and better - recording 52 years later!)
Thank you so much, Graham! I’m honoured to be in the esteemed musical firmament of Ronald Perrin!
Puer natus in Bethlehem sounds powerful and festive at the same time.
It’s certainly a robust chorale!
Beautiful Peeters piece!
Thanks, Rien. Yes, it’s a very lovely work, this one!
All the pieces in this collection of Christmas pieces for manuals only published by Tim Knight Music is a great addition to the contemporary organ repertoire. "Bethlehem" by ROberto Fresia is particularly nice with its contrasting ABA form.

A nice piece. I recorded it last year. Not only beautiful in Christmas tide but year round!
Yes, that’s very true - it would make an effective postlude or prelude at a service.
Paul, thank you for doing this series again. It’s been a real treat. I’ve been out of the country for the last week or so and haven’t had the facility to comment much in real time, but I have very much enjoyed each day’s special surprise🎁🍬🌟
Thanks so much for your continued support, Brooks! I’m so pleased you’ve enjoyed the collection of pieces. Have a happy and peaceful Christmas! 🎄
This masterpiece by Bach is such a powerful acclamation of Christ's birth and your plenum-style performance on the magnificent Święta Lipka sample set is both glorious and majestic: bravo, Paul!
Thanks, Graham!
Nice. I recorded the equivalent from Buxtehude for next week. That one is a lot easier than this one. Well done!
Thanks, Rien!
A nice piece, which has a medieval/renaissance feel. Well done, Paul!
@@RalphLooij Thanks so much, Ralph!
Thanks for reminding me of Adam’s beautiful piece.
Thank you for listening!
W O W ! Christmas arrived early with this sparkling performance of a fabulous setting of the quintessential English carol! The chimes at the end jingle like no bells have jingled before! B R A V O, Paul!
Thanks, Graham! The possibilities for registration are huge on this set, but I like the festive twinkle of these mutation stops!
Lovely piece and bravo for the registration, chéri! I enjoyed it and - yes! - the chimes at the end sound festive and cheerful!❤️🎹🌟
Thank you for your wonderful support, chérie. Yes, it’s such a festive piece! ❤️❤️
A nice short piece!
Yes! Thanks for listening, Rien.
As the composer remarked, minor keys when treated with such wonderful imagination can be quite captivating and certainly pack a punch - as in this splendid recording of Anthony's jaunty composition! Bravo, Paul - your performance really sparkles and once again, Friesach sounds magnificent!
Thanks so much for listening, Graham!
Wonderful Paul ! Congratulations !
Many thanks, Rémi!
Beautiful, chéri! ❤🎹 P.s. You don’t have 2K, but it doesn’t matter, because you are the best! ❤️😇🎼
@Miriam-b8p Thank you for your inspirational words, chérie! ❤️❤️
A stunning performance, Paul. Such sublime bliss from the Master . . . though not at all easy to play, even if you do make it look straightforward! Beautiful registration on the Friesach sample set along with your fluid articulation makes for a perfect Advent treat: B R AV O !
Thanks so much, Graham!
Lovely! Full of energy 👏🏻
Thanks, Cornelia!

Fantastic Paul!
Thanks, Rien!
WOW! This is a real firework of a piece by Malcolm Archer with quite an explosive ending! (The Hereford Father Willis Tuba is just magnificent!) A virtuoso performance, Paul, of an amazing setting. Just thrilling from the first to the last notes: B R A V O !
Thanks, Graham!
Wonderful piece, bravo Paul!
Thanks, Rémi!
A beautiful performance Paul!
Thanks, Rien!
Adam has written a charming setting of 'Cranham' and this is a gorgeous performance by you, Paul, on the magnificent Father Willis Organ sample set at Hereford Cathedral: bravo! (Fabulous crescendo . . . and that rumbling 32' at the end - heaven!)
Thanks, Graham!
Wonderful Paul ! Bravo !
Thanks very much, Rémi!
Really a fantastic piece, thanks for another unknown Advent/Christmas gem!
Thanks so much, Ralph!
Great artistry from you Paul. This piece requires much more than skills to play. A lot of thinks are going on. Manual changes, tempi changes, stop changes. Beautiful!
Thank you so much, Rien! This is a charming and quirky piece by Gordon Phillips so I thought it was good to make it part of the Advent series.
That’s really beautiful, Paul! I like those dissonances that make a magical feeling! Your adventcalendar is such a great idea 👏🏻
Thanks so much, Cornelia! Perhaps a pianothings advent calendar next year..? 😉
The harmonic language in this music is amazing! A beautifully crafted composition from Gordon Phillips and performed exquisitely by you on the magnificent St Mary-le-Bow Tickell Organ sample set: bravo, Paul!
Thank you, Graham! Gordon Phillips’ harmonic language is definitely his own, but this piece has real charm and character and the intimate sound of SMB seemed to fit the bill quite well to match the music’s mood.
Bairstow's setting of 'Veni Emmanuel' works very well of the Friesach Organ sample set with your imaginative registration choices and your brilliant performance which is overflowing with artistry: bravo, Paul! (The acoustics of this sample set ensure great clarity; you probably saw Voxus Organs announce that they will be sampling the York Minster instrument, so in the future, we may have the opportunity to hear you play this piece again and in a a massive acoustic that may not provide the same immediacy as this recording . . . but may sound as Bairstow might have heard it!)
Thanks, Graham! Yes, I was very excited to hear about Voxus Organs releasing York in 2026 and once available, I will definitely be acquiring it.
Very beautiful Paul ! Bravo !
Thanks so much for listening, Rémi!
This is a very fine example of English music for Advent!
Thanks, Vidas. Yes, this music is well suited to the Advent season.
This feels holy and humble ✨
Definitely! Thanks for listening, Cornelia.
